Both MLS teams in action advanced, and the Wilmington Hammerheads are
now the last team from the United Soccer League's Pro Select League
still alive as the third round of the 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
got underway tonight across the country.
The biggest upset of the night was at the Legion Sports Complex in
Wilmington, N.C., as the Hammerheads defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks
2-1. After a scoreless first half, the visitors took the lead in the
58th minute as Mac Cozier found the back of the net on an assist from
Joard Odera. Wilmington would answer less than 10 minutes later, as
second-half sub Byron Carmichael tallied in the 66th minute. The game-
winner came in the 75th minute, as Kevin Nylen scored on an assist
from Junior Zarate. The Hammerheads will next host the Dallas Burn
(MLS) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 6. The team also clinched $10,000 in
prize money as the team from Division III to advance the deepest into
the tournament.
The Mid Michigan Bucks, a USASA affiliated team that qualifies out of
the USL's Premier Development League, nearly escaped with a result
against the MetroStars of MLS in front of a crowd of 4,010 fans at
Hurley Field in Berkley, Mich. The MetroStars opened the scoring in
the fifth minute on a free kick by Amado Guevera. The Bucks held the
MLS side's advantage down to just one until the flood gates opened
after the 80 minute mark, with John Wolyniec, Mike Nugent and Jose
Galvan padded the MetroStars lead in the final 10 minutes. Jonny
Walker, who joined the MetroStars to fill the vacancy left by Tim
Howard, made four saves in his first appearance with the team. The
MetroStars will next travel to face the Columbus Crew (MLS) in a
rematch of a 2002 Open Cup quarterfinal in Columbus Crew Stadium at
7:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 6.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (A-League), under recently-named head
coach Ricardo Iribarren, were the other team to take a crack at an
MLS side, falling 2-1 at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md. Mike
Petke scored on a corner kick in the 33rd minute, and Dema Kovalenko
added the eventual game-winner in the 44th minute. Eliseo Quintanilla
assisted on both goals. With D.C. up 2-0 at halftime, Pittsburgh
attempted a comeback, but could only get one goal that came in the
74th minute by Thiago Martins.
D.C. United will advance to host the Virginia Beach Mariners (A-
League), who topped the Carolina Dynamo (USL-PSL) 5-0 at the Virginia
Beach Sportsplex. In a match that was delayed nearly an hour by
thunderstorms, the home side came out and made quick work of the
visitors. Dante Washington and Roland Aguilera - who both have scored
goals in the Open Cup for the Columbus Crew - led the way for the
Mariners with a pair of goals each.
The Rochester Raging Rhinos - one of only two teams to participate in
the last eight Open Cups - topped the New Hampshire Phantoms (USL-
PSL) before more than 7,500 fans at Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y.
Their 13th Open Cup win ties them with the Columbus Crew for the most
since MLS teams joined the tournament in 1996. Bjorn Hansen opened
the scoring for the Phantoms in the 10th minute, but Rochester
responded with four unanswered goals, including a game-winner by
Stoin Midenov in the 67th minute. The Rhinos advance to face the New
England Revolution at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, Mass., on Aug. 6 at
7:30 p.m. ET.
In an A-League match-up, the Seattle Sounders stole a win on the road
at the National Sports Complex in Blaine, Minn., as they topped the
Minnesota Thunder 1-0. The only goal of the match came 50th minute by
Kyle Smith on an assist from Jason Farrell. The Seattle win sets up
an Open Cup showdown with the San Jose Earthquakes for the second-
straight year. That fourth round game will be played Aug. 5 in
Seattle.
Fresno earns 4th round date with MLS Champs -
The PDL's Fresno Fuego continued a added to a growing list of US Open
Cup upsets when they defeated the A-League's El Paso Patriots 5-2 on
Tuesday. The Fuego trailed 2-1 at halftime, but came back with four
unanswered goals at Dudley Field in El Paso, TX.
Fuego head coach Jamie Ramirez was interviewed on the Soccer Fanatics
Radio Show.
The Milwaukee Wave United of the A-League defeated the amateur
Milwaukee Bavarians of the United States Adult Soccer Association 4-1
on Tuesday night in the last third round Open Cup game. The Wave
United will play the Chicago Fire of MLS in the fourth round of the
Open Cup at the Uihlein Soccer Complex in Milwaukee on August 6.

