Anne Gribbons to Speak at USDF/USEF Young Rider Graduate Program

Lexington, KY (September 30, 2009) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that FEI dressage judge and rider, Anne Gribbons, will be speaking at the 2010 USDF/USEF Young Rider Graduate Program in West Palm Beach, FL, from January 16-18, 2010. Anne Gribbons has been recently named as the USEF Dressage Chef d’Equipe/Technical Advisor, pending successful contract negotiations. The Young Rider Graduate Program, with funding support from The Dressage Foundation, is designed to help the young rider transition into the world of international competition, teaching, training and equine business management.

During this invaluable weekend seminar many top professionals including former NAJYRC riders, Jennifer Baumert and Todd Flettrich, who are now both successful FEI-Level trainers and riders, will focus on crucial topics such as sponsorship, training opportunities, business management and issues related to the high performance dressage horse.  Participants will also enjoy an evening reception with the 2010 Succeed®/USDF FEI-Level Trainers’ Conference presenter, Henk van Bergen, and may elect to attend the trainers’ conference at the conclusion of the Young Rider Graduate Program.  The age limit for Young Rider Graduate participants has been extended so now USDF members ages 20-28 may apply.  The deadline for applications is October 30, 2009.

Find out more about membership to DressageClinic.com

We are pleased to announce that DressageClinic.com's long time featured educator Charlotte Bredahl will be the USDF's clinician for the upcoming 2009 and 2010 USDF Adult Clinic Series. You can watch one of these exciting upcoming clinics on DressageClinic.com as well as Charlotte's many available training sessions particularly with her
wonderful young horse Westpoint (5 yrs. old) who finished third at the West  Coast Young Horse Finals in May of this year.
USDF will host one clinic in each of the nine regions over the next two years. Clinics will be open to eight riding participants(ages 22 and older) and auditors of all ages. Each rider will receive a 30-45 minute private lesson in a symposium style format. These adult clinics fulfill an important goal of USDF to educate all of the riding
public on the benefits of classical dressage. The adult clinics will appeal to the broadest spectrum of auditors and riders of all levels and ability.
Charlotte Bredahl was a member of the bronze-medal winning 1992 U.S. Olympic Dressage Team and has represented the USA in many international competitions. She resides in California and is breeder, trainer and dressage teacher. She is also a highly respected "S" judge and a new FEI "C" judge. In  this training session with Westpoint, Charlotte works through her  regular training routine.  Charlotte says Westpoint is the best young  horse she has ever started.  Westpoint has been competing at the FEI 5 year old classes and he is already qualified for the CDS  finals at 1st and 2nd level. In the preliminary standings for USDF Horse of the year he is 3rd in the country with a 71.3 median score at  2nd level. He has won the last 16 classes
he has competed in.  Charlotte owns his father Windfall CB and has owned Westpoint since he  was 6 months old.
In Part 1, as Charlotte begins this training session, she explains that she always begins her trot warm up on curved lines, circles, figure 8's, and serpentines as she is constantly trying to improve on suppleness both longitudinally and laterally. She gets her horse to bend on the circles and tries to get him to stretch down as
much as possible.  "On the curves", Charlotte explains, "I ride mostly from my inside leg to the outside rein, so I am always pushing him out a little bit."   It is inspiring to watch this pair as they energetically move forward with  rhythm being a main focus.
In  Part 2 Charlotte begins her canter work as she explains "The more you try to collect him at the canter, the more your leg has to keep telling him to canter, otherwise he will get confused and think you want him to trot. Most horses have a tendency to want to go
haunches in a little bit in the canter so you always have to work on that. You always want to work on straightness." In another section of this part Charlotte explains more about straightness, "rather than trying to move the haunches over, you need to move the shoulder to the
inside a little bit to line him up."
In Part 3, Charlotte and Westpoint begin an exercise in the canter and counter canter. She rides a canter half pass, then canter leg yield back, as she keeps Westpoint balanced and straight. At one point, after the canter work Charlotte breaks into sitting trot, slightly shortens the reins to get him a bit more underneath himself
establishing a confirmed connection as she moves  Westpoint forward and then bringing him back, demonstrating the use of only her seat. Westpoint shows a wonderful willingness to work through all these excercises  particularly the shoulder ins, haunches in and half pass transitions.
In Part 4, Charlotte continues at the sitting trot, doing an alternating half passes, into leg yields exercises. "This really reminds the rider to ride more from the inside leg than the outside leg.  In switching from the half pass to the leg yield, the position stays the same, it's just a difference in leg pressure" Charlotte
explains.
This is an important video to watch especially for those of you who are either interested in the development of youngsters or simply to improve your understanding of the basic fundamentals of being a better more educated rider. Charlotte Bredahl  explains mistakes that
a judge would see and  shows us what is needed to correct these errors. She knows exactly what the judges are looking for and she shares her expert knowledge with us. How fortunate are we to have the privilege to sit ringside and observe this very valuable training session.  We consider this training video vital for the development of every dedicated dressage rider working at any level.

