Along the lines of being more transparent, I asked a USDF member if there is a
way for GMO's reviewing bids to find out from USDF if a manager or secretary has
been fined (and if so when & for what....). I was told that currently, one can
just call & ask (or email). While certainly we all understand that sometimes
one winds up with a $50 here or there fine, I do think its important for the GMO
to review this information when selecting a mgr/sec. etc, so I was happy to see
this information is on this bid sheet too. (the staff member was going to ask
IT if there is a way to compile the info easily, and get a formal report on that
info, for say $20... and add this as a future feature).

Also, I hope GMOs note that SLADS is paying $200 to $300 per show weekend for
the lead scorer & volunteer coordinator - - and HATS off to those who do it for
FREE :-) Its important to see as shows expand what is paid for at these larger
shows, and I think helps competitors understand where there show fees all go.

Hello Region 4 USDF Members:

Please share this information widely through your various listserves, newsletters, barns and competitions.  The web-site for all the USDF convention and symposium is up and running and available at http://www.usdf.org/convention/.  I was just looking and could find some inexpensive airfares on American Airlines, Continental, and Southwest, to name a few (and using the USDF promotional codes I got cheaper quotes than Orbitz, Expedia, or Travelocity).  The preliminary agenda (as of July 15) is attached.

Don't forget to nominate deserving USDF members and GMO products for the:

* Youth Convention Scholarship -- http://www.usdf.org/awards/other-awards/youth-convention-scholarship.asp (Due to USDF by August 15)
* Youth Volunteer of the Year -- http://www.usdf.org/awards/service/youth-voy.asp (Due to USDF by August 31)
* GMO Volunteer of the Year (attached and Due to USDF By August 31)
*  Ruth Arvanette GMO Member Scholarship to the USDF convention (attached and due to USDF by August 31)
*  GMO Newsletter award (see categories below) -- www.usdf.org/docs/clubs/gmos/NewsletterAward.pdf (due to USDF by August 31)
*  GMO Web-site award -  www.usdf.org/docs/clubs/gmos/WebSiteAwardNomination.pdf (due to USDF by August 31); available for GMOs in 4 size categories.

Category 1 is those GMOS with < 75 members as of August 31, category 2 = 75-174 members, category 3 = 175-499, category 4 = 500 or more members).  In Region 4 our GMOs currently fall in the following categories.  Category 1 = CDCTA, DDE, EIDEA, GRCHA, HSA, KDEA, ODS, and SDDS; Category 2 = IaDCTA, NDA, NWDA and SLADS; Category 3 = KCDS; and Category 4 = CSDEA.

The symposium with Jan Brink is also looking for rider applications.  I know several Region 4 riders compete in Texas -- why not earn the opportunity of a lifetime to ride in a USDF national symposium?

In addition to discussing the awards and scholarships you wish to nominate people for this year, please add selection of a GMO delegate(s) to your August GMO meeting agendas so people can plan travel ahead of time and get the best deals possible.  Thank you!

Cheers,
Sarah

I know a number of GMOs have been working toward a more transparent selection of paid show functions and thought you might find it helpful to see the St. Louis Area Dressage Society's request for such positions, plus their list of upcoming GMO activities.

The draft form developed for the Columbia Dressage & Combined Training Association is also attached (thanks to Steve Gerdes from NDA for his help!).

Anyone else have suggestions to share?

Release: July 23 2009 (USEF web-site, www.usef.org)

By Dr. A. Kent Allen, DVM

In this day and age, there are many medications available to both human and horses. While some of these medications are quite benign, most of them have varying degrees of side effects. Some of the side effects are relatively minor, while some are rapidly fatal. Recent national events have shown us that we must take great care in what we put in our horses. Obviously, horses can neither tell you where it hurts nor can they tell you what they feel like on a given medication. So, paying attention to what our horses have been diagnosed and medicated with is critical.

The USEF equine drug and medication rule is a rule that has evolved for 30+ years and serves almost 30 breed and discipline organizations. It is, however, a rule that has served us well for a long time, as long as we remember to continually modify it in favor of the horse. The last major modification of the rule was in 1998. The modification involved setting dosage restrictions on all of the medications permitted by the USEF. This was accomplished and has since helped people with correctly medicating their horses. Another proposal that was put forward at the same meeting was not able to be passed at that time. The USEF Veterinary committee put forward a recommendation that the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) be limited to a single medication. This proposal was ahead of it’s time and had neither the research nor the political will to succeed. Since that time the American Quarter Horse Association has adopted a single NSAID rule and has lived with it successfully for many years. It is certainly time to revisit this proposal within the USEF.