Big game brewing in Milwaukee
From the USA Today
For the next seven days, the epicenter of U.S. soccer activity isn't
the new Home Depot Center outside L.A. It's not Columbus, home of the
other soccer-specific cathedral to house an MLS team. It's not
Washington, New York or Chicago.
It's Milwaukee, which is giving U.S. fans a rare opportunity to see a
true "derby" match — a meaningful game between two local teams.
The Milwaukee Bavarians, an amateur team in the USASA, have earned
their way to this meeting, working through several layers of
qualification before upsetting PDL powerhouse Des Moines and the Pro
Select League's Reading Rage in the U.S. Open Cup. Next up: the A-
League's Wave United.
"This game has drawn a lot of local interest in town," said Wave
United coach Art Kramer. "There's a certain buzz around the area
about this one."
The matchup is an oddity, but it's no fluke. Milwaukee has a thriving
soccer community. The Bavarians have three things most U.S. pro clubs
would envy — reserve squads, insightful coverage from the local
newspaper and a lighted, full-size field with seating for roughly
3,000. The Wave United have A-League and MISL (indoor) squads under
the same umbrella, and they call Uihlein Soccer Park home.
With an enthusiastic town and good facilities, players tend to hang
around. And that creates some interesting subplots for the city's big
game.
Start with the brother-vs.-brother matchup, with Scott Dombrowski on
the field for the Bavarians and younger brother Chad playing for the
Wave United. But that's just the beginning. The Bavarians are only a
couple of players away from being able to field a lineup of players
who played for the indoor Wave or the outdoor Rampage, the Wave
United's predecessor. Joe Hammes, a defender for the Wave United,
started for the Bavarians in 2001.
"They know us as players, so I don't think they're going to take us
lightly at all," said Bavarians player Steve Provan.
The Bavarians may be amateur, but they're no strangers to big-time
soccer. Dan Stebbins, who scored the goal that eliminated Reading,
played 26 MLS games with Dallas, Miami and Chicago, scoring six
goals. Chris Jahr also saw time with the nearby Fire. Provan played
seven years of professional soccer and was once a Rampage teammate of
future World Cup stars Brian McBride and Tony Sanneh.
In fact, the Open Cup isn't the only prize the Bavarians will be
chasing in the next few days. This weekend, they'll play as many as
four games in the final four of two tournaments — the U.S. Amateur
Cup and the U.S. Open Cup's amateur division. The Open Cup derby is
drawing the attention, but Bavarians coach Tom Zaiss is in no way
looking past those games at nearby Uihlein.
"I'm hoping for 8-9 overtimes each game this weekend," Kramer joked.
The weekend games give the Bavarians two chances to add to a trophy
case that already includes the last two U.S. Amateur Cups. They
advanced to the 1994 U.S. Open Cup final before being knocked out by
the San Francisco Greek-Americans, a team that included future MLS
players Mark Semioli and John Doyle. The coach was one-time national
team coach Lothar Osiander.
The Bavarians, who trace their history back to 1929, can also claim a
U.S. national coach among their alumni — Bob Gansler, who coached the
U.S. in the 1990 World Cup and led the Kansas City Wizards to the
2000 MLS title.
"You can attribute the success of Milwaukee soccer to the coaching
over the past 15-20 years," Kramer said. Players come up through the
local clubs, gain experience at various levels, then stick around to
coach.
Yet there are a few drawbacks to being an amateur side at this level
of competition. The Bavarians train twice a week, far less than the
full-time pros they'll be facing Wednesday. For the first-round match
against Des Moines, Stebbins was among several missing starters. The
players weren't hurt, nor were they suspended. They had to work.
Against Reading, the Bavarians had a home game under the lights in
Milwaukee. Their guys didn't have to miss work. Perhaps the amateur
side's win was no upset.
In addition to local bragging rights, the Bavarians and Wave United
will be playing for the right to play the MLS' Chicago Fire in the
next round, quite possibly at home in Milwaukee.
"Some say it's a no-win situation for us," Kramer said. "But it's
a 'win-win.' If we win, we play the Chicago Fire. And it's an
opportunity for us to play against tremendous former professionals."
The Bavarians met the Wave United in a preseason scrimmage, with the
pro club taking a comfortable win. But both coaches discounted that
meeting. The weather had been playing tricks on the players, and the
atmosphere wasn't quite the same as they'll face Wednesday.
"They actually have the more experienced team," Kramer said. "You
wouldn't think that would be the case. Our oldest guy is 30. They
have 6-7 guys in their mid-30s."
"(The Wave United) haven't been together that long as a group," Zaiss
said. "They've only played 14 games together. Some of our guys have
probably played 1,400 games together. They'll be fitter."
That's the key question: Can the Bavarians' experience overcome a
team that is playing high-level soccer every day?
"We know we can play at a high level," Provan said. "We've played
professionally, and it's nice to play at this level again. It should
be a really good game."
Kramer knows he'll be facing a dangerous team with the extra
motivation of a "final hurrah." Many of them had great moments with
the Wave or at Uihlein, and they'll be playing before a crowd that
could exceed 6,000.
"I'd be very surprised if they didn't come out and play the game of
their lives."

