Landon Donovan was named the USA national team's
Player of the Year for 2004, becoming the first
three-time winner of the award.
The 22 year-old midfielder-forward was the youngest
Player of the Year award winner in 2002 and the first
player to win in consecutive years when he was honored
last year. With 355 points, Donovan finished ahead of
DaMarcus Beasley and Carlos Bocanegra. Beasley
received 272 points and Bocanegra had 131.
In order to be eligible for the award, a player must
play in a minimum of three games for the USA national
team during the calendar year.
"I still cannot believe that I won the Honda Player of
the Year Award for the third time," Donovan said.
"I am humbled and honored by this recognition once
again, and want to thank everyone who gave me this
honour and allowed me to make history by becoming the
first three-time winner."
In 2004, Donovan tied for the team lead with five
goals, including two in a World Cup qualifying match
against Panama.
