Horses React to Human Heart Rates, Study Finds

July 01 2009, Article # 14464
An increase in a human's heart rate affects the heart rate of the horse they are leading or riding, researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences recently reported.

Linda Keeling, PhD, and colleagues tested horses and riders to see if humans inadvertently communicate fear and anxiety to horses. Using heart rate as a fear indicator, the researchers asked 20 people with varying levels of horse experience to walk and ride 10 horses from Point A to Point B four times. The researchers told participants an umbrella would open as they rode or led the horse on the fourth pass. The umbrella never opened, but heart rates in both horses and humans increased during the fourth trip between the points, when the human expected the umbrella to open.

"The increase in the horses' heart rates probably means that they are more alert and prepared to react to any potential danger," Keeling said. "In the wild, horses are adapted to respond to other animals in their group. A startle reaction is more likely when the horse is very alert."

If you are a nervous person leading or riding a horse, your nervousness might increase the likelihood of the "spook" that you are anxious to avoid.

The study, "Investigating horse-human interactions: the effect of a nervous human," was published in the July 2009 issue of The Veterinary Journal. The abstract is available on PubMed.

The American Horse Council’s “Welfare of the Horse” Forum

is Now Available on Horse TV’s H-SPAN

On Tuesday June 16, 2009 the American Horse Council held “The Welfare of the Horse” forum in Washington , DC .  The Forum, sponsored by Luitpold, was held as part of the AHC’s National Issues Forum and featured speakers from segments of the horse community as varied as competition, sport, work and entertainment. Speakers and panelists discussed the many welfare and safety initiatives that various segments of the horse industry have in place or are instituting.

The Welfare of the Horse forum created an opportunity for the industry to provide reports on the welfare and safety initiatives already in place and those that are being undertaken.  It also lets the fans, the general public, the media, and elected officials know how important this is to the horse community.

The forum is available for on-demand viewing on http://www.horsetv.com/hspan_ahc1.htm.  H-SPAN is a digital channel providing coverage of industry symposiums, meetings, educational presentations and more on its equestrian television portal, HorseTV.com.  It is a continuing service provided by HorseTV for the benefit of the international horse community, and its mission is to inform, educate, empower and unite the industry worldwide.

Dr. Scott Palmer, a nationally-know veterinarian and past-president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, delivered the keynote address. Other featured speakers included Gary Carpenter, executive director of the American Quarter Horse Foundation, Cindy Schonholtz, president of the Animal Welfare Council, Dr. Tom Lenz, chairman of the Unwanted Horse Coalition and Dr. Gail Golab, Director, Animal Welfare Division of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The forum also included panels on racing, showing, sport, and work.  The panels included representatives from racing, showing, eventing, hunter-jumpers, endurance riding, rodeo, carriage operators, polo, sales/auctions, entertainment and research.  Representatives from national organizations involved in all these activities provided an update on their welfare activities.  This was the most inclusive presentation on safety and welfare ever assembled in terms of its breadth and the activities and organizations involved.

The forum can be viewed by visiting HorseTV.com and clicking on the H-SPAN icon.

Please Join Us for an Education Clinic with
Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel
Hosted by Stoney Meadow Farms, Bonner Springs KS

August 13 – 16, 2009

Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel is the dressage trainer at First Choice Farm in
Woodbine, Maryland. In 2004, she won the BLM Championships at Fourth Level on
Roulette, a 1996 Oldenburg. In 2006, they won the BLM finals at PSG and Reserve
Champion at Intermediare I. Felicitas currently shows Roulette at Grand Prix --
they debuted in April 2007 with a score of 70%. This combination has been
well-placed in Olympic Qualifying competitions as well as World Cup Qualifier
competitions. Much more is expected from Roulette and Felicitas in the coming
years.

