Re: Fwd: Baltimore Colts Secure Region I Berth [CORRECTION]   Message List

Hello List,

I have heard from the coach of the Baltimore Colts Football Club and there
were some corrections and further information needed to the referenced story.
Here they are below:

(1) In 2001, the Baltimore Colts Football Club was known as Dipasquale
Baltimore Colts FC and won the National Open Cup for MD leg. Like Barilla in
2003, Dipasquale was the club sponsor for 2001.

(2) The Baltimore Colts FC also won the MD leg of the National Open Cup in
years 1996 and 1997.

(3) In 2005, the Baltimore Colts Football Club won the USASA National Open Cup
(Werner Fricker Cup). The Colts game with the PDL Richmond Kickers exemplifies
the difficulties confronting an ASASA traveling to take on a higher level club.
With regard to the 3-0 result in the Open Cup play against the PDL Richmond
Kickers, the game was played midweek, the team went to Virginia with only 12
players of which 3 were starters, and there was no head coach on the trip.
According to current coach, Frank Assaro, “VA deserved to win the match, no
doubt, but it wasn't our best.”

Item # 3 is why I love the USOC (not that clubs like the Colts cannot always
field a full side) but that they have the opportunity to take on the
professional organizations with more resources in a single elimination game.
They get the chance for lightning to strike and do something great. I loved how
in 2006 ASUSA side Dallas Roma FC first took down USL-1 team Miami FC which
included former FIFA World Cup winner Romário. Then in perhaps the biggest upset
in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup history, took down MLS side Chivas USA in penalty
kicks in Santa Barbara, CA. They then had to travel back to California to take
on the defending MLS champion Galaxy and put in another admirable performance.
Maybe Baltimore Colts FC could be the side we are all cheering for in 2008.

Sincerely,

Martin

Lotocki's goal and two assists pace club to 4-0 win

For the third time since 2003, Baltimore Colts FC will represent
Maryland in the Region I U.S. Open Cup Finals, after defeating
Maryland Allyance FC 4-0 at the Soccerplex in Germantown, Maryland on
March 2.

The Colts quickly took control of the match, scoring all four goals
in the first half. Mike Lotocki and Kyle Sterling combined for the
first two scores, with Sterling scoring twice off of corner kicks
from Lotocki in the 21st and 30th minutes. Sterling had also scored
the game winning goal in the Colts' 1-0 semifinal win over AC United.
Sterling's teammate at Salisbury State University, Bill Whittington,
gave the Colts a 3-0 lead off an assist from Guil Costa in the 35th
minute. Costa provided help again on the final goal, scored this time
by Lotocki himself.

BCFC's victory means that the last six Maryland Open Cup tournaments
have been won by either the Colts or AC United (formerly Allied SC),
both teams winning three apiece. The Colts now move on to the Region
I Open Cup Finals, which is slated to kick off in April. The Colts
will have no time to rest, however, as their tournament schedule is
still full in March. Next up is the Maryland U.S. Amateur cup final
on March 9 vs. Baltimore Bays 91, and then a Rowland Cup quarterfinal
match versus Select FC on March 30.

The Colts qualified for the U.S. Open Cup in 2005, were they were
defeated by the Premier Development League's Richmond Kickers Future
3-0.

Thanks Martin! Go Colts. But being Dallas Roma FC for 2008 will be a tough challenge. But it is always nice to see. ... May I mambo dogface to the banana...