NSAID's (Phenylbutazone, Banamine, Equioxx and others) are the most commonly used medications in the athletic horse. These medications provide us with the ability to treat inflamed joints, readily and easily. They are useful in treating colic conditions. They are the single most useful medication in temporarily treating mild inflammatory conditions in the horse. Similar to the NSAID's available for human usage, they are meant to be taken at reasonable doses for a short period of time. Complications of overmedication can occur when they are taken at too high a dose, too long a period of time, or combined with other medications. The complications of overmedication in the horse include gastric ulcers, deterioration of joints and tendons from masking pain and rupture of the intestine. No single NSAID licensed for use in the horse was ever intended to be used in conjunction with another NSAID.

The research of the last 10 years into NSAID use and pain management has taught us much. We are now aware of the very real danger of masking significant injury in our performance horses with more than one NSAID drug. We are aware that "stacking" NSAID use in some circumstances is similar to doubling the dose. We are aware in the stressed horse even normal doses can cause significant side effects. We are aware of how common gastrointestinal side effects (gastric ulcers, colic, intestinal perforation) are with a single nonsteroidal at elevated doses. We are aware that it is difficult to predict the effect on the horse in combining two non-steroidal drugs. In some cases the drugs are no more effective than a single drug, in other cases they were more powerful than two drugs taken separately and in some cases they mask pain more effectively than very potent morphine-like drugs. We are aware that there will always be a need for more research into this area but on this particular topic the answer seems to be clear.

The question has been raised that if we limit treatment to a single non-steroidal drug will that increase the amount of joint injections being put into our horses? First, it is important to understand that a joint injection properly performed in experienced veterinary hands is the single most effective anti-inflammatory treatment we have for a equine joint. Secondly, there are numerous medications to inject into joints. Often it is hyaluronic acid in combination with a variety of cortisones, or autologously derived (from the horse’s own blood) therapies such as IRAP. Some of these medications are extremely safe and all of them will significantly reduce joint inflammation. On the question of “are joint injections going to be overused,” the answer is that is already happening today. In some cases, joint injections are being used as treatments in four, six or eight joints without a diagnosis of joint inflammation ever being established. This is dangerous not only from the standpoint of increasing the number of joint injections in the horse and potential side effects but you may or may not be treating the real problem. Accurate diagnosis, including lameness examination, nerve blocks, joint blocks and diagnostic imaging is the most effective method of determining what the problem is and if the horse needs joint injections. This also has the benefit of reducing the cost to owners as well as the risk to the horse.

A similar question has been raised, will we increase the amount of illicit drugs being administered to our horses by limiting legal treatment to a single non-steroidal drug. The vast majority of horse owners and USEF members would never consider this option. A very small minority of people will attempt this option if they think they can get away with it. The real answer is that this small minority will attempt to cheat, no matter what the legal drug rule is. The best defense against these individuals is to have a highly effective drug medication research laboratory. The USEF Drug and Research Laboratory is one of the most effective equine drug detection laboratories in the world. It is one of five FEI equine reference laboratories in the world. The USEF Equine and Drug and Medication Program spends hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to stay ahead of illicit drug usage. The program tests up to 17,000 samples a year collected on a random basis and will eventually catch someone using illicit drugs.

So the answer to the question of how do we reduce the amount of overmedication and under diagnosis in our horses, is simple. We revisit the USEF medication rule. We make it simpler for our members to understand and implement. We make it safer for our equine friends because they are counting on us to do the right thing.

Quote: Absent a diagnosis, medicine is poison, surgery is trauma, and alternative therapy is witchcraft.

Canada Tops the U.S. Competition in Junior Team Dressage at NAJYRC

Release: July 23 2009

The rain that plagued the Kentucky Horse Park yesterday was nowhere to be found as the Juniors took to the dressage arena today for their first rides of the competition. Today’s rides would decide the Team medals, and all the riders arrived in top form.

Taking home the Team Gold medal was the Ontario, Canada, team. The team, made up of Maura O’Sullivan and Pik Czar, Zachary Ball and Karajan, Megan Lane and Caravella, and Alexandra Dvorak and Fling, finished with a total of 196.433. Team Ontario had three riders finish in the top 10, with two of them in the top three individually.