She is an effective and articulate clinician, whose style is sympathetic to the
horse. Her strength lies in “making the horse more beautiful, and allowing
them to express themselves.” She is sympathetic to the horse and each is
trained according to his individual needs and temperament following classical
dressage principles. Felicitas patiently encourages the horse to stretch into a
soft hand, lift his back and carry his own neck “as if peering over the edge
of a cliff”. She bases her work on classical methods as exemplified by the
best of the European tradition. Typically participants and auditors alike
benefit immensely from the creative and subtle strategies Felicitas shares with
them. All leave with a better understanding of how to enhance the flow of their
horse's energy from back to front, and front to back again. The skills of
Felicitas as a clinician will soon be available on-line from
“dressageclinic.com.”

Along with Gerhard Politz, Michael Poulin, Debbie Bowman and Steffen Peters, she
has been a USDF Examiner for the Instructor’s Certification program. In her
native country of Germany, Felicitas placed first in class when completing her
"Reitlehrer" (federally certified instructor) certification. She also graduated
with the highest score ever awarded since the program was upgraded by the German
government in 1982.

In addition to her training and clinic activities Felicitas maintains a vigorous
working student program. Prominent competitors such as Teresa Butta and Brendan
Curtis (from the Robert Dover TV reality show) in addition to Marjorie Davis
have been trained through this program.

Felicitas was also the featured article in DRESSAGE TODAY: FEBRUARY 2007 with
How to Develop Power with Hill Work - improving collection and self-carriage by
venturing outdoors and Dressage Today: February 2008 with From shoulder-in to
pirouettes - the benefits of hillside exercises.

This 4 day clinic is a unique opportunity to work with Felicitas in this

The Weather Wins the War at the 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions; Five New National Champions Crowned

Release: June 21 2009

By Joanie Morris

Gladstone, NJ – After a four day battle, the rain finally won at the 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions, and collectively the Ground Jury and the management decided that, in the best interest of the horses, the competition was suspended after the Young Riders rode first thing Sunday morning.

This meant that Leslie Morse was crowned USEF National Grand Prix Champion for the fifth time. Morse and her beloved 15-year-old Swedish Warmblood stallion Tip Top 962 put on a dominating performance in the Grand Prix on Friday on a score of 72.00% to win the first leg. The pair tried out a new Freestyle on Saturday and scored 74.250% for second place. The Grand Prix Championship was scheduled to be decided today with the Grand Prix Special, but Mother Nature had other plans.

“It feels great to be National Champion,” said Morse who traveled from Beverly Hills, CA to compete in Gladstone. “Tip Top did a fabulous job. I’m very excited. I leave here and go to England to train with Kyra (Kirkland) we have a great tour planned and the timing is excellent to help us move forward.”

The final ranking was determined after the two legs of the competition, as only two of the three legs were completed. Morse was the only rider to score over 70% in both tests.

“I was a bit disappointed,” said Morse about not riding the third test. “I was looking forward to the Special and to doing better today than yesterday. But the decision was extremely wise.”

Ground Jury President Janet Foy knew the decision wouldn’t be easy.

“It was a unanimous decision by the Ground Jury,” said Foy. “It’s not bad footing – I don’t know of any footing that could withstand this kind of rain. Our first priority is the safety and welfare of the horses. The (Young Riders) did a great job, but it was deep and slippery and there were still a lot of puddles.”

Pierre St Jacques and Lucky Tiger were second on the strength of their Grand Prix score of 68.596%, and were named Reserve Champions. St. Jacques has taken his time producing the 14-year-old Danish gelding at the Grand Prix level, and his patience was vindicated this weekend.

“I don’t have a sponsor,” said St Jacques. “This is a one man show, so I’m not going to Europe. My goal is Devon, it has been all year. I am going to work on getting Tiger stronger – there is a lot more horse in there, so that’s my goal. Europe isn’t a big part of my plan right now.”

St Jacques was disappointed to not ride the final leg of the competition but felt that the Ground Jury had a tough choice to make.

“I’m a competitor,” said St Jacques. “I go out there to compete, it’s not my decision – but I think it was a wise decision.”

The Intermediaire I Championship was also decided by two classes instead of three as originally scheduled. This exciting group of up-and-coming horses put on a great effort in Friday’s Prix St. Georges and Saturday’s Intermediaire I test. They didn’t get a chance to perform their Freestyle today but Katherine Bateson-Chandler made it pretty clear that she wasn’t going to easily relinquish her top spot with Dea II.

