Subject: Time Is Running Out for 100 PMU Foals--Please Help Us Spread the Word!

Winter has come early in Alberta—and that’s bad news for the mares and foals living on PMU ranches there. No longer needed for the production of hormone replacement therapy drugs, these equines need a place to go, and fast.

Because there is not enough grass to leave the animals on pasture, several of the PMU ranchers have decided to wean their foals at the end of the month. Any foals who have not been adopted by November 30, 2006, will be sent to auction—and an uncertain fate.

The California-based Animali Farm is working hard to find good adoptive homes for the more than 100 foals and mares facing the November 30 deadline. If you can give one of these equines a second chance, or if you would like additional information, please visit Animali Farm online or email animali@.... You can also call them directly at (805) 938-0174.

If you cannot adopt a horse, please forward this email to all of your horse friends. The only way to get these babies adopted is to get the word out to enough people, and we need your help to do it.

Thank you so much for caring.

SPREAD THE WORD
FYI, a number of people have remarked that they are interested in
attending/shopping at the USDF Trade Show however, don't want to pay
several hundred dollars for the entry fee. So straight from the horses'
mouth; Barb Ballard emailed me this morning, saying that they are
opening the trade fair to the public at no charge. Individuals simply
need to stop by the registration desk and ask for a Trade Fair only
badge.

Happy Shopping!

Landers Farms has just a few items left to sell. I paid over $3000 for my Premier Dressage Arena. It is lovely, but I might buy a simple one if someone wants to buy it for $2000.00. A few wooden jumps are still here and some waterers. Call if you are interested and ask for me  Linda, at 816-313-2276, or home 816-836-5951.
The full list is on my web site at Landersfarm.com. I do have a grain auger still for $500.00.
I also may have some fence the last weeks of the sale. Last week Dec. 10 through the 17th.

2007 California Dressage Society Annual Meeting & Symposium
Los Angeles Fairplex Park - January 19-21, 2007
Featuring

Ingrid Klimke
& Dr. Ina Gosmeier
Friday, January 19th - CDS Annual Meeting
Saturday & Sunday, January 20th & 21st - Symposium

Ingrid. Klimke is a National German Dressage champion and has written
"Cavalletti" with her father, "Basic Training of the Young Horse (German),
and has a new video "Success through Fitness" available in an English
version. She is a board member of the German Equestrian Federation, writes
articles, gives lectures, and runs her own stable in addition to her
training, teaching and competition schedule. Also, on August 6, 2006 Ingrid
won the 6-year old Finals at the 2006 World Championships in Verden with the
Westfalian Damon Hill. They reigned supreme with 9.24. Ingrid plans to use
cavallettis in her lesson plan to improve various training issues as well as
to add variety and gymnastics to the dressage horse's program. Ingrid would
like to show the classical training methods she learned from her dad and her
vast experience competing and riding as well as stressing the importance of
cross training for all horses.

Dr. Gösmeier's specialty is acupuncture, chiropractic, and kinesiology. Dr.
Ina supported the German Teams during the world championships in Jerez
(2003) and this past Olympics in Athens. She has published three books on
acupuncture, acupressure, and homeopathy since 1999. She also educates
fellow veterinarians as well as riders. As a Grand Prix rider herself, Dr.
Gösmeier concentrates her specialties primarily on sport horses.

Ingrid Klimke will be working with Dr Ina Gösmeier to mesh classical
philosophies and techniques with veterinary science and holistics. US Team
Coach Klaus Balkenhol strongly recommends Ingrid Klimke as a clinician. US
Olympian, Sue Blinks, has stated that Ms. Klimke "is one of her hero's" and
she has great respect for all of the things she has done and how she does
them.

Hello to All;

First I want to thank you for your input this year and your work on behalf of the GMO Council.  I know you seldom get a response for your 'constituency' but it's still useful for them to know you're available.

Could you let me know if you're planning on coming to the USDF Convention?

We also need moderators for our roundtable discussions.  The topics are:

1.  Educational activities that really work

2.  Volunteers:   how to find them, how to keep them

3.  How to establish your  by-laws and standing rules

4.  Helping your club to set goals/policy

5.  Open table

6.   Marketing your GMO (stated as how to attract new members by the person who suggested this topic)  which USDF will lead.

One of the discussions from last year was that leading the discussion kept your from taking notes for posting onto the gmoprez list after the Convention.  The suggestion was made that finding someone at your table to take the notes would be a better approach.   So leading the topic is more a matter of directing and soliciting information than providing it.

Would five of you be willing to volunteer for yet another job on behalf of the Council?

Could you also contact the GMO presidents on your list to remind them that their by-laws need to be on file with USDF?  Even if they're listed on the website, USDF needs a copy.    I'll repost this on the gmoprez list again, also.

We will have four GMO Council meetings:   a general membership meeting;  a meeting of the Council;  our roundtable discussion;  and our educational presentation.   I hope to see all of you at the Convention.

Best wishes,

Sherry Guess
GMO Council Chair

great suggestions

we got a little lucky in that my husband found a hawk one morning who had hurt its wing.  He was able to catch it by throwing a towel over it and then took it to our local wildlife rescue group.  It had a broken wing that they were able to set and when it had healed they wanted a "safe" place to release the hawk.  of course we offered our barn.  we set the hawk loose inside our indoor arena - has a large door that stays open at one end and then open along the top of the east wall.  The hawk comes and goes - we don't see him for a week and then he hangs around for a while.  We saw a big decrease in the birds.  And we noticed a significant decrease in birds in our other barns as well as when he is visiting.  fun story with an unintended result.  you might talk with a wildlife rescue group in your area as they are often looking to release rehabilitated birds of prey into a safe environment.

Other suggestions -
we have two cats that like to climb the rafters and they get into the nests - that has helped a lot but don't have a clue how you would train a cat to do this :)
Also knock down nests in the spring as soon as they start to build them so that they don't lay eggs.
Have used fly strips but tacked where they like to nest - stay in place well and the birds hate to step on them so they tend to avoid them.  i.e. tack along top of rafter.  not sticky enough to trap them but just discourage them.

I too have a 16 foot high arena.  You can buy rifle shells for .22 rifles that are loaded with shot rather than a single projectile.  This shot will not penetrate the building or even the insulation.  What I have is Winchester NO. 12 shot.  It is made for this and similar purposes.  We ended up shooting a bunch of them and then the rest just left and none ever came back.  I don't like doing it but it was the only way we could find to rid ourselves of them .  They will reproduce worse than rabbits if you don't get rid of them.
I read your next e-mail about steel spikes to put on cross beams and that would certainly be a preferable method if it works.  Good luck, please let us know how you handle the problem.

Oh lucky you!! I have watched a pigeon family increase its numbers in
my barn. They are afraid of NOTHING!!! I'll be watching this discussion
to see if anyone has any good ideas.
