Battery edge Sounders to reach USOC final
After 1-1 draw, Dusty Hudock makes two saves to win PK shootout
http://USOPENCUP.COM
13-Aug-08 10:24 am

The Charleston Battery earned a place in the U.S. Open Cup final for
the first time in club history after winning a penalty kick shootout
with the Seattle Sounders in the semifinals. The Battery are the
first non-MLS team to advance to the final since the Rochester
Raging Rhinos won the tournament in 1999.

The Sounders struck first with a goal in the 20th minute when a
short corner ended up at the feet of Youseff Kante just outside the
penalty area. He drove a shot toward goal and the ball took a
deflection off of the Battery's Osvaldo Alonso and ended up in the
back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

In the 32nd minute, the Battery were on the attack and sent a ball
into the box from the right wing. A glancing header by Darren Spicer
forced a save by Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander, but he was
unable to hang onto it. Randi Patterson was on the doorstep and
pounced on the loose ball and tied the game at 1-1, ending Seattle's
single-tournament record shutout streak at 453 minutes.

Both teams were unable to break the deadlock through 120 minutes,
despite a few close calls, and the match had to be decided by
penalty kicks. The Battery led 2-1 when Sebastien Le Toux had his
attempt saved by Dusty Hudock. Mike Richardson had a chance to put
the Battery up 3-1, but Chris Eylander came through for Seattle
making the stop to keep it close. After both teams traded goals,
Hudock saved the attempt by Kevin Forrest in the fifth round to send
Charleston to the Open Cup final.

Report Blackbaud Stadium Charleston, S.C.

SEA - Own Goal (Osvaldo Alonso) 20'
CHS - Randi Patterson (Unassisted) 33'

CHS - Tim Velten (GOAL)
SEA - Ciaran O'Brien (GOAL)
CHS - Nelson Akwari (GOAL)
SEA - Kevin Forrest (SAVED)

USOpenCup.com Fun Fact: Dusty Hudock's saves in the penalty kick
shootout, helped eliminate the Seattle Sounders, the team that he
made his Open Cup debut in the first round of the 1995 U.S. Open Cup
(June 14, 1995). He was given the starting job that night in
Seattle's 9-2 win over the Everett BigFoot of the USISL Pro League,
as regular starter Marcus Hahnemann was given the night off.

New League
By J Hutcherson

A competition in need of a reputation starts in earnest later today. As with its
template in Europe, the new CONCACAF Champions League opens with qualifying
rounds before reaching the group stage.

Credit CONCACAF for the bold move, if a few years later than expected.  Dumping
the shifting schedule and short run off games that was the CONCACAF Champions
Cup has made sense for years.  If the organizers are able to keep a standard
calendar and not fall for the Siren call of tweaking the format, they should
have something.
We already know that there are enough quality clubs across CONCACAF to give each
other games worth watching.  In that regard, lucky us.  Better still if CONCACAF
comes down on the meaningless friendly schedule that erodes the impact of facing
the big names of CONCACAF in meaningful games.

Seeing an MLS club facing off against a big time Mexican League opponent should
be just that, big time.  Instead, it's commonplace to the point of irrelevancy.
Any revenge games or scores that need to be settled should be done at the
highest level of competition.  If it takes a few seasons for the clubs involved
to get back together, even better.

It's an important move for Major League Soccer if they have sense enough to
embrace it past whatever dollars they might generate from yet another friendly
or glorified competition.

Soccer fans don't need another made-up cup played out in the United States.  We
need something not only worth winning, but worth defending.  That should be our
own Champions League.  It starts in a few hours.

An American Staying In America
By J Hutcherson

Billy Gonsalves might have been the greatest player to ever step on a field.
His contemporaries certainly thought so.  As a player, he was attached to some
of the biggest names in the early history of American soccer: Fall River,
Brooklyn, Newark.  He spent his later life in the North Jersey area that would
produce so many standout American players.

He was also one of the first American club stars to hear the call of bigger
leagues and crowds, opting to stay with the American game on his terms.  Two
World Cup appearances in '30 and '34 made him known well past the soccer
communities of the United States.  His play in exhibitions against foreign clubs
led prominent soccer people to talk about him as the most talented player they'd
ever seen.

Gonsalves wasn't a standout goals per game striker.  His style of soccer was
more creative than the tactics of his day.  He also had what many who saw him
consider the best shot from either foot of any professional soccer player.

