Our gratitude goes out to the people involved in the recent USDF
Young Riders clinic with George Williams. My daughter, Mimi Stanley was
fortunate to ride in the clinic. What a great learning experience for
her & 7 other young dressage riders. Maryanne Mahowald, clinic
coordinator, had things organized down to the last detail & made the
girls feel welcome & very special. There was a summer gift bag of fun
surprises waiting at each stall, a lovely bedded stall with fans & fresh
water waiting for each horse & a well groomed arena with lessons
videoed. Special lunches with Mr. Williams for theory & camaraderie
plus a lovely dinner at Maryanne's home topped it off. Our thanks also
goes out to Kate Phillips of Mississippi View Farm for hosting this
clinic. Friendly & helpful it was a great place to learn. The wealth
of knowledge that George Williams imparted was extremely valuable to
every participant & auditor. Simply put he made a world of difference
in these girl's horses & their riding all with a positive & enthusiastic
approach. I want to share with you the joy on Erika Mahlen's face when
he said at the end of her lessons "you are ready!" She will be our
representative for Region 4 at the upcoming NAYRC. Lets all give her
our support. But last I want to thank USDF & Sheila Forbes for without
this program where would our dressage future be??? Regards, Karla
Stanley

Cesar Parra Symposium Update

The deadline for application for the Cesar Parra Symposium has been extended to
August
1. Contact Kathy O'Brien at KOBrien21@... for rider/audior application.

The symposium will be held October 15-16 at White Fox Manor, Olathe, KS (just
outside of
Kansas City)

The cost for riders will be $200 per ride and an application process is being
developed for
the selection of riding participants. KCDS members may attend the symposium as
auditors
for $40 per day or $75 for the weekend. Non-members may attend at a cost of $60
per
day or $100 for the weekend.

ABOUT DR. CESAR PARRA

Dr. Parra, a Columbian native, has been competing as an international dressage
rider since
1995. He has competed in the 2004 Olympics, the 2002 World Equestrian Games, and
the
1999 and 2003 Pan American Games. He has also been a frequent winner in the
United
States having taken highest honors at Dressage at Devon, CDI Wellington and CDI
Raleigh.
Dr. Parra and his Olympic mount, Galan du Serein, have qualified as one of the
18 riders
selected for the 2005 World Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also aiming his new
horse,
Wild Dance, for the 2008 Olympics.

Since 1999, Dr. Parra has provided full service training at the Piaffe
Performance Farm in
Whitestation, New Jersey. Dr. Parra's philosophies by which he conducts his life
are
courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, sharing and strength of
character, and he
tries to pass on these same qualities to his students. His training methods are
based on
the Classical German Training Scale: relaxation, rhythm, contact, impulsion,
straightness
and collection.

Dr. Parra's classical training combined with his international competition and
teaching
experience offers riders and auditors a wonderful educational opportunity. The
symposium format will allow him to interact with both riders and auditors as he
uses the
horses and riders to demonstrate his training methods and philosophies. You will
see
these principles applied through the levels. All participants will also have the
chance to
attend a dinner and lecture with Dr. Parra on Saturday night.

There is an Awesome Accomplishment in progress!!

I wanted to take a moment and publicly thank our show management
team, Sarah Patrick (show manager), and Melanie Ware (show
secretary).

The Dakota Dressage & Eventing (DDE) recognized show, dubbed "Dakota
HorseFest" this year, as it is being held at the SD state fair
grounds next weekend with several other breed shows running the same
weekend, has become larger than ever.

Let me give you a little history to put this incredible
accomplishment in perspective. We are a GMO of about 100 members
now…

In 2002, we held a one-day show, 73 entries…
2003, one-day show, 81 entries…
2004, we moved to a 2-day show format, and had 119 entries.

This year… We added an adult & youth team competition on Friday,
moving to a 3 day format… and have 297 entries! We hired a second
judge & will run a second ring for about 9 hours over the weekend!

So Melanie & Sarah – for all the hours of data entry, scheduling,
fielding calls from inexperienced competitors, taking the time to
train us less experienced folks in how to do all this stuff! and all
the behind the scenes work of running a show – while juggling your
own horses, family commitments, & full time jobs - THANK YOU!

To all the people who are volunteering at the show, and before, and
after - THANK YOU! Every little task that YOU do makes this become a
reality!

When you see these phenomenal folks, tip your hat! We are really a
lucky GMO to have people like this!

Senate Highway Bill - Recreational Trails Funds - Equestrian Language

The Senate has passed a $295 billion highway funding bill, which provides
approximately $270 million for the Recreation Trails Program (RTP) over the
next five years. The Senate bill provides more overall funding for highway
and transit programs, but allocates less money for RTP than the House
version of the bill, which was passed on March 3.