The Dressage world has changed.
American rider Steffen Peters and Ravel are at the center of attention.
New Training Video Now Playing on

How does a rider with his horse continue the training after they become the center of the international dressage  world with victories at the 2009 World Cup and in Aachen Germany as well as top rankings at the Olympics.  The suspense built throughout the night at the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Final in the Thomas &  Mack Arena, and with only one American horse remaining in the competition, the crowd had to wait until the third to last horse in the ring. With $102,000 USD on the line and a Rolex watch, the competition was fierce.
Ravel, in first World Cup Final with Steffen Peters, rose to the occasion in a very difficult Freestyle. His flying changes and piaffe and passage were foot perfect, the movements were incredibly tough and the horse just thrived. He got better as the test went on and was rewarded with a mark of 84.95%. It was plenty for the win.
"It is fair to say, and I think I speak for Ravel too," said Peters. "It was magic soil in there. To share that moment in time with the most amazing dressage fans in the world is an incredible feeling. It hasn't quite sunk in yet."

Owned by Akiko Yamazaki, Ravel, an 11-year-old Dutch gelding, won the Rolex Grand Prix on Friday afternoon, the first time an American has ever won that competition.
"Ravel has an amazing mind," said Peters. "I honestly didn't have to push him. Tonight I could ride him a little more sensitively, he was with me so much. Naturally he's a very, very solid horse. He was extremely confident when we schooled, so I knew he wasn't too bothered by the atmosphere, I can't take credit for his mind he was born like that. I'm one of those really lucky guy who gets to ride a horse like that."
Fourth in the Olympic Games, Ravel has continued to improve and had beautiful piaffe half pass at the end of his test, showing his strength and concentration. The transitions were flawless and the crowd were rewarded for their patience for their hero. He changed his music from the Games, but the basic choreography stayed the same.
"We worked on the timing," said Peters. "We changed the trot music, it had an Asian theme in Hong Kong and I didn't think that would be suitable for Las Vegas. We changed it to Coldplay Vida la Vida."

Dear Everyone,
Thank you so much for your response to the "Mary Wanless Clinic Registration and information" that I sent out recently.

Currently here is what I have still available:  There is one private session remaining open on Saturday November 7; one private session remaining open on Sunday November 8;  one semi-private position and one private session remaining on Monday November 9.  Deadline date for registration is October 20, but we are filling up faster than that.  Please don't email or ask me to "hold" a spot for you; only your registration and your check will reserve the spot!

There is no more overnight stabling available at Pine Meadow Farm (I have received over 8 stall requests on registration forms already received in my mail), but we can arrange stabling nearby if you are from out of town or far away.  There are plenty of day stalls available.

I do have room for those of you that have already sent in your registration and check (by today's mail) and am working on accomodating all of those stabling requests.  I will send that out soon.

There is unlimited room on all three days for auditors and for the workshops at noon.  It is cheaper to pre-register for auditing than to pay at the door.

Attached above is a clinic registration form and an auditor registration form.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

Thanks,

Cathy Belzer

Welcome to e-Tips!

Welcome to the September e-Tips brought to you by My Horse University and eXtension/horse. With the many types of bits available, it is no wonder that bit selection can be very confusing. Selecting the correct bit for a horse is dependent on a number of factors including the horse's level of training and the rider's experience level. Knowing the mechanics of how a bit functions in the horse's mouth can help you choose a bit for your horse. Dr. Holly Spooner from West Virginia University will launch our fall webcasts series with the presentation Bits and Bitting on September 22, 2009 at 7 pm ET. Dr. Spooner will discuss the different actions of bits, how the diameter and shape of the bit affects the bit's intensity, and how to select the correct bit for your horse. Register now to save your spot for the FREE live webcast!

Did you know...?

Bit Selection for Riding and Training Horses

David W. Freeman, Oklahoma State University Extension Equine Specialist
Adapted from eXtension article

Bit and BittingIdentifying differences in bit construction and understanding some of the important principles of bit use will provide an educated basis for selecting bits. The article below explains the different types of bits available so that riders can determine which one is more appropriate for their horses.