“We really worked as a team and I think that helped to bring it all together,” said Lane.

The Canadian team took several mintutes to thank all their sponsors, their families, and everyone associated with running the NAJYRC

“It’s just been a great experience to show here,” said O’Sullivan. “Everybody’s been extremely helpful and nice.”

“The whole facility is amazing,” Dvorak added.

The Team Silver medal went to Region 3 from the USA. Ellen Wall and Tvauri, Katrin Dagge and Dream of Love, Jessica Deimler and Ragtime V, and Lauren Knopp and Rho Dance combined scores gave them a total of 190.594. The Silver-medal team also had three riders finish in the top 10.

“It’s truly the Junior Olympics,” Deimler said. “We all feel so blessed to be here and to have this opportunity at such a young age. It’s such a wonderful program to be a part of.”

“It’s great for us to be here as a team,” Wall said. “We were thinking that we were going to be the team and it’s great that we’re here together. We get along so well. We knew each other before the team and we work so well together.”

Finally, the Bronze-medal team was the USA Region 1: Melanie Montagano and Ga Deva, Alison Coyle and Bariton, Kaitlin Blythe and Daverden, and Nicole DelGiorno and Lamborghini Dane. Their total score was 189.026.

“There’s really nothing like this competition,” DelGiorno said. “Outside of dressage there are so many disciplines here. It’s the estuary for the future for all equestrian sports. It’s amazing to be around that talent and see so many beautiful horses. It’s great to be able to sit down and watch one great horse and rider after another.

Standing first individually is Young Riders’ rookie Megan Lane from Ontario, Canada, and her lovely mare Caravella. The pair turned in a score of 67.189%. Lane and Caravella turned in a strong test with flashy movements to impress the judges enough to catapult them into the lead.

“It feels great!” Lane said after her test. “The test was great. She was really, really good. She was a little bit nervous in the warm up, but she really pulled herself together. We’ve only been partners for about four months, so I think this far we’ve done pretty well together.”

Sitting in second place individually is the stunning Danish Warmblood gelding Lamborghini Dane and Nicole DelGiorno. The pair, from Region 1, is sitting right behind Lane and Caravella with a score of 66.486%.

“I was really happy with my ride,” she said. “Every once in a while he gets a little lazy, but it was nice to be able to take my leg off and have him be nice and springy. We didn’t know if this season was going to be possible because I didn’t have a horse as of two years ago, and he had an almost career-ending injury. Through careful rehabilitation and training he’s been able to come back and do quite well.”

DelGiorno added that the exciting atmosphere in the main arena at the Kentucky Horse Park suited her horse perfectly.

“He actually does great at shows. He like all the attention, the flags, and the more people clapping, the better!”

Finally, rounding out the top three is Canada’s Maura O’Sullivan and Pik Czar. The judges awarded the pair a score of 65.586% for their steady and flashy test. This is O’Sullivan’s first time at Young Riders, and she is thrilled with her and her horse’s performance this week.

“It was fantastic!” O’Sullivan said. “He was such a good boy and I couldn’t be more proud of him. I really didn’t know what to expect going into it. This is really my first big competition. I just did my first CDI about three weeks ago. I’m really glad we’ve turned out to be a competitive pair.”

Pik Czar, a 13-year-old Hanoverian, has been with O’Sullivan for three years.

“He’s a real character,” she said. “He’s very friendly, he loves people, he loves food…he’s a big ham!”

Team results are:
Gold medal --  Region 7
Silver medal --  Region 2
Bronze medal -- Region 3

The 2009 Adequan FEI North American Junior & Young Riders Championships (NAJYRC) presented by Gotham North kicked off today under a deluge from the sky at the Kentucky Horse Park. Despite the fact that rain showers, and eventually a downpour, plagued the first day of competition, some stunning rides in the Team Dressage Test and the first medal ceremony of the championships brightened the day for riders and spectators alike.

It was an exciting test from start to finish, as just over four points separated the Gold-medal team from the Bronze-medal team.

Region 7 took home the first Gold medal of the competition. The team, consisting of Brian Hafner and Lombardo LHF, Amanda Harlan and Liberté, Christine Stephenson and Markant and Brianna Dutton and Tibet, finished with a team total of 198.631. All four riders put in solid tests. More importantly, they all appreciate their team members and how well they have gotten along on the journey to the NAJYRC.