“I would have liked to have done it,” Bateson-Chandler said. “I was really excited and I love my music. So I’m disappointed but I trust the management. I believe she would have been good.”

Her winning scores of 73.105% in the Prix St. Georges and 74.579% in the Intermediaire I meant that Bateson-Chandler claimed her first National Championship. She was also third with Rutherford. Both exciting small tour horses are owned by Jane Forbes Clark.

Bateson-Chandler had Jan Brons hot on her heels with Teutobod. The pair of Wellington-based riders are great friends and their rivalry was fierce.

“I was all geared up to do it,” said Brons. “It was that close.”

“Jan was in fighting form,” said Bateson-Chandler.

Kassandra Barteau is invincible – the 21-year-old Young Rider claimed her third consecutive National Championship in impressive fashion. Despite the downpour, the gutsy Young Riders completed their competition as they were the only class to go on Sunday morning.

Riding GP Raymeister, Barteau left no question that her title defense was not negotiable, as her score of 72.368% in the Young Rider Individual Test was almost three marks better than Caroline Roffman and Accent Aigu FRH.

“I’m really, really proud of him,” said Barteau about the 9-year-old stallion owned by Ginna Frantz. “He was super today, super steady and was with me. I thought it flowed together nicely. He was a little timid with the puddles.”

The novelty hasn’t worn off – Barteau was very emotional about her win.

“I was crying during the national anthem,” she said. “It means a lot.”

Meagan Davis was third today in the Individual Test with a score of 69.984%, but her overall percentage was high enough to land her in the reserve champion honors with Bentley.

“I’m so excited to be here after only riding Bentley for seven months,” said Davis about her relationship with the 16-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding. “He was such a good boy and I am so proud of him. Bentley is a really incredible horse.”

My thanks to the Kansas City Dressage Society for initiating the GMO Challenge to help fundraise for the Region 4 FEI jr/yr teams to NAJYRC!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Here is how it works:
* For each dollar a Region 4 GMO donates toward the team, KCDS will match it up to a total of $1,000.
* Individual and business donations are also welcomed and much needed (though won't generate the match).
* To participate, please make the check out to 'USDF Region 4 FEI jr/yr' and mail it to USDF, 4051 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511.
*  Please send an email to me to let me know that the check is sent so we can track the GMO challenge and other donations and provide appropriate credit through the Region 4 web-site, a banner at NAJYRC, and other outreach.  If you opt to remain anonymous, we can honor that wish, as well (see attached).

A 'gold medal' sponsorship is $2,000, a 'silver medal' sponsorship is $1,000, and a 'bronze medal' sponsorship is $500.  All donations are welcome, as every bit does help with the entries, stabling, shavings, shipping, saddle pads, shirts, hats, and other items needed to present our horses/riders as a team representing Region 4. Sponsors who provide email addresses receive daily updates during the competition on how the Region 4 team rides are doing.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Cheers,
Sarah

Wiese and Lamborghini Take Lead Despite Rain in USEF National “Brentina Cup” Championship at 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions

Release: June 18 2009

By Joanie Morris

Gladstone, NJ – Under the banner of a chilly relentless rain, the 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions got underway on Thursday, June 18. The “Brentina Cup” Riders (aged 20-28) were the first of five groups of horses and riders vying for National Championships titles. The nine “Brentina Cup” Riders were the only division to get a performance in as the rest of the day’s competition was suspended due to the deluge that ensued.

With the hallowed presence of the USET Foundation Headquarters as the backdrop, nine up-and-coming riders went to task before the Championship Ground Jury of Hilda Gurney, Uwe Mechlem, Charlotte Bredahl-Baker, Janet Foy and Lilo Fore.

Jocelyn Wiese and Lamborghini made the best of the treacherous conditions and put is a very confident effort to take the lead on a score of 66.410%.

“It would have been nice if it wasn’t raining,” said the 21-year-old rider. “But it didn’t affect my ride too much. My reins were a little slippery and I was definitely wet but I don’t think it affected my ride.”