Bits are designed for riders to cue a horse by placing pressure in and around a horse's mouth. This pressure is used to control the speed and direction of movement. Bit selection is influenced by a variety of factors, including the style of riding and tradition of bit use, the rider's ability, the level of the horse's training and the intended use of a horse. Read on...

This Month's e-Tips

Remember these tips on proper bit selection and use for your horse:

Bitting is a continual process of training, which through repetitive and step-wise training, teaches horses to accept bits and properly respond to bit pressure.
The goal of the bitting process is to train the horse to respond from as little pressure as possible to perform a given task. As such, cues should employ as small amount of rein pressure as possible.
Bit pressure should be short termed and immediately followed by a release period. If more rein pressure is needed for reinforcement, additional pull-and-release pressure should be applied instead of lengthening the duration of the initial cue.
Inexperienced horses are taught to respond from a direct pull of the reins. Young or inexperienced horses are expected to require frequent reinforcements following the horse's response to an initial cue.
Inexperienced horses should be trained in bits that apply mild intensity and direct pressure instead of bits that intensify pressure or work with leverage.
Curbs are used on horses trained previously to respond to direct and neck rein cues from earlier training with snaffles and/or hackamores.

Question of the Month

The goal of _____________ is to finish the race first and still have your horse finish the final fitness evaluation.

There are several upcoming opportunities in South Dakota that are unique - I
hope you will pass the info along to your GMOs and barns.

First, RPSI is holding two Kuerings (foal inspections) in South Dakota, on
September 19th in Oakaton SD (in the middle of the state), at Solomon Farm, and
on September 21 in Nisland, near Rapid City, at River Vale Farm. These are
unique opportunities to go and hear a German Verband inspector's comments on
many foals and mares. German Stud Book Director Otto Schalter, who inspects and
scores the foals, welcomes questions and discussion, and the farm owners are
very happy to have visitors for the kuerings. The Oakaton site usually has
about 16 to 20 foals, and Nisland usually about 8 to 10. This is a unique
opportunity for you - you could use this to build a resume to eventually apply
to become a DSHB judge (serving on an inspection jury is one of the needed
pre-requisites), or to increase your knowledge as a breeder or buyer of sport
horses. Full details of the inspection tour across the US is on the site,
www.Rhpsi.com

NOTE, RPSI does an entire North America tour, including many sites across our
region, so check the site, as there may be others closer to you :-)

Solomon Farm is holding a clinic in conjunction with their kuering, to be held
on September 20th. The farm's press release reads:
"Have you always wondered how the Inspection judge arrives at his scores? Would
you like to train your eye to evaluate sport prospects and free jumping just
like the judges do? On Sunday, September 20th, 2009, RPSI Studbook Director Otto
Schalter will explain these mysteries and more at the first annual RPSI Judges
Clinic, to be held at Solomon Farm in Okaton, South Dakota. Participants are
encouraged to attend the Inspection the day before (September 19th), as sample
score sheets will be handed out before the Inspection begins. Participants will
fill out their own score sheets for each horse, then have a chance to compare
numbers with the judge the next day. Horses from each age-class will be brought
out for demonstration purposes on Sunday, as well as a free-jumping
demonstration and evaluation. Everyone is welcome to attend. Accommodations are
available in nearby Murdo, South Dakota (18 miles from the farm). A fee of $35
per participant of the clinic will be charged. Please contact Ann Daum Kustar of
Solomon Farm at 605-669-2879, or email info@... for more
information."

The USDF Breeders Championship West Central Series Finals is being held on
Sunday, September 27th in Huron SD - spectators are welcome for both the
qualifiers on Saturday & Sunday and the finals. Show management would
accommodate an experienced scribe who wants to scribe the qualifiers and finals
Saturday and Sunday, as this is another item that many working on a Dressage
Sport Horse Breeding license do want to add to their resume. This is an
excellent chance to come and deepen your understanding of not only the scoring
of in hand horses for DSHB classes... but also learn to show a horse on the
triangle - this method of showing sport horses is used by USDF's in hand shows,
as well as breed shows for sport horse classes, including Arabian Sport horse
classes. The handler's presentation of the horse has a large impact, and there
are GMO members who will be at the show who will happily allow spectators to
shadow them & act as their "guides" and give them showing tips- just contact me
for details.

Just a reminder - the Dressage Foundation's deadline to apply for the Carol Lavell Gifted Scholarships is on Tuesday, September 15th.