“I got really lucky today,” Hafner said. “My horse was really solid. We had a few minor faults. It is a huge deal for me to be part of this group and do so well as a team.”

Harlan agreed with Hafner, and got the added privilege of experiencing the rain firsthand.

“I was very happy with my ride today. I rode in the pouring rain for the first time!” she said. “I’m so happy to be here. It’s been an amazing journey.”

Dutton and Stephenson finished with solid scores, but both were thrilled with their team’s efforts and with receiving the Gold medal.

“There were a few more mistakes than usual,” Dutton said. “But, it was nice to ride and get out there. My team is really awesome.”

“I didn’t have the greatest ride today,” Stephenson admitted, but added, “I have the best teammates anyone could ever have. It was just awesome being there and being able to compete.”

The Silver-medal team from Region 2 was made up of Ashlee Todosijevic and Sjoerd, Brittany McCarthy and Gabelle, Kristen N. Becker and Ramses and Kassandra Barteau and GP Raymeister. Region 2 had two riders finish in the top three individually, and had a combined score of 197.315.

The Bronze medal went to Region 3 with a combined score of 194.579. The Region 3 team included Mary-Cameron Rollins on Rose Nior 2, Caroline Roffman on Accent Aigu FRH, Amanda Sterns on Revanche and McKenzie Jenkins on Tsarina Bint RII.

Topping the leader board individually after the first round of dressage was Brian Hafner aboard the Hanoverian Lombardo LHF. Hafner, hailing from Region 7, received an average of 68.842% from the five judges. Lombardo has been with Hafner since he was a four-year-old.

“My horse was really solid today,” he said. “We had a few minor faults. But I am very fortunate to have a great horse. He’s so amazing. He has a great personality, and I am very blessed to have him.”

Hafner goes go school in San Diego and trains with Laurie Falvo Doyle.

Kristen N. Becker and Ramses, a flashy KWPN from Region 2, turned in a 67.789% to put themselves in second place. Ramses impressed the judges with his flashy gaits and smooth, solid movements to earn a Team Silver medal, as well as put himself and Becker in a solid position for the rest of the competition.

Rounding out the top three is Kassandra Barteau and her GP Raymeister, also from Region 2, with their score of 67.579%. This isn’t the first trip to this competition for Barteau, but it is the first trip to the championships for her partner. Thus far, Barteau is pleased with Raymeister’s performance.

“He was such a good boy!” she said. “I just took it nice and slow, and I didn’t push him. I thought he was really steady. He can get a little flighty, and he didn’t see the [judges’] tents yesterday. But, I was really proud of how he handled that.”

Raymeister, a nine-year-old Holsteiner stallion by Rantares, has been with Barteau since he was just starting out under saddle.

“We’ve been together for four years now,” she said proudly. “I’ve had him since he was doing training and first, and he’s just working his way up to the FEI levels, figuring it all out.”

Wednesday also featured horse inspections for the jumping horses, the eventers and the refiners, as well as the Opening Ceremonies which took place after the dressage had concluded. The big event was a packed and exciting march of the many groups that are onsite and participating in the week-long activities.

First was the procession of participating athletes from across North America that walked into the covered arena through ceremonious black curtains. Dressage, jumping, eventing, reining, vaulting and endurance were represented, followed by the officials.

Many dignitaries were present to show their support, including USEF President David O'Connor, Kentucky Horse Park Director John Nicholson and the President of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein.

After the presentation of the FEI, Mexican and Canadian flags and anthems, it was time for the American flag and anthem to be presented. This was followed by the Lafayette Color Guard and students who performed the Linda Eder song "Gold."

The dignitaries returned to share their thoughts and encourage the athletes who traveled so far and worked so hard to earn a spot at these amazing championships.

Thursday at the NAJYRC will be packed with events staring at 7:30 a.m. and wrapping up long after sundown. Junior Team dressage will compete, as well as Junior and Young Rider show jumping, CCI** eventing dressage and reining.

Nancy called me this morning with a quick update. Hans had a tough time this
morning as our first rider out. Krissy pulled in a 61.211 (prelim) and Brianna
and Emily were yet to go (Emily is the last rider of the day . . .). There was
some rain falling as Nancy and I spoke to each other. She said the team spirits
are good. Our one junior rider rides at 7:38 am tomorrow (2nd rider of the
day). Brian Hafner, who grew up in Region 4, was the top rider of the day as we
spoke (68.842 prelim).