Wiese, from Keene, NH, spent time as an Assistant Trainer at Hilltop Farm in Maryland but recently left to go back to school. The Government and Politics major at the University of Maryland was really pleased with her horse’s effort.

“I did the Young Riders Championship three times,” said Wiese. “The Brentina Cup is a stepping stone, it is a good place to get experience. It is almost Grand Prix but not quite. Good place to get our feet wet.”

Her 12-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding tried very hard in spite of the conditions and the test had very polished work.

Wiese and Lamborghini bested Amanda Johnson and Pip who finished on a score of 65.987%. Johnson, who in her final year in the “Brentina Cup” division, also prevailed in the conditions.

“I’m used to riding in the rain,” said Johnson. “I’m from Wisconsin and it rains a lot. I feel like it has rained like this at every show this year – and last year at Dressage at Devon we had a massive downpour during the freestyle.”

Pip was putting in his first effort in the “Brentina Cup” and has recovered from a bout of naughtiness that plagued him when he arrived at Johnson’s barn.

“He was a really naughty 9-year-old Training-level horse when I got him,” said Johnson. “The owner was really gracious and let me keep going with him. This is his first year at this level, he’s much better now – he really just needed a job. Now he’s pretty good.”

Rounding out the top three was Kim Schisler and Duvallier on a score of 65.744% – this pair has a special connection to the title sponsors of the event. Shereen and Jeff Fuqua worked out a special deal with Schisler so that it was possible for her to have the 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding.

“I’m lucky,” said Schisler, who turns 28 on June 19. “It is a super opportunity.”

Duvallier lives at Collecting Gaits, where he is treated like a king. The partnership is reasonably new - they only began competing together this spring after Duvallier got hurt on the plane from California.

Schisler is based outside of Atlanta, her background is in Eventing so she wasn’t fazed by the weather either.

“It seemed like typical cross country weather to me,” said Schisler. “I think it was too my advantage that it stayed cool and wet.”

The footing began to deteriorate by the end of the class – and the management determined that in the best interest of the competitors, activities would be postponed until tomorrow.

The competition resumes tomorrow at 8.00 am with the Young Rider Team Test, followed by the grand Prix at 10.20 am, the Junior Team Test at 1.30 pm and finally the Prix St. Georges at 3.40.

Ok, I'm not sure why my edits did not show on the last posting, but to clarify, I believe Emily Wagner from LaCygne, Kansas has qualified and competed Mushu (in 2006 and earned 15th place as a junior), Molinari in 2007 (as a young rider working student of Cesar Para), Wagnis in 2008 (earning 11th, I believe), and now has qualified Brigadier in 2009.  Hope this is correct now!

Four horses; four years;  Region 4 . . . is there a theme?  And this rider does not turn 22 years of age until January.  Amazing!

CONGRATULATIONS to Emily and her coach/trainer/mom, Jana!

Cheers,
Sarah

Region 4 riders competing for slots on NAJYRC teams and their current posted qualifying scores (if obtained so far -- some shows' scores are not on the USDF web-site yet) are:

FEI Juniors
Chelsea Bendorf (NE)
Amy Hacker* (MO), 64.014%

FEI Young Riders
Hans Baertsch* (MN), 65.285%
Tessa Dick* (KS)
Lauren Gorton* (MO), 65.460%
Emily Wagner* (KS), 68.618% (on Brigadier; Wagnis is not yet qualified.  Only one horse per rider can be competed at NAJYRC in a given year.)
Krissy Wang* (NE), 65.789%
Brianna Zwilling (MN), 67.522%

* denotes the rider has competed on a previous Region 4 team at NAJYRC.

If memory serves me right (if I am wrong, please forgive and correct me . . .), Emily Wagner has earned a slot on a region 4 team to NAJYRC every year since 2006 and has done so qualifying no fewer than three different horses (with that possibly going up to qualifying five different horses over 4 years, a very remarkable feat).  Only two riders currently have higher qualifying scores posted than Emily, and Brian Hafner, originally from MN and now riding in CA, is 4th in the YR list posted on the USDF web-site.