That Gonsalves himself lived until 1977, and many of those same people could and
did make the comparison throughout the North American Soccer League era.  At
least to those witnesses, Billy Gonsalves never faced serious competition for
best in the history of the game.

We have to take them at their word.  The soccer world Billy Gonsalves occupied
was all but lost past those that were actually there.  National Soccer Hall of
Fame historian emeritus Colin Jose did the research that revived the American
Soccer League in its two iterations, putting it in the context of a major
attempt at creating a lasting professional league in the United States in the
1920's and 30's.

Gonsalves' National Team record looks slight by modern standards: six
appearances and one goal.  Yet his was an era where from 1930 to the end of
World War II the United States only played nine games.  Gonsalves' caps were all
World Cup appearances or games scheduled right after the Cup.  In other words,
when it counted the most he was there.

For the contemporary American player, Gonsalves remains an object lesson.
Gonsalves started young, taking advantage of a new professional structure when
he joined the American Soccer League.  He was a crucial member of the National
Team and part of the first World Cup squad that reached the semifinals.  He
floated offers from foreign clubs that, if not necessarily offering better pay,
certainly offered a bigger stage.

A Billy Gonsalves that became a star in Brazil or Britain isn't as easily
forgotten.  Instead, he stayed in the United States eventually becoming a
coach.  His induction into what would become the National Soccer Hall of Fame
happened in its first year, 1950.  The revival of his era and reputation for the
broader soccer community is an ongoing process pushed by the National Soccer
Hall of Fame and the work of historians like Jose, his successor Roger Allaway,
and David Litterer.

Where the Gonsalves comparison starts to shift is with his championships.  In an
era where the US Open Cup was taken very seriously, Gonsalves and his clubs
dominated that competition.  He was part of four American Soccer League
championship clubs and lifted the Dewar Trophy as the winner of the US Open Cup
eight times.

Any real comparison between the current brand of American professional soccer
and its predecessor needs to happen in the one competition they share. In our
era, where a club can choose to opt out of the Open Cup or simply field their
reserves late in the competition, the Cup remains the only oportunity to make a
case for history.

The Open Cup counts for something past potential entry into a new tournament or
a feel good story for a club that didn't quite do enough to win the league.  It
counts for heritage.  The one Billy Gonsalves helped create in the 1930's when
he was the best in the American or any game.

DC United hosts the Charleston Battery on Wednesday, September 3rd, at RFK
Stadium in the 2008 US Open Cup Final.  For more on Billy Gonsalves, see Steve
Holroyd's Billy Gonsalves: An American Alltime Great and National Soccer Hall of
Famer Len Oliver's It Didn't Start With Pele.  Both are part of The American
Soccer History Archives.  Thanks to Art Narro for stressing the Gonsalves
connection.  Billy Gonsalves was born 100 years ago as of August 10th.

Namoff nabs D.C. win over Chicago

Late header in extra time defeats the Fire 2-1 against D.C. United
By Chris Snear / MLSnet.com Staff

GERMANTOWN, Md. -- Bryan Namoff finished a header from an impossible
angle in the third minute of the first extra period to steal a 2-1
victory for D.C. United against the Chicago Fire in their quarterfinal
match of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the Maryland SoccerPlex in
suburban Washington, D.C.

Namoff barely got his head onto a floating corner from second-half
substitute Jaime Moreno to the back post from the left flank, but it was
enough to get it by Jon Busch and send United to the semifinals where
they will face the New England Revolution.

Addition of D.C. forward leads to victory over Fire
By Charles Boehm / MLSnet.com Staff
GERMANTOWN, Md. -- An hour into Tuesday night's U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match
with the Chicago Fire, it looked like another nasty case of deja vu for D.C.
United. The Fire had marched into enemy territory and seized an early lead,
manhandling United with the same direct, physical style that has helped them
compile an amazing record of dominance over D.C. in cup competitions -- an 8-0
record over the Black-and-Red in MLS Cup and Open Cup action.
[...]

"I think Jaime's the best player ever, man. He's awesome," said defender Marc
Burch, sounding like a starstruck teenager. "When he came in he started holding
the ball and playing great balls and setting people up and working hard. When he
comes in he changes the game completely."

