Hello to Region 4 members,

I have two separate issues where your help and feedback would definitely benefit the entire USDF membership.

First some background – At our Region 4 meeting at the December USDF annual convention I volunteered to work on a committee charged with forwarding a proposal to the Board regarding the disposition of funds collected as part of the $10 Regional Championships that was earmarked for a possible National Championship.

For the last few years, $2 of your $10 qualifying fee was set aside for a proposed national head-to-head championship competition.  Currently these funds total about $390,000 nationally.  However at this time nothing definite is in development foe this competition.  I’m in need of grass roots sentiment towards proceeding with a national head-to-head competition.  We need to consider the role of the Regional Championships and the future direction of the sport.  Obviously a National Championship would require enormous financial support, both from the membership as well as sponsors.

A straw pole taken at the convention indicated widespread support for continuing to search for a viable National Championship competition.  As this requires USEF blessings, your input is most valuable should we continue down this path.

Secondly, I also volunteered to head up a Ways and Means committee for our Region.  To more fully represent our regional membership I need some additional volunteers to join me, as I would like to have something to present at our regional meeting scheduled for April 1 & 2 in Kansas City.

I see this as a guide to members in our Region for benefits available from USDF and its supporters.

One example would be a listing of all the available grants and scholarships available with criteria for applications.  Many of these go unused due to lack of publicity.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Joyce Hardesty

Freestyle Clinic April 7-9 in Huron

Karen Robinson of www.applausedressage.com will be the clinician
for a FreeStyle Clinic in Huron, SD April 7-9, 2006.

The clinic will be helpful to riders/auditors and horses of all
levels. A Friday evening lecture will begin the weekend, with
dinner on your own in Huron (location TBA). Each rider will have
two mounted sessions over the weekend. There will be a group
session, Introduction to Riding to Music, perfect for those not
ready to prepare a freestyle ride, but wanting to experience the
benefits of riding to music. Group sessions for Quadrille riders
are encouraged! And individual lessons are available for those
wanting to concentrate on preparing a freestyle ride for competition.

Ms. Robinson has competed through FEI, and has designed freestyles
for riders of all levels, including designing the Canadian team's
Quadrille for the Challenge of the Americas! A personable and
approachable woman, Karen works with riders of all levels; and as a
Canadian, she is prepared to travel to SD in April! J

Auditing is only $25 for all or any part of the weekend! USDF
University Credit is available for all attendees.

Riders can choose from:
Intro to Riding to Music Package (lecture plus TWO group lessons)
$140**
Quadrille Group (lecture plus TWO group lessons) $140**
Private Package (lecture plus TWO private lessons) $185**

** Please note that we have applied for a grant from The Dancing
Horse Fund (The Dressage Foundation); we have not been told if we
have this grant yet. If we get grant money, we will reduce the
price of the rider fees. The audit price is already such a great
deal, it will remain the same; similar clinics have had audit fees
of $40-50.

Please note that a deposit of $50 is required to hold all rider
slots, due by 2/15, with the balance of the clinic payment due by
3/15. Please email me for registration coupon! Contact Joann with
any questions; 605-941-3398 or joannm@....

****************

All you folks interested in the L program, I understand that you do
need to show competence & knowledge in free styles - so this may be
something you want to add to your resume! We have room for plenty
of auditors!! This is a very reasonable auditor fee, only $25. The
host hotel, CrossRoads, is very nice. Your significant other may be
interested in coming too - there is a Cabellas Store in Mitchell,
not too far from the clinic location :-) and some good fishing for
the die hards interested in april fishing... and an indoor pool &
hot tub for those more interested in warmth & relaxation!