Lauren Gorton has competed Don Perry as a member of the Region 4 FEI junior team 2006-2008* (* earning a team silver medal) and Krissy Wang with Belladiva and Hans Baertsch with Rubinstar GB were also both members of the Region 4 FEI junior teams 2007-2008, also standing on the podium for the silver medal for the team competition last year.

While Krissy and Lauren are currently at Gladstone for the Dressage Festival, scores from that competition does not count toward NAJYRC qualifying scores (it only accepted the top 12 riders in the US per division or their alternates . . .).  Riders can earn qualifying scores at shows in any region.  There is one competition weekend left in Region 4 that is a current year NAJYRC qualifier (Dressage Lite and Dressage Lite Too, June 26-28, Mason City, IA).  As you can see from the averages posted above, there is a very tight race for the 4 positions on the Region 4 young rider team.  Qualifying FEI juniors from region 4 are likely to ride with other riders from regions who do not qualify a full team.

Your sponsorship, encouragement, and cheering on of our riders at the competition (see below) is greatly appreciated!  Region 4's own Lloyd Landkamer is the dressage manager for the NAJYRC this year, so you know it will be an excellently run competition and a joy to watch!  To make a donation to help sponsor our teams, please send a check to 'USDF Region 4 FEI Jr/YR Team', United States Dressage Federation, 4051 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511.  All sponsors are listed on the Region 4 web-site (www.yahoogroups.com/group/USDFRegion4) and additional opportunities for exposure to dressage enthusiasts throughout Region 4 are available (please contact Nancy Gorton at capriole22@... for details and sponsorship levels).

THANK YOU!

The USEF Dressage Festival of Champions vet jog took place today and the final competitor list is available here http://www.usef.org/documents/disciplines/dressage/DressageFestivalSchedule.pdf.  Region 4 fans will recognize Missouri's Lauren Gorton/Don Perry and Nebraska's Kristina Wang/Belladiva in the young rider competition, plus Makenzie Rath/Calido 49 (Nebraska) and Amanda Johnson/Pip (formerly of region 4 (IA), now in region 2 (WI)) in the Brentina Cup.  Lauren has been a member of the Region 4 Junior Team at NAJYRC the past 3 years and this is her first year competiting as a young rider.  She just completed her freshman year at Loyola University in Chicago, where she is a pre-med major. She has had a very short time back at home with Don Perry preparing for this level, a transition made possible thanks, in part, to mom, Nancy, who cared for and rode the stallion while Lauren was in school this past year.  Makenzie graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in May and will be moving to Singapore on July 18th.  She will be living and working there for the next two years.  Calido will still be living his happy life at Providence Farm hopefully helping others learn more about dressage under the watchful eye of her coach, Jami Kment.  After one year at the University of Nebraska-Omaha as a pre-med (I believe), Krissy spent the last year concentrating on her dressage as a working student at Kim and Yvonne Barteau's KYB Dressage, Grand Prix Equestrian, Maple Park, IL.

Live scoring by rider or class will be available at http://www.usef.org/contentPage2.aspx?id=dressagefestival.  Please help cheer on our horses/riders!  If I accidentally missed anyone (or horses owned by Region 4 owners) please do share the information with all of us.

Thanks!

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reported on 11 Jun
2009] an outbreak of equine piroplasmosis (EP) in Jackson County,
[Missouri]. The last reported occurrence was in February [2009].

EP is a tick-borne disease that affects horses, donkeys, mules, and
zebras. The disease, caused by _Theileria equi_, is transmitted via
tick bites or through mechanical transmission by improperly
disinfected needles or surgical instruments, according to the US
Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service [USDA-APHIS].

The source of the most recent outbreak was deemed "unknown or
inconclusive."

The affected premises is a horse stable in Jackson County involving a
7-year-old quarter horse gelding purchased 6 months ago. The horse
showed clinical signs consistent with EP on [1 Jun 2009]. The next
day, the horse was presented to a veterinary medical hospital in
Kansas because of an acute illness consistent with infection of a
blood-borne pathogen. The horse was placed in quarantine and isolation.

