Thanks to Linda Landers for organizing and hosting the USDF Region 4 meeting in Kansas City yesterday. There were ~ 25 people present, representing about half of the GMOs in our region. Notes were taken and I'm sure will be circulated soon. I am really excited about the plans for the 2006 USDF Annual Meeting and Symposium to be held in Kansas City and urge all Region 4 members to take pride in (and advantage of) having this in our home region.
I am going to serve as the Hospitality Chair for Region 4 and would welcome any help: your creative ideas about how to welcome the rest of the nation to our region and help making personal connections to dressage enthusiasts across the nation. Please, plan to participate in the 2006 annual meeting and symposium, and when you travel outside the region, invite other dressage lovers to come join us in Kansas City. Many people are not familiar
with the midwest and this is our opportunity to introduce them to all that is great about living here and to welcome them to our Region.
Please mark your calendars for November 29 - December 3, 2006, Westin Crowne Center and Hale Arena, Kansas City, MO. If you or friends from other regions plan to fly into Kansas City, USDF Events Consultant, Regine Scheck-Seberger, informed us the Region 12 Football Tournament will be that weekend, so make sure to book your flights early.
Contact me if you are willing to help with the development and/or implementation of a regional hospitality plan for the convention. This will be a fun committee for the region and I welcome your suggestions.
I would appreciate suggestions and input from Region 4 members regarding how to encourage USDF members to come to the 2006 annual meeting and symposium and to welcome them when they are here. I think this is a great opportunity to showcase our region, the birthplace of the USDF. It is a good time to reflect upon past meetings you have attended (USDF and other): what made it special for you? What encouraged you to come and made you glad you did so? What memory sticks with you (good or bad)?
If you would like to volunteer to serve on this regional ad hoc committee or have suggestions of other people who would add to the breadth of our committee, please let me know. I would love to add committee members from Nebraska, Iowa, and North Dakota to broaden our geographic coverage across the region. Please know, too, that Janet Blauvelt has volunteered to chair the Region 4 Volunteer
Committee (jblauvelt@...) and Joann Messersmith is chairing the Region 4 Booth Committee (joannm@...), so there will be multiple ways to help promote the Region at the annual meeting and symposium. I know Joann is taking offers of Silent Auction items and that Gerri Muldrow started the donations off by offering a free breeding to one of her stallions . . ..
We will do a more focused job on outreach and hospitality if we develop a plan outlining what we want to accomplish and how we plan to meet our goals. I appreciate your creative ideas and help. Thanks, too, Ellie Hardesty, for lending a young rider voice to the mix (more youth are encouraged to help out)! We want to make sure we welcome junior and young riders and help them feel this was an event that was very beneficial to their
dressage development. I think this is especially important because it may be the first large annual meeting some of the youth attend.
Janet Blauvelt volunteered to write an article covering 'things to do in Kansas City' to be distributed for print in GMO and PM newsletters. Thank you, Janet!
Our outreach plan, I believe, should include specific activities to reach the following groups:
Group members
Participating members
Business members
Intercollegiate/interscholastic members (most of whom are in school at that time of year) [possibly add IHSA and NCAA equestrian teams . . .]
I'd also like to encourage us all to consider how we might want to measure success. When we do a great job at hospitality, how will we measure it? Number of people who come to the convention and/or symposium (I believe Regine said USDF hopes to have 500 people come to the annual meeting)? Number of people who come for the first time (a 10% increase over last year)? The percentage of GMOs that send a delegate (80%)?
Please email me your suggestions, any special talents or contacts you have that might be useful to reach the groups above (or others I forgot), and any estimates you might have of costs associated with an outreach method (i.e., 'I'd like to send a personal invitation to come to the annual meeting to all GMO Presidents.
Estimated cost: $150). With your input, we should draft our hospitality outreach plan by the USDF ground breaking, so Linda has it for the Board meeting in Lexington in 3 weeks. We have eight months to build excitement and welcome the rest of the nation to our region.

Does anyone know about this show, if it is still on? It is not on the
USDF Breed Show Calendar nor in the Region 4 Omnibus. At
dressageinfo.com, there is only a prizelist for the KCDS Dressage Show
July 1-2, prior to the breed show.
I hadn't heard about any breed show semi-locally but would be interested also to find out details. Do you have a young one to go to the show this year? I have a two year old that I would be happy to get out if possible. Thanks, B.
Hi Laurie,
Yes, KCDS is hosting a breed show on Monday, July 3, 2006 at Longview Horse
Park. The decision was only made a few months ago and we are in the process
of getting all the paper work straight with USEF and USDF. Once that is
done it will be added to the website dressageshowinfo.com
Please feel free to contact me or the show manager Kris Tilson if you have
any further questions.
Thank you!
Kindra Wilson
KCDS President

USDF Now Accepting Nominations for YOUTH Volunteer of the Year
USDF is pleased to announce that it is accepting nominations for the 2006 USDF Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. This prestigious award honors one outstanding youth volunteer who has contributed on a national basis to USDF's mission: "Dedicated to education, the recognition of achievement, and the promotion of the sport of dressage."
Nominees must have volunteered at least 25 hours during

The award winner will also receive a "keeper" trophy and will be featured in the USDF Connection. This is the inaugural year of this award, made possible through funds raised at the USDF Youth Executive Board Silent Auction held yearly at the USDF Convention.
Nominations may be made by any USDF member and are due August 31. Forms are available at www.usdf.org/Programs/awards/index.asp. Send nomination forms or questions to Sheila Forbes, 220 Lexington Green Circle, Suite

I think since I reminded people to sign up that we will fill it with young riders. We hope to have an adult clinic in the fall in Nebraska and all adults that would like can sign up for that clinic. You will see reminders about it, when we get a clincian. Linda
One of our new advertisers in our year book is the Central Mobile Wash Service. This business is excellent. The man that came to me to clean my trailer spent hours and my 1990 trailer looked like new when he was done. He can do a group or several if you live a distance, but he does take a long time with each trailer. He has his own spraying system and just needs water to refill it. He is located in Paola. Please try using him. His rates are reasonable. It is like getting your car detailed. It is not like going to a car wash. I encouraged them to advertise with us and I hope that many of you will use the services they offer.
His number is 913-557-5710 and their email is Kathryn@.... I know that you will be pleased with the job that they will do for you.
I have one spot left in the Sonja Vracko Clinic next weekend. Just in time to work on those tests in front of the judge.... before the barrage of shows in May!
Rides are $145.00 singles
$130.00 per for both days.
Stalls are available Friday through Sunday.
Also, anyone wishing to audit please give me a heads up (call or send in your form), so I can have some goodies available. Please bring a chair if you are auditing.