Differences between the two bills will now have to be worked out by a
Conference Committee of both House and Senate representatives. This
Committee is expected to convene shortly. While the hope is to reconcile
the differences between the two bills before the May 31 expiration of the
current highway funding aid expires, that seems unlikely given the
differences in the two bills and the difficult negotiations that will be
needed. It is likely another short-term extension, the seventh, will be
necessary by June 1.

RTP is important to recreational riders because the program provides funding
to build, maintain and improve trails for riders and allows the states to
decide where the monies should be spent and what trails need maintenance
work.

The Senate version of the bill is particularly important to riders because
in addition to the RTP funding, the bill contains a provision specific to
the equestrian community. Under current federal transportation law,
equestrians are not specifically included in the definition of allowable
activities on shared-use transportation paths. Some land managers have used
the absence of this recognition to deny access to equestrians, though that
was not the intent of the federal law. Section 1607 of the Senate-passed
bill specifically adds "equestrians" to the classes of users that may share
such paths for transportation purposes.

The AHC supports the RTP funding levels in the House legislation and the
equine-specific language in the Senate bill.

If you have any questions about this bill, please contact the AHC.

Another message for those interested in preventing horse slaughter and misuse; perhaps you can help encourage adoption of these horses

Last week, Wyeth Organics, the only remaining company that collects pregnant mare's urine (PMU) to manufacture women's hormone replacement therapy drugs such as Premarin, announced that it is downsizing its PMU production and ending contracts with approximately 50 horse ranchers. Thousands of horses, nearly all pregnant mares about to give birth, now face an uncertain future.

This is the second major round of contract cuts to hit the PMU industry after a series of studies revealed that women taking the drugs face greater risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Wyeth claims it will offer financial assistance to ranchers until horses are placed in "productive markets." But "productive markets" means any buyer... and with auction prices reportedly up to 60 cents per pound, the chance that most of these mares and their babies will end up at the slaughterhouse is extremely high. Horsemeat is a delicacy in Europe, bringing in top prices of $16-20 per pound of meat.

In 2003, UAN created PMURescue.org in response to the last major "layoff" of 20,000 pregnant PMU mares. PMURescue.org is an online portal of adoptable PMU horses that works to combine the horse-saving efforts of many individuals and organizations. PMURescue.org now has more than 50 different rescue and placement organizations listing dozens of adoptable PMU horses - more than 200 are listed today. PMURescue.org has already helped to save hundreds of horses - but we need your help if we are to save those whose lives are now threatened by the latest contract cuts.

Below are five things you can do to help:

Write to Wyeth and request that they provide financial assistance only to ranchers who place their horses with adoptive homes or agencies. You can use our sample letter or write your own. Address letters to:

  Mr. Steve Tasher
Senior Vice-President
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
Five Giralda Farms
Madison, New Jersey 07940
Fax: (973) 660-7111

Learn more by clicking on the following links:
UAN Press Release
Brandon Sun article

Order free brochures from PMURescue.org. Distribute these brochures in your community to help potential adopters find available PMU horses, and to let rescue groups know about this free resource for listing their adoptable horses.

Help us encourage NAERIC, the association of equine ranchers, to tell its members that PMURescue.org can help them find homes for their horses. NAERIC is reluctant to promote any resource - no matter how helpful it could be - if it has the word "rescue" associated with it. They need to get off their "high horse" and face the reality that the horses they tout as "high quality" are, in fact, at risk for slaughter and very much in need of rescue. As the organization designed to help PMU ranchers, NAERIC should promote this excellent free resource to ranchers they serve. Address letters to:

  Mr. Norm Luba
Executive Director
NAERIC
P.O. Box 43968
Louisville, Kentucky 40253-0968
Fax: (502) 245-0438

Spread the word about this latest round of cuts. Click this link to forward this message to five of your friends and encourage them to take action now.

Over the past decade, UAN has educated the public about the truth behind PMU drugs and saved hundreds of horses from the slaughterhouse. Having one centralized place for adopters, media and other interested horse advocates to look for PMU horses helps expose the issue tremendously. With your help, we can save even more lives and one day end the drug industry's exploitation of these horses for good.

Thank you for your support,

Karen Brown
Program Director

Dressage Camp with Natalie Hamilton-Hinnemann

June 7, 8 & 9th
(just before the recognized show!)
Huron, SD

Natalie was the assistant trainer for Kathleen Raine & David Whiteman, then
following the 2002 NAYRC, where she was a member of the Silver medal team, she
went to Germany to study with Johann Hinnemann (trainer of German Olympic silver
medallist, Coby van Baalen). She has been back in the states about a year now,
and is back at Bill Solytjes' & Lloyd Landkamp's Brandywine Farm.

Natalie does a lovely job in lessons with students of all levels, and this would
be a nice opportunity to spend 3 days learning from this talented midwest
native!

You can read more of Natalie's bio, and get full details on the dressage camp in
our files section, under Dakota Horse Fest 2005, or contact myself, or Sarah
Patrick at slp4mag@...
