Switching to United - Dallas at RFK, rather than serving as validation for last year's Open Cup run, DC gets a reminder of their MLS record. Finish seventh or worse, and you get to qualify for the Open Cup through the MLS Play-In Tournament. As relative indignities go, MLS Cup finalists Red Bull NY are not only in the same situation, they're in the same bracket.
Should DC get by Dallas at home and New York win at San Jose next Wednesday, we get a matchup that could've waited for an actual Open Cup round. In concept, the play-in idea has merit. In practice, it's wasting games the tournament could use later on.
