Hi Taufik,
Do you know if there will be a high school fall league this year? If so, please send me any information you may have.
There's also a new forum for local ultimate players that you can post to: www.ultimateslc.org
Hey everyone,
Two things:
First, Pete will not be able to make league this Saturday so if a
few of us can make sure we're there to help get kids get
organized and playing, that would be great. Just show up ready
to work with others and help split kids up into teams and help
coach some players.
Second: When we had our coaches meeting, we all discussed
coming up with some sort of event for the high schoolers once
Spring league ends. Any thoughts on this? Maybe a one-day hat
tournament or half-day hat tourney and half-day skills clinic? Just
curious what ideas are floating around out there.
All the best,
Chris
Hey ya'll,
I've created a coaches-only list at
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/utah_HS_ultimate_coaches/.
Please also join that one. Membership will require moderator
approval, so if I won't be able to tell who you are by your email
address, be sure to include your name.
Pete
Good news, y'all. Skyline's bid to Westerns was
accepted.
Obviously there are more hurdles to cross, but things
are looking good.
A current list of teams is at

Thanks to those of you who showed up and played in the rain/snow and
cold! Hopefully, next week we can get some real games going. Let
your friends know to get signed up on this yahoo.group.
Thanks again,
Tara
I think everyone should have received a notice that I uploaded a
flyer for spring league. I apologize for not being able to get it out
sooner. The file is sized to print two flyers per page. You should
be able to simply hit "print."
Hopeful this helps. Good luck getting kids to league!
What's the lastest with Skyline? Any luck with the Westerns
application?

Bad news:
Taufik says he cannot lower the price (or cut a deal
where students register but don't get shirts).
Good news:
The fields are available before league on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Softball will be
starting up in May, but Taufik didn't think they would
use those fields on Saturdays.

I unfortunately will not be able to generate flyers for each school by
the end of day. There's been too many details the last couple days
trying to get the college team to a tourney this weekend.
I will be able to complete and email the flyers out Monday night
though, which would give everyone Tuesday-Friday to get them posted at
our respective schools.
I apologize for not being able to get this done sooner.
Chris
Hey everyone,
I wanted to get this out asap so I've haven't sent invites yet to
the rest of those who were at the meeting last night. I'll do that
right after this email.
James, Pete and anyone involved with the Skyline team:
ALL you have to do is fill out the application found on the
following link and fax it to the UPA before 5 p.m. tomorrow, then
send a hard copy of the application to the UPA anytime next week.
THAT'S IT! No state championship or anything else. This is a one-
time opportunity since we'll have to host a state championship from
here on out to have a team qualify for Westerns.
Here's the info:
http://www4.upa.org/juniors/chamiponships/2006_hs_westerns
Skyline: Fill it out, fax it in and you have a "good" chance of
being invited.
Good luck!
Hey everyone,
I know we don't have a ton of momentum organizing the HS scene but
it's good for us to remember that at every level disc is a pretty
grassroots effort in SLC.
With that said, yet another reminder to please register as soon as
possible for the UPA Coaching Clinic. We need at least another 6
people by FEBRUARY 12, 2006 to make it happen. Otherwise, it will be
cancelled.
Coaching Corp info:
http://www3.upa.org/coaches/clinics
The clinc is Saturday, February 25, and it'd be great for us to
attend the clinic then work on choosing who wants to coach which
high school. At that point, we can enter players as a high school
team in the SLC Park & Rec. Spring League which was about April 2,
2005 until May 21 last year. That gives us all the month of March to
begin organizing kids at different schools.
Any questions or thoughts with this approach, by all means, post
away.
All the best,
Chris
I'm working with the UPA Youth Director to host a UPA Coaching Corp
clinic which will probably be Saturday, February 4, 2006.
We need at least 10 people to register to make it viable for SLC.
All the info is here:
http://www1.upa.org/coaches
The GAIA UPA Coaching Corps is a process of educating coaches and
volunteers, professionalizing and growing the vocation of coaching,
and creating a pool of qualified volunteers to help grow Ultimate.
The program consists of full day clinics for coaches in which they
learn skills and techniques to: introduce Ultimate and its skills to
new players; teach and maintain Spirit of the Game; interact with
and utilize parents; improve the fitness of their team; maintain
high professional coaching standards; and behave both ethically and
legally while coaching.
Who's eligible:
UPA Certified Coaches must be at least 21 years old and UPA
Certified Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. If you are below
the age limit, you may attend the clinics but will not receive
certification (e.g. for college and high school captains).
Please let me know if you're interested or have any questions.
Having recently started coaching a highs chool team, I'm really
excited about the clinic. It should be really beneficial to anyone
who wants to get into coaching at the youth or college level.
Just another step toward building ultimate in SLC.
All the best,
Chris