D.C. eliminates four-time Open Cup champion Chicago
By Charles Boehm / MLSnet.com Staff
GERMANTOWN, Md. -- Though it took more than 120 minutes, D.C. United finally
vanquished the Chicago Fire, their bogey team in knockout competitions, with a
2-1 come-from-behind victory at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Inspired by second-half
substitute Jaime Moreno, United erased a poor first half with late goals from
Francis Doe and Bryan Namoff to advance to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals for the
second time in the last three years.

Abe Thompson sure has a thing for timing.

The FC Dallas forwards scored goals in stoppage time at the end of both halves,
with the latter coming just moments before the final whistle, to push FC Dallas
over Miami FC 2-1 at Pizza Hunt Park.

It was Miami¢s goal machine who started the evening¢s scoring in the seventh
minute. Alex Afonso, the leading goal scorer in the USL First
Division, nutmegged two FC Dallas defenders before beating goalkeeper Raymond
Burse with a powerful shot, giving the USL-1 side a 1-0 lead. Sean Cameron
nearly doubled the lead in the 38th minute, but his shot hit the right post.
Miami looked to be headed into halftime with that lead, but Abe Thompson scored
the fifth Open Cup goal of his career in the third minute of stoppage time, off
a pass from Dominic Oduro.

Playing deep into second half stoppage time, Drew Moor sent a pass from 40 yards
out into the box, which Thompson reached and headed towards the right post.
Miami goalkeeper Josh Saunders got a hand on the shot, but could no stop it from
going in for the winning goal.

Dallas will host the Charleston Battery in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. The
two clubs met in the 2007 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, with FC Dallas emerging
with a 2-1 extra time victory.

NEW BRITAIN, CT – After nearly a two-hour lightning delay at Veterans Stadium,
the Richmond Kickers 2008 US Open Cup run came to an end, courtesy of a 3-0 loss
to the New England Revolution.  The Kickers held the defending Champions to a
scoreless first half before surrendering three goals to Sam Brill, Joe Germanese
and Taylor Twellman to finish the match.

The Kickers applied pressure out of the gates and could have taken an early lead
on an Adrian Bumbut attempt in the 19th minute.  Played through by forward
David Bulow, Bumbut rushed towards the goal and tried to touch it around
goalkeeper Doug Warren.  With effort, Warren charged off his line and made a
sliding stop to push the ball wide.

Minutes later, the Kickers looked dangerous again, this time with Richmond
sending an angled ball into the box from the left side.  An unmarked Stanley
Nyazamba ran through the defense, but misfired skyward from six yards.

Later, Twellman wanted to get on the board when a cross from the left side was
cleared poorly.  From eight yards out, Twellman could not get control of the
ball and made a feeble attempt from close-range.

The teams entered the break scoreless but the ice was broken shortly after the
second half restart when New England capitalized on a corner kick within one
minute from resuming play.  Midfielder Chris Tierney delivered an out-swinging
ball from the left side to Brill, who was making a near post run and buried a
diving header into the net.

Richmond missed a great chance to equalize in the 55th minute when Nyazamba
broke clear with the ball and sent a curling pass into the path of an onrushing
Bumbut, unmarked at the 25 yard line.  He carried the ball into the box and
drilled a shot from 15 yards as Warren came off his line but the keeper was able
to redirect the missile over the crossbar.

The Revolution doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when defender Chase
Hilgenbrinck played a long, diagonal ball a cross the field, finding Germanese
on the right wing.  The rookie midfielder dribbled into the box and struck a
low drive under the diving Ronnie Pascale.

New England sealed Richmond ’s fate five minutes later when Tierney picked up
his second assist on the night.  He swung a cross into the box from the left
side, finding Twellman in the air at the near post.  The header by the Revs
all-time leading scorer overpowered Pascale who got a hand on the ball but could
not stop the force.
Soon after, Twellman attempted to repeat his earlier goal when he received a
corner again at the near post.  He got a head on it but Kickers midfielder
Sascha Görres cleared it off the line to swing the momentum for one last
fighting chance to cut the deficit.  Richmond midfielder Ian Bennett carried
the ball unmarked down the right flank and crossed it in behind the defense to
forward Freddie Smith.  With an open goal his target, Smith’s free header was
cut short by Warren in an attempt to preserve his clean sheet.

Richmond are mid-way through a six-game road stand and have two more regular
season contests before their homecoming at the University of Richmond on
Saturday, July 12th.  The Kickers return to USL-2 action on Friday, July 4th to
take on the Real Maryland Monarchs before heading east to face the Bermuda
Hogges on Sunday, July 6th.
