The San Diego Gauchos (FIFA d-3) traveled to Modesto to face the
California Gold in an U.S. Open Cup qualifier. It would be the final
qualifying game for both teams. The Gauchos knew that a loss would
have eliminated them and a draw might put them through. The Gauchos
needed the win to ensure a place in the tournament and they got it.
Dustin Hammond scored off a cross from Oscar Romo in the 35th minute
of play and ensured the victory 1-0. The Gold, already eliminated
from the tournament, were playing for pride and hopefully record
their first win of the season. The Gauchos played an intense game
that found them on the offensive side of the pitch most of the game.
The Gauchos dominated the match and had several scoring
opportunities. The match was getting a little heated with hard
tackles which forced a total of 8 yellow cards (5 to Gold and 3 to
Gauchos) from the referee. The Gauchos have beaten the Gold twice
this season and have two more meetings to go. The Guachos remain in
first place with 5 wins and 4 losses.
This is the second time in franchise history that the Gauchos qualify
for the U.S. Open Cup.
A -League's Minnesota Thunder eliminated the Gauchos back in June of
2002. This time the Gauchos look to better themselves and advance
further in the tournament. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer
tournament in the United States and goes back since 1914. The
tournament is open to all teams (professional or amateur) registered
with U.S. Soccer Association. The Gauchos will travel away for their
first game Open Cup game. They will play the winner of the Boulder
Rapids Reserves and Chico Rooks game. The Gauchos game will take
place on June 15th in either Chico, CA or Boulder, CO.
