On Sunday, May 3rd Region I kicks off its quarterfinals with several matches along the east coast. The winners will advance to the semifinals scheduled for May, 24th.
Emigrantes Das Ilhas (MA) will host the Pancyprian Freedoms (E-NY) at the Massasoit Community College Field in Brockton, MA, at 2:00 pm. The Freedoms claimed the 2008 National Open Cup title after defeating the Arizona Sahuaros (NPSL) 2-1 at the USASA finals in Seattle. Danbury United (CT), a 2008 National Cups participant, and US Parma of Champions League (NJ) will also play at 2:00 pm at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Danbury, CT. The Aegean Hawks out of Metropolitan DC/Virginia will face the VE Majors (E-PA) at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge in Warminster, PA. The match is slated for 2:00 pm. The Hawks lost the spot to the national finals to the Pancyprian Freedoms 3-2 at the Region I semifinals in 2008.
Next up is the game between intrastate rivals, Charm City (NPSL) and Christos, both from Maryland, at Cedar Lane Regional Park in Bel Air at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 3rd.
The Region I finals will conclude on June 21 with the winner advancing to the USASA National Cup Championships in Orlando, Fla., on July 24-26. Both, the winner and the runner-up, will also qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