The purpose of this letter is to let you know that the proposed rule change for GR203.7 has been approved and is effective 12-1-05. Please note: The membership applications have a join date on them. The competition secretary will have to put that join date in. Dressage competitions should put the day it was done. All other competitions should put the first day of the competition as the join date. The rule now reads as follows:
GR203. Membership Classifications.
7. Membership is effective the date the correct application fees are received in the Federation office. Exception: Applications for Federation Individual Membership submitted at recognized Competitions are considered effective on the start date of said competition provided the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary and the application is signed by the Competition Secretary and the Competition Steward/TD during the period of the competition.
Exception: Dressage Competition, reference Bylaw 223, Section 1- Applications for Federation Individual Membership submitted at licensed Competitions are considered effective on the date the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary provided the application is signed and dated by the Competition Secretary and the Competition TD on that same day.
To clarify, the first exception states that when a membership application is completed at a competition, the effective date of the membership is the start date of the competition provided the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary and the application is signed by the Competition Secretary and the Competition Steward/TD during the period of the competition.
The newest exception is for a Dressage Competition, (Dressage Competition being defined in Bylaw 223, Section 1). This exception states that when a membership application is completed at a competition, the effective date of the membership is the date the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary provided the application is signed and dated by the Competition Secretary and the Competition TD on that same day.
Please Note: There have also been changes to the following rules which are directly related to the change above: GR902.1, GR902.2 and GR1504.1.
GR902. General.[Chapter 9 - FEDERATION NATIONAL, DISTRICT, REGIONAL AND ZONE HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARDS]
1. Applications for Federation Individual Membership and Horse Recordings submitted at recognized Competitions are considered effective on the start date of said competition provided the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary and the application is signed and dated by the Competition Secretary and the Competition Steward/TD during the period of the competition. Exception: Dressage Competition, reference Bylaw 223, Section 1 - Applications for Federation Individual Membership submitted at recognized Competitions are considered effective on the date the application and dues are received by the Competition Secretary provided the application is signed and dated by the Competition Secretary and the Competition TD on that same day.

A huge thank you to Bill Des Barres for helping at the meeting with procedures and chairing the elections.Bill has been a wonderful resource and has offered to continue.

Also a huge thank you to Dianne Winkelman-Sim for educating us on the importance of genetic testing.   Dianne was a wealth of information.

Now the real work begins. I suggest that we need to set some timeline goals and meeting schedule. I am proposing monthly board meetings and committee meetings (either by web meetings or teleconferencing - anyone with experience in web meetings?)  every 2 weeks. We have lots of work to do and the sooner we get going the better. We also need volunteers for the following:

studbook/inspections - sub committee of law review

programs (shows, education, awards)-

publicity and marketing -

and we need to set up regions and have regional representation.

As Christy Weese is going to be extremely busy keeping the Sport Pony Canada Magazine running, as well as her own graphic design business, and coaching/training, she would love it if someone would volunteer to take over the position of Secretary or at least help out.  The position would basically be handling the mailing list, memberships (be proficient with email).  Christy would be able to set up any forms.

Please remember that we are run completely by volunteers and these people do have a life outside of Sport Pony Canada . We welcome constructive criticisms, helpful ideas, appreciation and the occasional winning lottery ticket!  It is my sincere hope that we can keep focused on the greater good of the sport pony industry.

For those of you who attended the JW Equine "Improving Your Eye For Conformation" presentation, I am sure you learned a whole new way of looking at your horses/ponies! It is my recommendation that we require our inspectors to attend at least two clinics with Judy Wardrope. I also think that hosting a series of clinics would not only be very educational and place Sport Pony Canada on the cutting edge of this new method, and could be a very good fundraising activity.

For Immediate Release                                         December 28th, 2005

2006 NAYRC Qualifying Criteria and Selection
Procedures Now Available

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that the 2006 North American Young Riders' Championships (NAYRC) Qualifying Criteria and Selection Procedures for dressage competitors are now available. All riders interested in qualifying for the 2006 NAYRC should obtain a copy of this information. Included in the procedures is information on how to declare your intent to qualify for this event.  A rider's declaration of intent to qualify for the NAYRC is due to USDF by
March 1, 2006.
The NAYRC is the premier competition for young riders, ages 16-21, in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of eventing, dressage, and show jumping. Riders are invited to compete from each province of Canada, U.S. Equestrian zone (for show jumping), USDF region (for dressage) and United States Eventing Association area (for eventing), as well as from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and Bermuda via each country's national equestrian federation. The broad range of competitors attending the championships produces an Olympic-like atmosphere.
The 2006 NAYRC will be held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA, August 1-6. To obtain a copy of the 2006 NAYRC Qualifying Criteria and Selection Procedures, go to http://www.usdf.org/Programs/NorthAmericanYoungRider/2006.asp or contact Sheila Forbes, USDF director of programs, at (859) 271-7879 or sforbes@....
Founded in 1973, the United States Dressage Federation is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to education, the recognition of achievement, and the promotion of the sport of dressage. For more information about USDF membership or programs, visit www.usdf.org, e-mail usdressage@..., or call (859) 971-2277.