Sunday, June 6th:
The U.S. Men's National Team returned to action today against
Paraguay, posting a 2-0 victory in the final match for the U.S.
before attempting to defend its title in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup,
beginning next Saturday. Team USA is now ranked NUMBER NINE in the
latest FIFA World Rankings (June 2003). USA has performed up to
expectations in 2003, losing only to three teams ranked above them by
FIFA (Brazil, Argentina, and Turkey).
Here's a Short Summary On Today's Match in Columbus, OH (at the MLS
Columbus Crew Stadium, also a venue for the 2003 World Cup...)
The U.S. struck first, as Landon Donovan converted a cross from
DaMarcus Beasley in the 12th minute. Beasley got free with a fine
effort in the left side of the penalty area, leaving three frustrated
Paraguayan defenders in his wake. The second U.S. goal came from
Earnie Stewart, just before the final whistle to provide the winning
2-0 scoreline for the U.S. in front of 14,103 fans at Columbus Crew
Stadium, where the U.S. has never lost. Today's match was broadcast
live on ESPN2, Telemundo, and Radio Unica.

A pair of changes have been made to the third round schedule of the
2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which was released last week.
The match between the Milwaukee Bavarians and Milwaukee Wave United
has been pushed back one week and now will be played Wednesday, July
23, 2003, at the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, Wisc. The match
will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT. The match, one of eight scheduled for
the competition's third round, was originally scheduled to be played
on July 16. The Bavarians qualified for the tournament out of Region
II of the United States Adult Soccer Association and advanced with
wins over the Des Moines Menace and Reading Rage. Wave United enters
the tournament in the third round and is a member of the A-League.
Also, the July 16 match between the Fresno Fuego and El Paso Patriots
at Dudley Field in El Paso, Texas, has been pushed back to July 22.
The game will be played at the same location, but will start a 7 p.m.
CT. The Fuego, a USASA affiliated team that qualifies for the
tournament out of the USL's PDL have advanced with wins over the
Chico Rooks and Utah Blitzz. The Patriors enter the competition in
the third round as a qualifier from the A-League.
The hosts for all eight 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third-round
matches were finalized and the fourth-round prospective parings were
announced today by U.S. Soccer. In the third round, eight A-League
teams along with the MetroStars and D.C. United of MLS join the
tournament while the final eight MLS teams will enter in the fourth
round.
All of the third round matches will be played on July 16, and the
fourth round is scheduled for August 6. No host teams have yet been
determined for the fourth round.
Three amateur teams, including two from the United Soccer Leagues'
Premier Development League, have made it through to the third round.
After topping the Utah Blitzz (USL-PSL) 4-0 in the second round, the
Fresno Fuego will travel to face the El Paso Patriots (A-League) at
Dudley Field in El Paso, Texas, at 7 p.m. MT. The winner will face
the Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) in the fourth round. Also from the PDL,
the Mid Michigan Bucks will host an MLS side for the third time since
1999, as the MetroStars travel to Hurley Stadium in Berkley, Mich.,
at 7:30 p.m. ET with the winner advancing to face the Columbus Crew
(MLS).
The other amateur team, the Milwaukee Bavarians of the United States
Adult Soccer Association, will be part of the most intriguing third-
round match up as they face cross-city opponent Milwaukee Wave United
of the A-League in Uihlein Soccer Park at 7 p.m. CT. The winner of
this match will face the Chicago Fire (MLS) in the fourth round.
Also in the third round, two A-League teams – the Seattle Sounders
and host Minnesota Thunder will face off at the National Sports
Center in Blaine, Minn., at 7:30 p.m. CT. The winner of that match
will take on the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) in the fourth round.
Two third-round winners will advance to do battle in the fourth
round. D.C. United (MLS) will host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (A-
League) at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., at 7:30 p.m. ET,
with the victor facing the winner of a match between the Carolina
Dynamo (USL-PSL) and the Virginia Beach Mariners (A-League) at
MacPherson Stadium in Browns Summit, N.C., at 7:30 p.m. ET,
In another match hosted by a USL-PSL team in North Carolina, the
Atlanta Silverbacks will face the Wilmington Hammerheads in
Wilmington's Legion Sports Complex at 7:30 p.m. ET for the right to
face the Dallas Burn (MLS) in the fourth round.
The A-League's Rochester Raging Rhinos will host the final third
round match. Their opponent will be either the Chesapeake Dragons
(PDL) or the New Hampshire Phantoms (USL-PSL). The Dragons and
Phantoms will face off in an extra second-round match on July 10,
made necessary because the Dragon's first-round opponent used an
ineligible player. The team advancing from this group will face the
New England Revolution (MLS) in the fourth round.
Finally, the Colorado Rapids will face the Kansas City Wizards in the
only guaranteed all-MLS fourth-round match.