I will keep you posted as I learn more.

Rebecca Blake and Emma Leestma Crowned Gold Medalists at the 2009 USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals Presented by Dressage Today®

Release: July 21 2009

By Jennifer Keeler & Jenny Van Wieren

Lexington, KY— The 2009 United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Dressage Seat Medal Finals presented by Dressage Today® concluded this weekend, July 17-19, in the beautiful setting of the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL. Riders came from across the country to compete for the championship in two age divisions—13 & under and 14-18.

The purpose of the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Program is to promote and reward excellence in equitation, including correct seat, position, and use of aids in the sport of dressage. Junior riders in these finals qualified last year by competing in the Dressage Seat Medal Semi-Final classes held at each of the 2008 USDF Regional Championships, with the top competitors in each age division being eligible for the finals.

This year’s judging panel of Lois Yukins, Paula Lacy, and Charlotte Trentelman were given the difficult task of testing the riders and their skills, with each age division rising to the occasion and making the judges’ jobs even harder.

In the 13 & Under division, Rebecca Blake of Enumclaw, WA, topped the class of 10 riders with a score of 90.000% to take the Gold medal riding borrowed mount Socrates, owned by Kelly Kavanav. Traveling all the way from Region 6 paid off, as Blake flew home with the Hart Trophy, a new Wintec 500 saddle and Kieffer snaffle bridle.

Winning the Silver medal was fellow West Coast rider Heather Anne Baine of Alamo, CA, with a score of 85.000%. Twelve-year-old Baine was also riding a borrowed horse, Lancieux, owned by Jean Cook. Schenck qualified for the Finals in Region 7 and was awarded a silver trophy, Kieffer bridle, and Ariat garment and boot bags.

In third place with a score of 84.00% was Bobbie Kerr of East Aurora, NY, representing Region 8 and riding her own horse, Hooksiel. Along with the Bronze medal, Kerr also took home a silver trophy, engraved dressage halter and lead, and an Ariat helmet bag.

With a total of 16 riders in the 14-18 age division, the riders made choosing a winner very difficult, necessitating an additional ride-off to determine the medal placings. When the dust settled, the championship title went to Region 2’s Emma Leestma of Grand Rapids, MI, riding her partner for the past three years, Polensio (owned by Tamsyn Sweetman), to a score of 88.000%. After placing fourth in the nation at the 2008 Finals, 16-year-old Leestma was ready to tackle this year’s Finals, claiming the Gold medal, Hart Trophy, Wintec 500 dressage saddle, and Kieffer snaffle bridle.

At only 14 years old, Leah Myers faced older competition in her division, but rose to the challenge and earned the Silver medal with a score of 87.000%. Traveling from Carmel, CA (Region 7), Myers rode Ginna Frantz’s Bella Luna GP and took home a silver trophy, Kieffer bridle, and Ariat garment and boot bags.

The Bronze medal went to Region 4’s Kristina Wang riding borrowed mount Wellington, owned by Kristin Allen, to a score of 86.000%. A veteran of USEF National Championship competition, Wang was awarded a silver trophy, engraved dressage halter and lead, and an Ariat helmet bag as part of her third-place finish.

A unique aspect of this dressage program is that riders are allowed to compete on borrowed horses. While several riders contested the Finals on horses they own and train themselves, the overwhelming majority of finalists chose to borrow a mount with which they had only been paired for a matter of days prior to the competition; in fact, this year four out of six of the Finals medalists were awarded their titles on a horse they had not met until arriving at Lamplight. USEF would like to thank all horse owners for their generosity in loaning mounts for these Finals, and also to Yvonne Barteau and KYB Dressage for coordinating all arrangements for riders from around the nation to be able to be paired with a local horse to compete.

Attached please find the competition and other events schedule for NAJYRC this week. The GMO Challenge to help support the costs of going to NAJYRC initiated by the Kansas City Dressage Society is still looking for some challengers to help with the costs of entries and stabling.  Please send donations to the 'USDF Region 4 FEI Jr/YR account' at the USDF office.  This account is used soley for our NAJYRC team functioning each year and really needs some help!