Roster Chairs:

(PLEASE PRINT AND RETAIN A COPY OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR RECORDS)
Attached you will find your GMO's roster in an excel file to be used for 2006 submissions.  If you would like a hard-copy of this roster mailed to you please just respond to this email requesting the print-out.  Otherwise, please make any necessary additions or changes to the roster.  You will notice that after the USDF number field, there is a blank field titled "STATUS."  This is the field for you to use to mark members as either NEW, EDIT, or to leave blank.
Following the “STATUS” field is a field named “TYPE.”  In this field, you will denote whether a name on the roster is to be entered as Individual, Primary, or Supporting.  Please make sure that all Primary Members are directly followed by the Supporting members of that family.  Also, keep in mind that a family is defined as members in an immediate family who either live at the same address or who have the same legal address.  Please see additional information about USDF Family Membership below.
All members on this roster that are NOT current at the time of your submission should be saved by you to use for submission of future updates.
Please return to me ONLY the current members to be added to your roster.  Also, when making updates to your roster throughout the year, please send in additions ONLY, not full rosters.  This roster will be a constant exchange between your club and the USDF office through the current year.  If you have any questions or need any assistance in updating or submitting the roster, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Membership rosters and dues, and the name of the official USDF contact of each Group Member Organization, are due in the USDF office by March 1.  Rosters must be faxed, emailed or USPS postmarked on or before April 1, along with dues, which can be submitted with a credit card number or, if mailed, USPS postmarked on or before April 1, in order to avoid late penalties.
New USDF Group Membership Year:
As you all know, the 2006 Group Membership year is a shortened year (April 1, 2006 to November 30, 2006) to allow for the conversion to the new year which will run from December 1 to November 30.  Dues for the 2006 Group Membership year have been prorated at $11.33 per individual and Primary Family member and $5.33 for Supporting Family members.  (NOTE: The new Family Membership Category is OPTIONAL.  However, it is in clear violation of USDF By-Laws for any members of your GMO to be left off of the roster on file with USDF)
Please keep in mind that this conversion means that you will be submitting rosters to USDF twice during the 2006 calendar year.  The original roster submission for the 2006 year (April 1 to November 30) will be due in the office no later than March 1, 2006 just as in the past.  The original roster for the 2007 year (December 1 to November 30) will be due in the office no later than November 1, 2006.

New USDF/GMO Family Membership:
The new family membership category will be in effect for next year (April 1, 2006).  You can elect to offer a family membership within your GMO.   You will then report your family memberships to USDF, naming one as primary, at the full dues amount, and all other members within that family as supporting family members, at a greatly reduced amount.
KEEP IN MIND THAT, ACCORDING TO USDF BYLAWS, “ALL INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE DUES-PAYING MEMBERS OF THE GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION SHALL BE CONSIDERED GROUP MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES DRESSAGE FEDERATION.”

Instructions:
    1.      If you need to add new members who are not on this roster, please add them at the bottom of the list and type "NEW" in the status field.
    2.      If a member listed on this roster is active for the 2006 GM Year, and has had no change to their contact information, you may leave the status field BLANK.
    3.      If a member is not active for the 2006 GM Year, please type "NA" in the status field and keep in your list to be used for submissions of updates throughout the year.
    4.      If you need to edit any part of an individual's information please type "EDIT" in the status field of active members.  This will help to reduce the amount of duplicate records created and keep USDF Member information up to date.  (Also, please BOLD the edited fields)

Memorandum

Date: November 28, 2005
To: Dressage Compeition Managers
From: Jennifer Keeler, USEF National Director of Dressage
Subject: Dressage Competition Recognition

As dressage becomes more and more popular with exhibitors and therefore increasing numbers of competitions looking to offer these classes, confusion among managers and competitors alike is being reported to USEF in regards to a competition's "rating", especially as it relates to single-breed shows. Last month, a notice addressed to "Breed Show Managers and Organizers" was distributed to managers and officials listed in the USEF database. Please note the descriptions included in the memo are NOT applicable to Open Dressage Competitions (rated "N" for non-rated) or to Dressage Sport Horse Breeding (DSHB) divisions.