To all local ultimate players,
This Saturday, Oct. 22, there will be an ultimate clinic for high
school players as well as a demonstration by SLC club players.
The demonstration will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Copperview
Community Center, which is at 8446 S. Harrison St. (300 West).
From 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. there will be a clinic covering basic
fundamentals of ultimate with league games beginning at 2 p.m. The
clinic is *free* and you do not have to be registered for the league
though you may sign up if you like. Registration for league is $15.
In addition to player development, another goal of this clinic is to
introduce high school players to adults interested in becoming a
high school coach.
As a high school coach, you would be responsible for helping
students organize a team and regular practices. Whether you practice
one a week, twice a week, or 1-hour before pickup or league games,
any time you volunteer will be a huge help with this grassroots
effort to build high school ultimate in the state.
Some short-term goals are to have coaches work with their respective
schools and encourage players to sign up for league in the spring.
At that point, we could possibly coach players as a team during
league games.
Finally, if we are able to develop some high school teams then we
can host a State Championship in the spring, where the winner would
get a bid to compete at the High School Western Championship to be
held in Boulder, Colo. next May.
Please help spread the word to any potential high school players and
coaches.
There is also a new yahoo group that you may sign up to if you're
interested in getting involved:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/utah_HS_ultimate/
Please contact me with any questions or ideas that you have to help
build the HS scene.
Thanks everyone!

Hey, just tossing this out there as an idea. I have no details on
anything yet, because I don't if the community would be willing to let
us host it. But, if you so desire, Skyline is available and willing to
host the 2005-2006 highschool state tournament.
Only details we have so far is that it would most likely parallel the
highschool series, and would be in the month of april. One month
before nationals. Or we could have it in the fall and parallel the
club series, allowing less of a yearly gap between state winners, and
national qualifiers.
Just wanted to toss this out there, change the date, or anything you
wish. All I hope to accomplish at this moment is if there is enough of
a desire to host a tournament in Utah. I know that Skyline is itching
to host one, so that Utah can get a nationals bid.
Hoping,
James Judd

Hello, and thanks for the email.
I, a student at skyline high about 3 weeks ago, started the Skyline
Ultimate club at Skyline Highschool. We have currently 16 members, and
expect to reach 20-30 this friday, when we have our first official
club meeting at Skyline High. We have had about 7 practices or so, and
are doing pretty well for a begining team.
If you are looking for a place to play, we currently are enlisted in
the Utah Highschool Ultimate Frisbee league, which, if you wish, you
can sign up for at http://www.utah-ultimate.org/. We have played 2
games so far, against a team from West Jordan, and are looking for
more teams to join the league. (Having only two teams in the entire
league can get dry at times.)
In regards to using a yahoogroup, I think while this is a good idea,
we should rather talk to the webmasters of utah-ultimate and see if
they would be willing to start a forum; which would effectively be
more accessible, and less confusing. If they do not grant us the
priveledge to have a forum on their webspace, I currently have a very
recently retired server sitting in my basement collecting dust. If we
wanted to, we could host the forum off of the Skyline Ultimate website
(launching on the 14th of October. Doing so would allow us to have a
much more organized, and controlled Utah Ultimate area, in which we
could all inform each other of the happenings in utah.
Continuing on, I would be willing to scrimmage any team at any time
during the week, excluding sundays, which are generally a bad day for
Utahns, my team included. Our current games are on Saturdays from
2:00-4:00 P.M. I would also like to know how to contact the other Utah
Coaches, and if any of you have any way of contacting them, or know of
any other highschool teams, I would be very grateful.
If you wouldn't mind, knowing who you are, and which schools you
represent would be very helpful; so I can put a name with an email.
I'm the coach at Skyline Highschool, my name is James Judd, and you
may contact me at my email address james@... you want my
phone numbers, please contact me.
I hope to get to know you better in the coming months, and hopefully
we can help Utah Utlimate grow to it's full potential. (Including
hosting a state tournament)
Salutations,
James Judd