These wonderful scholarships help adult amateurs fund an opportunity that is not otherwise possible through a $900 scholarship.

See all the details at:
http://www.dressage foundation. org/Home. htm

The Dressage Foundation (TDF) does have many other programs and funds - if you are not familiar with them, I encourage you to go check out the site. I personally have benefited from not only the Gifted Scholarship, but the GMO I am part of has also received grant funds that allowed our group to hold several major clinics, including the instructor certification program and a freestyle clinic.

And thanks to ALL the folks who support TDF - through the benefit classes at shows, through the book of memory online at TDF, and through other contributions.

Botulism
Dr. Bonnie Barr
Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital

Botulism is a rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that can be fatal to horses.  It is caused by a spore-forming, toxin producing bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum.  The bacteria are wildly distributed in the environment worldwide and can be found in soil, agriculture products and in the intestinal tract of birds and animals.  Several different toxins, which are designated as types A, B, C, D, E, F and G, are produced by this bacterium.  The bacteria can survive in the soil for long periods of time because of its ability to form spores, which are very resistant to heat and cold.  Type A botulism is more common in the western part of the United States whereas Type B botulism is more common throughout the entire United States with the highest concentration northeast of the Mississippi River (such as Kentucky and Pennsylvania).  In the adult horse botulism can occur by ingestion of the toxin in feed material or contaminated forage ("forage poisoning") or wound infections.  In foals the most common cause of botulism is by ingestion of the spores ("Shaker foal syndrome").

The Linda Stephan Hienzsch, the USDF Executive Director, is referring to is Linda Schultz, USDF's Marketing Director.

I thought you would like to see the outreach to and partnership with AQHA, especially focused on on annual meeting and symposium in Texas, where AQHA is also located (makes me happy, as I was the board member who suggested Austin as a potential convention location . . .).  Cindy Vimont deserves credit for persistence in developing the AQHA relationship, dating back to when she was Membership director on USDF staff (she is now second in command of the organization).  I was on the membership committee when it formed some years ago and she was working on developing the relationship with AQHA back then.  It is nice to see it moving forward and I hope it will be a win-win situation for both AQHA members and our existing USDF members.  So far, I have heard stories of members of AQHA joining USDF and members of USDF joining AQHA, so it looks positive so far.  What are your experiences/thoughts?

Cheers,
Sarah

Feeling the Stress
The National Council of Nonprofits is not trying to scare us with its special reports on the impact of the economic crisis on the nonprofit sector, but it does want to share this important information. Although the outlook is not pretty, it is comforting to know that we are all in the same boat. The situation calls for continuous communication between the sectors and is a clear invitation for boards to assess their organizations' health and readiness to face 2010.

BoardSource Leadership Forum

New Session Just Added

Is Board Service Service? (Yes, Say the Millennials, and They Want More of It!)
The millennial generation — 80 million people between the ages of 13 and 33 —- shares with its baby boomer parents and grandparents a zest for community service. But tapping the potential of intergenerational partnerships can be hampered by different definitions and expectations of service and collaboration. How can nonprofit leaders respectfully and effectively engage dedicated individuals from all generations? What generational distinctions influence boardroom dynamics? What intergenerational partnerships really work?

Drawing from America's Civic Health Index, released in September 2009 by the National Conference on Citizenship, this highly participative session explores current attitudes about community service, generation-specific trends and challenges, and how the economic crisis is impacting citizen involvement in local community issues and organizations.

are accepting late entries until full.

The shows feature dressage of all levels, including materiale classes, and
qualifiers for the 2010 Regionasl, in hand classes both days (USDFBC
qualifiers), and the USDF Breeders Championships West Central Series Finals.
Full details are online at www.DakotaDressageAndEventing.org

If you are planning to late enter, please call or text message the secretary,

Huron is only about 110 miles from Sioux Falls, a pleasant/no traffic drive!
Fun show, friendly people, indoor rings with a full fence around the ring, very
friendly for young horses...

There is also a silent auction being held at the show, with donations of new or
gently used items being accepted (non horse related items welcome too); bidding
continues until 1 pm on Sunday. The silent auction proceeds go to support the
myriad of educational and competitive opportunities that Dakota Dressage and
Eventing provides across the Dakotas.

Subject: USDF 2010-2011 Preliminary Budget

Dear Executive Board:  As was promised during the spring board meeting, please find attached a PDF draft of the 2010-2011 Preliminary Budget dated 8/11/2009.  It compares a preliminary forecast for FY 2010-2011 to the current budget.  Recommendations and assumptions are outlined below.  No action other than becoming familiar with the information is required of the EB at this time.  Please feel free to contact us with questions or comments regarding this report.