As clarification and for your information, currently there are three (3) ways that dressage may be offered at USEF-Recognized Competitions:

  1. Open Dressage Competitions. These are jointly recognized by USDF. These competitions, open to all breeds and offering a full range of dressage classes and levels (such as MSEDA Dressage at the Kentucky Horse Park) are where competitors may qualify for USEF/USDF Regional Championships, High Performance, etc. These competitions must be held in accordance with Dressage Division rules (Chapter DR), and are considered non-rated (N) per Rule GR208.4.
  2. Regular Competitions may offer open, all-breed dressage division(s) or classes. Regular competitions may be single breed (such as Arabian) or multi-breed (Saddlebred and National Show Horse), and are rated (A, B, or C) "for the purpose of reckoning points towards Federation Annual Horse of the Year Awards" (GR208.3). These Regular Competitions may offer an "open" dressage division or classes where horses of any breed may participate. As with #1 above, these classes MUST be held under Dressage Division rules. (This means that Dressage saddlery and warmup restrictions apply to ALL horses competing in the Dressage division/classes.) However, please note this is not an actual Dressage Competition - it is only a single dressage division or set of classes within a separately-rated Regular Competition.
  3. Regular Competitions may also offer breed-restricted dressage division(s) or classes (for instance, Morgans only). As with #2 above, please note this is NOT a Dressage Competition - this is only a single division or set of classes within a separately-rated Regular Competition. In these breed-restricted dressage division(s) or classes, specific breed division rules may preclude Dressage Division rules, and when only specific levels are offered, stewards may officiate instead of Dressage Technical Delegates. (See DR125.3) Horses may cross enter between Dressage and other divisions on the same days they compete in Dressage classes if permitted by Breed division rules.

Per Rule DR127 and USEF selection procedures, and USDF program requirements, open all-breed USEF-recognized "Dressage Competitions" (#1, above) are the ONLY instance where competitors may earn qualifications for High Performance, USEF/USDF Regional Championships, USDF Breeders' Championship Series, USEF Championship programs (such as Young Horse), etc. However, since specific breeds (such as Arabians) also offer breed awards for dressage, many rated Regular Competitions for these breeds choose to conduct open or breed-restricted dressage classes. Holding open classes allows breed competitors to earn scores towards open USDF Horse of the Year awards, and competitors riding any breed of horse more competitive opportunities. However, as stated above, qualifying classes for USEF/USDF Regional Championships may not be offered at these shows.

Great discussion at our table regarding fundraising... our facilitator had
gathered ideas via the web from many club, and compiled a list from those emails
of what people are doing across the country.

We started out with a hand out listing general, long term fund raising that many
clubs do: membership fees, running shows, ads & sponsroships for shows
(including banner ads on club websites), ads in club newsletters, concessions at
shows, T shirts/hats/etc with logos, equine services directory sold at local
tack stores & clubs, cookbooks, running L program clinics or instructor
workshops.

Several participants also mentioned that they sell vendor sites at their shows
(recognized and schooling shows); prices on vendor spaces began at $50 & went
up. Most clubs charge more for "premium" spaces, ie, by the door, etc.

Other special fundraising events listed on our handout included tack sales,
garage sales, silent auctions at award dinners, chinese auctions of donated
labor, raffles of donated items, car washes, pony club kids (caring for horses
at camps/clinics/shows, or by selling hand made horse cookies), purchasing a
ring by the buy a brick/buy XX feet by sponsor.

Our group talked about a silent auction done at the regionals for region 9
recently. They got donated items, then the proceeds of the auction went to the
GMOs the show volunteers were from. The GMOs got a % of the proceeds based on
the % of volunteer hours their GMO members contributed. They plan to have this
grow every year. The host GMO did not benefit from the auction.

Several GMOs have raised significant funds via raffles. One gal discussed how
each year a local electronics store donated a large screen TV, then the club
sold raffle tickets. They got to use the TV w/ the sponsor banner displayed at
the horse fair, shows, etc. for running GMO & promotional videos... then did the
raffle at the awards banquet at the end of the year. Usually the item is
purchased at a significant discount by the GMO, not entirely free.

At the Raleigh CDI there was a dunking booth, and for $5 you bought a ball to
try to dunk trainers. the trainers got to display advertising at the dunk tank.

Other GMOs have built judges booths by selling ad space on the booth. The booth
can be mobile (ie, built on a trailer), and the ads are not placed on the side
that faces the ring. Design the ad space & selling price to pay for the booth.

Tuesday, December 6, I have just been notified that the Lexington, Kentucky will be the host of the 2010 World Equestrian Games. This is the first time the FEI has granted a country to host this event outside Europe.
This is wonderful important news to share with your members of your GMOs. 2007 the World Cup will be held in Las Vegas again and in 2006 our convention will be held in Kansas City with a symposium. There are many events in the future to look forward to if you love watching dressage and seeing beautiful horses and riders at the highest level of our sport.