The horse and other animals on the affected premises -- 63 including
horses, ponies, and mules -- were examined for ticks. No ticks were
found, according to the OIE report.

Test results for the other animals are pending, and the premises
remains under quarantine. The epidemiological investigation is being
conducted by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in
conjunction with the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

ProMED-mail Rapporteur Brent Barrett

[If the horse or horses have equine piroplasmosis then there was a
tick at some point on the animal. Ticks generally engorge themselves
on the host and then fall off. So the fact that a tick is not found
now, may not be that big a deal. What is a big deal is if that tick
is spreading the disease to another animal and has not been found.

He is also a T.E.A.M. graduate of the Linda Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness Program and has completed training in Feldenkreis and Eutonie body awareness. Michael has worked with two of the world’s most renowned trainers, Willi Schultheis and Rudolph Zeilinger.  Michael has a vast knowledge of the German Training System and is best known for his work on the biomechanics of the dressage seat. All of his long time students are known for the effective, secure seat, which allows them to give specific, refined aids to the horse.
Michael Beining believes that the ultimate goal of dressage is harmony between the horse and the rider. This harmony can be achieved through learning how to influence our horses simply by developing our body awareness, relaxation and suppleness. Michael takes riders of all levels and riding disciplines not only dressage.

A horse in Clay County has tested positive for rabies, according to
health officials. Owners of the horse and their family are undergoing
rabies vaccination as a precaution.

This is the 2nd case of rabies in Clay County this year [2009]. The
1st was a skunk that tested positive for the virus in March. Since 1
Jan 2009, 38 positive cases of animal rabies have been reported in
Kansas. The rabid animals testing positive so far include 30 skunks, 3
dogs, 2 cows, one bobcat, one fox, and one raccoon.

The risk for human exposure is real, but preventable. Animal
rabies is common in Kansas and skunks are the animals most likely to
have the disease. However, skunks can pass the virus to other
animals. Prevention of human rabies depends on maintaining an
adequate buffer zone of vaccinated domestic animals, eliminating
human exposures to stray and wild animals, and providing exposed
persons with prompt post-exposure rabies treatment. The last human
case of rabies in Kansas was reported in 1968.

The Clay County Health Department has reminded people who own pets
and livestock to make sure their animals receive rabies vaccination
from their veterinarian. A vaccine is available for dogs, cats,
ferrets, horses, cattle, and sheep. All mammals are susceptible to
the virus and it is usually transmitted from the bite of an infected
animal.

"I recommend every dog, cat, and horse owner to contact their
veterinarian about rabies vaccination," according to Dana Rickley,
Clay County Health Administrator. "Sometimes we forget that a rabies
vaccination is not a once in a lifetime event for our animals, they
need periodic boosters to stay safe from the virus."

Clay County Health Department and local veterinarians offer these
tips to prevent rabies:
- Have your veterinarian vaccinate all dogs, cats, ferrets, horses,
and valuable breeding stock (cattle and sheep) against rabies.
- If bitten by an animal, seek medical attention and report the bite
to your local public health department or animal control department
immediately.
- If your animal is bitten, contact your veterinarian for advice.
- Do not handle, or feed wild animals. Never adopt wild animals or
bring them into your home.
- Do not try to nurse sick animals to health. Call animal control or
an animal rescue agency for assistance.
- Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or
domestic, even if they appear friendly.

For more information about rabies, contact your veterinarian or the
Clay County Health Department at 785-632-3193.

Subject: USDF Phones

Good afternoon,

The USDF office is experiencing difficulties with our phone system.  We have incoming call capabilities at this time, but cannot call out (locally or for long distance).  The problem is being addressed, but at this time, we do not know how long it will take to correct this issue.  The USDF fax machines can receive faxes, but we are unable to send faxes at this time.  The office has asked staff to change their voice mail to reflect we are experiencing phone difficulties and cannot return calls, and to leave their e-mail address in the voice mail message as a method of contact until this problem is resolved.  The office will also be sending an E-news to our members about this phone issue, as well.

We hope to have this problem resolved as soon as possible.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.  If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact me.