Thanks, Barb, Stephan and Connie

Based on current tracking indicators we have assumed that inflationary expense increases will be minimal and revenue streams will be relatively stable.  The exception to maintaining current revenue streams is print advertising, which is tracking behind plan and expected to decline further.  It should be noted that we have only completed four months of our current fiscal year and the jury is out on how we will track to plan for the remainder of the year or to programs and events which have not yet taken place; such as the adult or Jr/YR clinics, symposium, convention, trainer’s conference and so on.  Therefore, there is considerable risk to the forecast and adjustments will likely need to be made as more tracking information becomes available.

The 2010-2011 Preliminary Budget shows a ($410,000) budget shortfall. If $162,000 in depreciation expense is treated as an acceptable non cash loss, as is being done in the current budget year, the budget shortfall drops to ($248,558).  It should also be noted that this treatment of depreciation was approved by the BOG for the current budget year only.  The benefit of carrying this practice forward at least one more year, is that we would not need to make hard cost cuts for the sake of what amounts to a paper loss.  The downside of doing so is that it removes what amounts to a cash flow buffer and puts a tighter squeeze on maintaining positive cash flow.  However, it is an acceptable accounting practice.

NO dues or fees increases have been incorporated into the attached version of the Preliminary Budget.

The Membership Ad-hoc Committee recommendation for a new dues/fees structure, if implemented on December 1, 2010, would offset the budget shortfall by $274,508.  This is based on the report that was submitted by the Ad-hoc Membership Committee and reviewed by the Executive Board in July.  A spread sheet of the dues increases proposed, and their financial impact, is attached.

Budget Assumptions:

·        Budget Reserve as mandated in the USDF P&Ps at 2-3% of the total budget, has been included in the Preliminary budget at 3%.  (Is needed as a fallback to adjust for risk factors in the Preliminary Budget)

·        Statue installation expense is paid from capital campaign contributions not operating funds.

·        Staff and contractor head count is maintained at the current level which was reduced by 6 from 2008 to 2009.

·        Depreciation expense of $162,000 is treated as an acceptable non cash loss.

·        Regional Championships Qualifying Fee is allocated to National Championship Investment Fund as was the practice pre FY 2009-2010.

·        Staff average annual pay adjustments is targeted at 3% as of April 1, 2010.  No increase was given in 2009.

·        Staff Christmas bonuses are planned for December 2010. (none were given in 2008 nor budgeted for 2009)

·        A small discretionary amount is allocated for staff promotions and performance bonuses.

·        No further declines in PM, GM, membership and Horse Registration revenue as compared to current forecast are anticipated. (based on tracking to plan as of 7/31)

·        Advertising revenue will decline 10% from current forecast; we are increasingly tracking behind current plan but anticipate leveling off going forward into the following fiscal year.

·        Sponsor revenue will be maintained at the current all time high.  There is considerable risk in this assumption since some big sponsor contracts expire in 2010 and 2011.  Renewal is anticipated but not a given, particularly in today’s economic environment.

·        Go to 10 issues of the printed Connection, but offset with enhanced and timely on line content and features.  The incremental expense of hosting and developing on-line magazine features must be offset by a reduction on print and mailing costs.  The overall Connection related costs remain about the same as before.  Advertising in the August issue is a tough sell and it has been recommended that we combine the August and July issues into one more substantial issue.  This is consistent with what USEF is currently doing with 10 issues annually.  USEA is publishing 6 issues.  Going to 10 issues by dropping the August edition will save about $30,000 in printing and mailing costs that can be redirected at the on-line effort.

·        If the proposal for a new education membership is approved, an investment will need to be made to market it and to further develop the benefits package.  $35,000 is budgeted for marketing.

·        A one time expense will be incurred to leverage the NEC location and the WEG.  Approximately $50,000 is being budgeted for; security, cleaning, supplies, equipment, staff, and member hospitality.

Cathy and her colleagues from Pine Meadow Farm really made the whole Region 4 symposium/silent auction a possibility this past May!  We raised seed funding for the Region 4 Lois Arnold Educational fund through her generousity and the hard work of Jeanne Ahrenholz, Simone van der Schalk, and Lynn Whitely, the demonstration riders, and other helpers!

I know those who attended the symposium with Mary really enjoyed it so wanted to make this new opportunity available again to riders in Region 4 and elsewhere!