Ok, coffee in hand... wearing my long underwear (its about 2 degrees now, with
wind chill advisory for the day, wind chills of 15 to 30 below expected).... it
was tough to leave CA... of course, it was tough to get there, with the snow &
ice we had here...

so, my snynopsis of being an incredibly lucky Ruth Arvanette Grant winner... the
grant pays for convention registration & airfare & 1/2 of the hotel... a very
generous grant indeed, and made my CA trip possible. I would not have gone if
it were not for the grant... and the amount I learned made me realize how
important that every single one of us try to come to convention in KC next
year!!!

Some highlights... and I'll post more details as the week goes on... lots to
catch up on yet (I got back to my house about 1115 pm sunday night, and had to
be to work... bummer! lol)

I was pretty star struck, standing next to the Balkenhols... hearing Hilda
Gurney talk about the double bridle (she put together an amazing video about
fitting & use of the double, part of the educational session), and watching
Steffan Peters ride in the symposium & in warm up!! and his wife Shannon. wow!
then to walk outside & see Leslie Morse doing a press interview... wow! Not
something that happens in every day life in SD!!! ;-)

Thursday night at the Gala I got to briefly meet the other Ruth Arvanette
winners... and am humbled! Scarlet is helping start a GMO in AZ, and they are
only 1 year old!! Sarah Blanchard is the author of two books, and a member of a
GMO in Haiwaii, on the big island. Sarah B. and I had some talks about
logistics within our GMOs... nice gal! I did not get to talk to scarlet much
though...

I learned so much, in so many directions, from show management, volunteer
management, to work in the double, to the sessions with the horses bones drawn
on & then watching him work... later I'll post in depth stuff...

More soon!

Subject: Some GMO notes from the USDF convention
Hi, Everyone,
I had hoped to send you messages throughout the convention to make it more 'Live!', but my purchased wireless access at the Hilton only worked in the lobby and the restaurant. Geeze, I spent most of my time in meetings and social events. My only time in the lobby was in line for Starbucks!
First of all, I would like to thank Sherry Guess for doing a fantastic job organizing the GMO sessions and for being there representing GMO interests in each and every meeting she attended. In so many Committee or Council meetings I attended, there was Sherry, representing the GMO Council. Way to go, Sherry!
Plus, I loved how active the GMO Council meetings were and appreciated members' willingness to speak up and to share great ideas. I'm sure I missed some of them unintentionally. Please forgive me and send your ideas to the GMO Prez listserve, too.
Lastly, I was able to attend the meeting (for the first time ever) with another member of my GMO, Joann Messersmith. That was really fun and we appreciate the Ruth Arvanette scholarship she was given to attend. Two other friends were supposed to join us but got blocked by the 'Blizzard of 2005' and the roads weren't open from their neck of the woods when it was time to head for the airport. Sorry, Teddie and Lacey!
I also attended the Gala Salute for the first time. Selfish purpose: to accept the Region 4 Volunteer of the Year award. I typically am rather (ok, very) shy about these kinds of things and never feel like I really know what to do, say, or feel (I am very emotional and feel a million things at once typically). The GMO awards were given out at the beginning of the evening, shortly after dignitaries in the room were mentioned (owners of Olympic horses, Olympic riders past and present, people who started and shaped the sport and art of dressage for decades, etc.). Hearing about them and then having my own name announced shortly after, my knees almost buckled, plus I was about to burst into tears. I had been humbled, amazed, and thrilled with the award from the second I learned about it since there are so many dedicated volunteers in every GMO and region, but sitting in that room and feeling connected to a very big and multilayered system established to benefit the horse, I was
practically overwhelmed and so very thankful. For once in the presence of dignitaries, I was NOT embarrassed to be a 43-year old First Level rider or ashamed to say my riding time is limited due to other demands on my life. We all still have our place in the system and, frankly, our horses depend on it.
My notes from the entire convention are lengthy, so I'm going to condense them into specific meetings. I hope they are of interest to you. Sometimes I write in a bit of shorthand, so if something doesn't make sense, please let me know.
Cheers,
Sarah Patrick