I will be posting news from our team as I receive it, plus would be happy to share any well wishes you have with the team members as they pursue this journey.  As a reminder, Nancy Gorton (MO) is our capable and experienced Chef d'Equipe and our team riders and their horses in 2009 are:

USDF Region 4 Junior Team: Amy Hacker (MO) and Discoverer.

USDF Region 4 Young Rider Team:  Emily Wagner (KS) and Brigadier, Brianna Zwilling (MN) and DiMaggio, Kristina Wang (NE) and Belladiva, Hans Baertsch (MN) and Rubinstar GB.

This is Brianna's first time on a Region 4 NAJYRC team, so let's welcome her to the team!  Amy, Emily, Krissy, and Hans have all competed at least one year at NAJYRC and will bring that seasoning with them to the competition.  Emily has qualified an impressive number of horses (n = 4) over her years at NAJYRC!  We have an incredible group of horses and riders and support (emotional and financial) from their home region is always much appreciated.

A total of 55 juniors and young riders will represent each of USDF's nine regions.  The NAJYRC is an exciting competition with a format similar to the Olympics, with teams of riders invited from the United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and Bermuda competing in dressage, eventing, show jumping and reining.

Many of North America’s best equestrians got their start at the NAJYRC including Olympic medalists Greg Best, Karen O'Connor, Chris Kappler and McLain Ward.

The NAJYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. A dressage championship was added in 1981, and show jumping was added in 1982. The first complete Young Riders championship was held in British Columbia, Canada in 1982. The Championships were expanded to officially include a championship division for juniors in 2006. The discipline of reining was added to the official schedule in 2008.  For a history of Region 4 NAJYRC teams (web-site still in progress) please contact Heidi Basler at heidi@...

Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, and admission is free of charge (there is a nominal parking fee for the Kentucky Horse Park). For more information, visit www.

Cheers,
Sarah

Subject: The clubs section of our site is incorrectly reported as an attack site

Hello, everyone,

I thought I would bring this to everybody’s attention, due to the chance that some of you may hear from members about it.

Yesterday afternoon Rob discovered that a certain section of our site, our clubs section, was being blocked in firefox and Safari and reported as an attack site by google.

I want to assure everyone that this is not the case.  Nothing dangerous is on our site.

The three of us, myself, Rob, and Bart, began picking apart the code on our site.  We discovered that last Thursday, there was an error when the database that the server uses was copied from our database server to the web server.  This resulted in corruption of some of the information in a certain table that the clubs section of our site uses, and google’s malware search flagged it as potentially dangerous.

This problem was taken care of when the server copied the data the following night, as the process erases the copy on the web server and replaces it with a copy from the database server.  Unfortunately for us, Google did a routine scan on our site on Friday, which is why that particular section of the site is now flagged as dangerous.

I am having google’s security team review the site, and I’m certain they will find it to be clean.  This process usually takes 24 hours, but it may take a bit longer than that for the report to propagate throughout the internet.  In the meantime, users of certain browsers (Firefox 3.5, Safari, and Chrome) will see this warning message when they visit the clubs section of our site.  There is nothing we can do about that, it will just have to go away on its own.

Fortunately, the vast majority of our users use Internet Explorer, which doesn’t report these types of things (Microsoft and Google aren’t on the best of terms, so IE ignores google’s warnings).  To those users, there will be no warning of any kind.

If any of you are contacted by members regarding this, please relay this information.

It's not every day we get a new Eventing venue so we're making an exception to the "no advertising" rule as Feather Creek's so new they didn't make the Omnibus.

My apologies to the dressage riders but FC will be hosting shows for you as well in the future.

USEF to Launch Redesigned Website
By Helen Murray

On Monday, July 20, 2009, the USEF will launch its newly redesigned website - usef.org. The completely revamped site will feature many useful upgrades including improved navigation and accessibility with tailored menus and fly-outs allowing site users to access nearly any USEF form, news piece, or rule through a single click. In addition, visual upgrades including videos, collages and the latest photos have been added to allow viewers to follow their favorite equestrian athletes. Other exciting additions include a streaming competition calendar, expanded news coverage, and announcements about upcoming events providing up-to-the-minute information about what is happening in equestrian sport both stateside and abroad.