Wednesday 02 JULY 2003
GENEVA, Switzerland—
In a move that may disappoint those thirsting for the sight of tanned
torsos and bulging biceps, FIFA has ordered soccer players to keep
their shirts on during matches and banned all celebratory post-goal
stripteases.
FIFA boss Sepp Blatter said in an interview Wednesday that the
decision taken by FIFA's executive committee last weekend in Paris
was designed to restore "order and discipline" to the game, saying
that simply too much flesh had been on display at the recent
Confederations Cup.
"There were several awkward situations at the Confederations Cup,"'
he told the Swiss newspaper Blick. "One player needed five minutes to
put his jersey back on because his vest was sewn into it."
Players who ignore the new regulation risk the yellow card for baring
their chest - or bra, as in the case of Brandi Chastain who pulled
off her shirt after scoring the winning goal for the U.S. team in the
Women's World Cup final against China four years ago.
Blatter denied that FIFA was being a killjoy.
"The show and the emotions associated with soccer don't depend on a
player stripping off his shirt, but far more on the quality of the
game," he told the paper.
FIFA first introduced the striptease ban in 1996, but then relaxed
it. Last year, it banned players from displaying slogans or personal
messages on their undergarments, saying this breached its rules.
Details of the new regulation will be distributed shortly to national
soccer associations ahead of the forthcoming season.
Blick launched a campaign against the proposed ban.
"What a shame," Miss Switzerland, Nadine Vinzens told the
paper. "There's nothing wrong with players showing their joy by
ripping off their shirt."
Christian Gimenez, one of the heartthrobs and star scorers of Swiss
Premier League team FC Basel, was unequivocal.
"The goal celebrations are really special for a forward, an
expression of joy and emotion. I'll just have to pull down my shorts
in future."
Blatter also told Blick that FIFA was considering a heat limit on
matches following the death of Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foe, who
collapsed and died during the semifinals of the Confederation Cup.
Lyon, the venue of the match, was in the midst of a heat wave, with
temperatures touching 37 C (95 F).
The cause of the player's death has not been determined.
Blatter will attend Foe's funeral tomorrow in St. Jean Cathedral in
Lyon and his memorial service on July 12 in Cameroon's capital,
Yaounde.
"Blatter expressed the wish to attend the services personally as a
demonstration of his deepest sympathy toward the family and friends
of Foe, toward the entire Cameroon football family, and especially to
the Cameroon national team that has stayed on in Lyon," FIFA said in
a statement.

It was a night for the bottom teams to tighten up the Major League
Soccer table, as D.C. United, the Colorado Rapids and the Los Angeles
Galaxy each doubled their win totals for the 2003 season with
victories on Saturday night.
There were resounding victories in Washington, where United hammered
Columbus Crew 3-0, and Denver, where Rapids rolled over New England
Revolution by a 4-1 scoreline. Los Angeles Galaxy won by 2-1 for
their second consecutive victory, but it came against a Kansas City
Wizards side that had lost just once in 10 matches coming into the
weekend.
The L.A. Galaxy had opened the season without a victory on their
eight-match road trip, but now that they've moved into their new Home
Depot Center, won for the second consecutive week in a pitched battle
with Western Conference-leading Kansas City. Josh Wolff put the
Wizards ahead early in the second half (49), but Cobi Jones equalized
just five minutes later

USA MEN'S SOCCER NATIONAL TEAM
REACHES TOP TEN IN FIFA RANKINGS
FOR FIRST TIME IN HISTORY
In what has already been a landmark year for the United States Men's
National Team, the organization reached another milestone by cracking
the Top 10 of the FIFA World Rankings for the first time in history.
In the latest rankings published today, the USA ranks ninth in the
table, tied with traditional European powerhouse Italy.
"We're honored to have climbed into the top 10 of the FIFA Rankings
for the first time in our history," said U.S. head coach Bruce
Arena. "There's no question that this recognition is representative
of the outstanding effort of our team in 2002, where we were able to
get the results on the field in winning the Gold Cup and advancing to
the final eight at the World Cup. Hopefully this will serve as
another sign of the respect we've been able to bring to U.S. Soccer
and the American players playing both in Europe and Major League
Soccer."
The United States has posted amazing results in 2002, capturing
regional honors as the champions of the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup in
January, then surprising the world with an historic run to the
quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan, the team's
highest finish in 72 years.

A-League team Milwaukee Rampage is the last A-League team to survive.
MLS teams took all the rest.
Also, I heard that Rochestor and Kansas City had a little fight at
the end of their game.