GMO Round Tables
There were approximately 7 tables with 12 seats each. Most tables had facilitators assigned to them and some had a special topic (fund raising, membership retention) based on the special knowledge of the facilitator. The plan was to 'speed chat' and go from table to table, every 5-10 minutes, but most people started talking and didn't leave their original group. We had representation from most regions at my full table, which was on general GMO topics. We started our discussion about use of the GMO President's listserve. Only two of us had been on it! That site is www.yahoogroups.com/group/GMOPrez. Like this listserve, you can receive a digest version once a day if that helps you manage your emails. Several people were interested in joining it and suggested we add the web-site link to the GMO page on the USDF web-site. I talked to Ross Creech about this after the meeting and he thought this could definitely be done. Still, it stressed the need to make sure to keep 'talking up' the listserve, for instance, at your regional meetings, or when you meet people from other GMOs at shows/clinics/educational events. There was some general confusion about who could join the listserve (pretty much anyone in a GMO who is interested!). Paul Cormier, NEDA President (and USDF Volunteer of the Year) presented to all at the meeting a grassroots movement to raise money for the USDF building by having USDF's 'leading men' (remember: there was a Hollywood theme) wear a t-shirt he designed that said 'Dressage' on the front and on the back said, 'Where real men don't have room for a saddle horn' (or something close to that). If Sam (USDF President), George (USDF Vice President), and Stephen (USDF Executive Director) all wore the t-shirts for the entire day of the Board of Governor's meeting, NEDA would contribute up to $5,000 in matching funds to funds raised from people wanting to encourage the t-shirt use. By the way, Sam, I guess, NEVER wears t-shirts at shows/meetings. More on this topic later when I or others post information on the BOG, which was the WILDEST event at a USDF activity I've EVER been to!! By the way, my GMO, Dakota Dressage & Eventing, contributed $50 for NEDA to match.
Topics of current importance to GMOs in attendance at my table included updating bylaws (where to get examples, how to get members to read, understand, and apply them); revamping scholarship programs; and trouble getting children/youth started in dressage. The GMO Prez listserve was again discussed, since these topics had been discussed and the listserve used to connect people to resources outside their area. The Morgan Dressage Association was complimented for having wonderful scholarship program, plus Morgan dressage shows, and a distance-based mentoring program. Some GMOs (or Regions) had scholarship dollars but had trouble giving scholarships or grants away (take home message: ask your GMO or Region--there may be scholarship $$ there you aren't aware exist). Even when the application ccriteria were not difficult, people did not apply for some GMO/Regional scholarships. Suggestions included continuing putting notices in newsletters, broadening to newsletters other than the GMO newsletter, or making the scholarship program a part of an assigned elected position in the GMO. One participant said her GMO's scholarship program was part of the VP job description and thought that helped the VP focus on educating members about what was available. Replacing funds in a scholarship program was also mentioned and some examples given were (a) broadening beyond your current membership, through silent auctions or sales to a more general horse (or non-horse) crowd, (b) on-line buying clubs that contribute funds back to non-profits (e.g., Amazon.com,
www.countrysupply.com which as a Country Cares program, even Wal-Mart). These are helpful because they give something back to the GMO for items the person would have likely purchased anyway.
Recruiting and Developing Leaders--One participant was a member of a chapter-based GMO and although they had 230+ members in her chapter, it was always difficult to get people to run for office. One participant said that when her GMO set up term limits, more people were willing to run for office because they felt they wouldn't be 'stuck' for a long time. Another GMO starts passing around the USDF GMO Handbook in the summer to members who have been identified to have 'leadership potential'. The Handbook gives them guidance and some reassurance about the duties of running a GMO, plus they feel honored to have been identified as having potential. Another GMO has a Nominating Committee that divides up the entire membership list and starts calling members in the spring to ask them to run for fall elections. Another GMO member had this suggestion for GMO's who do not have monthly meetings for the general membership. Pick half the members who have board member potential. Invite
them to a board meeting, so they get involved before they are asked to run for office. She said their board meetings were always open but no one but board members came unless directly ASKED.