Please be aware that throughout the morning of July 20th, while the switch over is occurring and until approximately Noon, EDT, the website might experience intermittent down time. We apologize for any inconvenience you might experience during this time, but we will do our very best to keep interruption of service to a minimum. Should you experience any difficulties accessing the site during the change-over, have any questions, or wish to share any comments, please contact the USEF Customer Care Center at customercare@... or 859-258-2472.

Thank you.

The vision of the United States Equestrian Federation® is to provide leadership for equestrian sport in the United States of America by promoting the pursuit of excellence from the grassroots to the Olympic Games, based on a foundation of fair, safe competition and the welfare of its human and equine athletes.

Preparation for Performance
By Dr. Hannah Wellman
Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital

Planning for a show can be stressful. Riders and trainers are busy with class scheduling, equipment is being loaded and organized, and performance and training is being fine tuned. In all of these activities it can be easy to forget a few key steps that will make your show time much more efficient, cost-effective and successful.

Approximately one month before a show it is important to make sure that your horse has a current Coggins test that is valid for your entire show time and your trip home. The Coggins test is used to test for Equine Infectious Anemia and it is required to be done yearly.  It is also essential that your horse is current on vaccinations. For FEI competition there are specific restrictions relating to this. With this information, in combination with a physical examination, your veterinarian is able to provide you with a health certificate for travel.

In the weeks leading up to a show, as training intensifies, it may be useful to have a veterinarian examine the horse for any signs of developing lameness or pain. This will allow any issues to be treated and monitored before shipping. It also a good idea to have the farrier come and ensure the feet and any shoes are in good condition. Try to avoid timing a reset or trim just before a show or during competition.

Dear GMO members in Region 4,

Is this the year that you will be able to step up and help out your GMO by representing the members in your group at the USDF Convention in Austin, TX, December 2-4? The convention is the single best way to influence how USDF does business and the direction the organization is taking, plus it is packed with educational opportunities, chances to network with dressage enthusiasts around the country, and celebrate dressage successes in the past year (maybe your own awards or celebrating that a US rider won the World Cup and Aachen).  With the World Equestrian Games to take place in the US in 2010, I think this convention should be gearing up for a big US splash on that scene!

Adult group members, please remember: you can apply for a Ruth Arvanette Award to help with the costs of travel -- http://www.usdf.org/docs/clubs/gmos/RAGrantApplication.pdf.

Youth (USDF members < 21 years of age) -- convention scholarship applications are also being solicited from you  --

The organization is always better with member input.  Many GMOs give scholarships to a member to attend as delegate (sometimes this information is even written into the bylaws of your club).  In additions to national grants/scholarships, additional suggestions we have heard from members are:

*  sometimes a business (or business traveler) will donate airline miles or hotel nights for non-profit use.  Maybe this could cover your GMO delegate airline ticket or reduce the hotel bill?
*  share a room with a friend (or another GMO delegate from Region 4) to save on costs and have more fun,
*  plan ahead to lock in the best prices,
*  hold a Delegate party with your GMO at a restaurant that donates a certain percentage of the meal costs back to the non-profit,
*  look for volunteer opportunities in the convention planning materials (not yet out . . .). Sometimes registration costs are reduced for USDF members willing to put in some volunteer time during the convention.

Any other ideas or suggestions you have?

Please check the lists below frequently to find out if your GMO is covered and discuss this in your GMO meetings.

Thanks for your help!

Good morning,

Two pages have been set-up on the USDF Web site regarding GMO delegate/proxy appointments. The pages below list those GMOs that have appointed representation, their region number, and the USDF member that has been appointed as the delegate or proxy. In addition, those GMOs that have assigned their proxy to the USDF Secretary are also listed.

http://www.usdf.org/about/about-usdf/governance/nominating/GMOBOGDelegates.asp - GMOs with appointed representation

The second page lists those GMOs by name and region number that have NOT appointed representation.

http://www.usdf.org/about/about-usdf/governance/nominating/GMOBOGWODelegates.asp - GMOs WITHOUT representation

This information will be updated in the USDF office regularly as GMO Delegate Authorization forms are received. Please keep the above information handy to keep tabs on the GMOs in your region and if they have or have not appointed a delegate/proxy.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

We hope you find this tool useful!

The Unwanted Horse Coalition Releases National Survey Results

The findings from the Unwanted Horse Coalition’s Study on Contributing Factors Surrounding the Unwanted Horse Issue are now available on the UHC website at www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org. The study is the first of its kind to assess the causes and magnitude of the unwanted horse population in the United States .