Another topic are was about cross activities with other GMOs and other organizations (4-H, Pony Club, IMOs). One participant was in a GMO in a very (geographically) small state that had another GMO. She mentioned how joint educational activities could benefit both GMOs and share volunteers. CSDEA has a very active High school dressage program that helps reach kids who are members of hunter/jumper clubs/barns and breed associations. State horse fairs were also mentioned as a way to let people who like horses know about and possibly experience a little dressage. It was stressed that BAD dressage could do a lot to turn people away, too. To help POSITIVELY attract people to dressage these clinicians were suggested Janet Brown, Trip Harding, Kay Meredith, Lilo Fore, and Rachael Saavedra, to name a few. Work with the very top organizer at your horse fair to try to insert good dressage. Outreach to other horse clubs--it was mentioned that people with 'alternative horses' would really like encouragement from dressage clubs/shows to join in the fun. One participant gave the example of the Morgan Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK, which had 2.5 days of shows. Dressage competition was through GP and had about 80 horses (all levels) participate (of the 1200 present). A suggestion was made to write an article for Connection with tips of what to do to reach other equestrian clubs/groups/breed associations to make them feel more comfortable and enhance participation in dressage (if they aren't already).
Lastly, we talked about GMO members, especially the adult amateur. A great quote from one of our participants was " We are the algi in the food chain-everything else would die if it wasn't for us." Leslie Weiss, CT. If we do outreach to people doing other activities we need to realize the common ground is the lower level-not the glamour. Clinics - some GMOs felt you have to have some glamour names to draw people in. One participant mentioned a great demonstration Lilo Fore and Lendon Gray had Courtney King, Lendon's working student at the time, do for a clinic. She started with a canter pirouette and then would devolve it to see what every level and horse/rider would be able to do and what it would look like. I mentioned a videotape Lendon showed at a banquet we held. In it, her working student rode the same horse in the frame/movements from Training Level through Grand Prix AND THEN BACK DOWN. It was not a commercial video--just something Lendon had taped at one of the
demos at her junior riders event.
Another clinic along that line was at a private barn where a local AQHA judge heard that Axel Steiner was going to give a clinic. He had been having some trouble with flying changes with a western horse and asked the clinic organizer if he could come. Axel treated with him with the respect of one judge working with another and the man rode in with a curb bit and western saddle, appropriate for his area of expertise. The clinic was audited by many other western riders in the area and this helped build a bridge. We talked about gaps that sometimes happen-people who only show at schooling shows and feel they simply are not 'good enough' to move up to a recognized show. Or, the situation in which a handful of GMO members get accepted as the riders for all the the clinics with the big name trainers. Some suggestions given were: hold amateur only clinics, allocate a clinic or recognized show ride-time slot to schooling show champions, organize clinics so each chapter sends someone for free to the big name clinic. There was a WEALTH of great ideas over topics for unmounted clinics-pilates, getting ready for shows, braiding, first aid (horse and human-offered with local fox hunt club), Hilary Clayton session on horse biomechanics, winter on-line book clubs, training scribes, 'Its all in Your Seat' series (did involve demo riders and everyone got to do some pilates, stretching), lateral aids (50-60 people showed up 2 weeks before the first schooling show)., managing fear in sport performance (could be given with another sport club), ring geometry. [I apologize because I think I missed some of the great suggestions given!--SLP]. Lastly, one participant reminded us all, 'Know what your club's mission is, who you are serving, and what they want and need. Then your activities will be successful.'
It was a great pleasure to serve as a facilitator for a GMO Council Round Table. I had a fun bunch of old and new friends participate and I look forward to reading your messages on the GMO Prez listserve and seeing you again, face-to-face in Kansas City, my home region, next November.
Cheers,

Lastly, we talked about GMO members, especially the adult amateur.  A great quote from one of our participants was “ We are the algi in the food chain—everything else would die if it wasn’t for us.”  Leslie Weiss, CT.  If we do outreach to people doing other activities we need to realize the common ground is the lower level—not the glamour.  Clinics – some GMOs felt you have to have some glamour names to draw people in. It was not a commercial video--just something Lendon had taped at one of the demos at her junior riders event.

We talked about gaps that sometimes happen—people who only show at schooling shows and feel they simply are not 'good enough' to move up to a recognized show.

There was a WEALTH of great ideas over topics for unmounted clinics—pilates, getting ready for shows, braiding, first aid (horse and human—offered with local fox hunt club), Hilary Clayton session on horse biomechanics, winter on-line book clubs, training scribes, 'Its all in Your Seat' series (did involve demo riders and everyone got to do some pilates, stretching), lateral aids (50-60 people showed up 2 weeks before the first schooling show)., managing fear in sport performance (could be given with another sport club), ring geometry. [I apologize because I think I missed some of the great suggestions given!--SLP].

Lastly, one participant reminded us all, 'Know what your club’s mission is, who you are serving, and what they want and need.

Cheers,