Results indicate that the problem of unwanted horses is perceived to be growing on many fronts. More than 90% of participants believe the number of unwanted horses, as well as those neglected and abused, is increasing. Almost all participants (87%) indicate that in the past year, the issue of unwanted horses has become “a big problem,” compared with only 22% who said the problem was important three years ago. Respondents also report that the number of horses being euthanized is increasing.

In light of one of the worst economic downturns in U.S. history, the economy is considered to be a significant contributor to the unwanted horse problem. The closing of the nation’s processing facilities, changes in breed demand/indiscriminate breeding, as well as the high costs of euthanasia and carcass disposal are also cited by respondents as major contributors.

Regarding placement options for unwanted horses, 63% of equine rescue/retirement facilities polled report they are at near or full capacity and, on average, turn away 38% of the horses brought to them. Capacity is clearly the issue in that as many horses stay for life at the facilities as are adopted out.

Survey respondents believe the top solutions for solving the problem of unwanted horses are to educate owners to purchase and own responsibly, increase the ability of private rescue and retirement facilities to care for unwanted horses, reopen the U.S. processing plants, and increase options and resources for euthanizing and disposing of unwanted horses.

The survey was conducted from November 2008 to January 2009 by an independent market research company.  More than 23,000 horse owners, equine industry stakeholders and non-horse owners participated.  For additional information, please contact UHC Director, Julia Andersen, jandersen@... or (202) 296-4031.

Piroplasmosis Horses Remain Missing, Canada Adds Equine Import Requirements

June 30 2009, Article # 14458

The two horses removed from piroplasmosis quarantine in Missouri on June 17 had not been located as of June 30, said Tim Cordes, DVM, senior USDA staff veterinarian for Equine Programs and national coordinator for Equine Diseases. Multiple agencies, including the USDA, Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are involved in the search.

The two horses tested positive for equine piroplasmosis after another horse stabled at the Raytown Equestrian Park was hospitalized and confirmed positive for the disease, setting off a foreign animal disease investigation.

The stable, home to 64 equids, was quarantined June 6, and equine piroplasmosis (caused by Theileria equi) was confirmed in the affected horse June 10. Five positive horses were euthanized June 18 with their owners' consent.

Whoever took the positive horses removed locks on the stable and stall doors to access the animals, according to a statement released by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

Misti Preston, public information administrator with the Missouri Department of Agriculture, described the horses as bay Quarter Horse geldings. One had a star and one had a blaze. The horses are microchipped. No other information was available.

Equine piroplasmosis is an infectious disease that can be caused by two different protozoal parasites that attack the red blood cells (the one causing the current outbreak is Theileria equi). It is characterized by fever, anemia, weight loss, jaundice, and, in some cases, death. The case fatality rate can be up to 20% in naive horses. The only treatment is a potent type of chemotherapy that can have serious side effects in some horses.

The disease is spread by ticks, the use of contaminated needles, and possibly through blood-contaminated semen of infected stallions. Infected ticks pass the parasite while feeding. Read more about piroplasmosis.

Equine Canada reported the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on June 22 asked the USDA to suspend the issuance or endorsement of export certificates for horses and other equines coming from Missouri.

The USDA has also been asked to certify horses and other equines entering Canada from other states with the statement: "During the previous twenty-one (21) days, the animal(s) in this shipment has/have not been in the State of Missouri."

The Canadian Border Services Agency will ask all those transporting horses into Canada the following questions:

1. Do the horses originate from the state of Missouri or have they been in that state within the past 21 days?

2. Have the horses transited the state of Missouri en route to Canada?

If the horses originate or have been in the state of Missouri within the past 21 days, or have transited through it, they will be referred to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. That organization will determine, based on document verification and inspection, whether the horses should be allowed to enter Canada.

Equine Canada strongly recommended that horse owners who wish to bring their animals to Canada avoid traveling to, or transiting through, Missouri with their horses. Horse owners who still want to export their horses to Missouri cannot bring them back to Canada on the original Canadian export certificate. Instead, they will need to move their horses to a non-affected state for at least 21 days prior to returning to Canada.

Current import requirements for horses entering Canada can be found using the CFIA Automated Import Reference System at airs-sari.inspection.gc.ca. To determine import requirements for each horse, specific parameters that refer to each horse's individual circumstances need to be entered to create a customized import requirement list.
