Officials blame mineral overdose in horse deaths
------------------------------------------------
Florida's top veterinarian on Tuesday [28 Apr 2009] blamed the deaths
of 21 elite polo horses on an overdose of a common mineral that helps
muscles recover from fatigue.

Florida's state veterinarian, Dr Thomas J Holt, said toxicology tests
on the dead horses showed significantly increased selenium levels.

The horses from the Venezuelan-owned Lechuza Caracas team began
collapsing [19 Apr 2009] as they were unloaded from trailers at the
International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington before a
championship match. Some died at the scene, others hours later.

"Signs exhibited by the horses and their rapid deaths were consistent
with toxic doses of selenium," Holt said.

The team was preparing to play in the sport's US Open and was seen as
a top contender.

A Florida pharmacy that mixed a brew of vitamins and minerals for the
team on order from its Florida veterinarian said Tuesday [28 Apr
2009] that the strength of selenium was incorrect. Jennifer Beckett,
chief operating officer for Franck's Pharmacy in Ocala, Florida,
would not say whether the incorrect amount was specified in the
veterinarian order or was a pharmacy error. "We continue to cooperate
fully with the authorities as their investigations proceed," she
said. "We cannot discuss further details." Lechuza had no comment on
the toxicology report.

The polo team had hoped to get a compound similar to a name-brand
supplement known as Biodyl. The supplement is used around the world
but hasn't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] in
the US.

Veterinarians often turn to compounding pharmacies like Franck's for
medications that can't be found on shelves, but the dispensaries
generally can only recreate unapproved drugs in limited
circumstances, such as for health reasons.

The FDA and state authorities are investigating.

Biodyl is a supplement made in France by Duluth, Georgia-based animal
pharmaceutical firm Merial Ltd. It wasn't clear how close Franck's
mixture came to the name-brand drug. Lechuza said what they ordered
was supposed to contain vitamin B, potassium, magnesium, and selenium.

The injections provided by Franck's were given to the horses just
hours before their deaths.

Dr Murl Bailey, a toxicology professor at Texas A&M University's
College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, said selenium
is a common mineral needed in small doses by humans and animals for
growth and tissue stabilization. It can also help muscles recover
from fatigue.

"It's a naturally occurring mineral in the Earth's crust," Bailey
said. But he said it was generally not needed as a supplement since
most people and animals get it in their food.

Bailey said an overdose of selenium can cause the veins in the body
to dilate, "so there's really no blood coming back to the heart."

"The horses go into shock," he said. Necropsies previously revealed
bleeding in the horses' lungs.

Dr Tam Garland, a toxicologist at the Texas Veterinary Medical
Diagnostic Laboratory, said the horses' deaths would likely have been
painful, and irreversible after the overdose. "Hemorrhaging in the
lungs tells me these horses couldn't breathe," Garland said.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week this week, I wanted to share feedback Region 4 GMOs are giving about their volunteers.

This is from Kathy Roby of the North Woods Dressage Association --
"We gave the USDF tote bag and gift certificate [you sent us] to Jeannette Lang.  Jeannette is a fairly new NWDA Board Member who serves as the Board secretary.  She has organized a Junior/Young Rider Clinic and a saddlefitting clinic, and has taken responsibility for the club's equipment trailer.  We appreciate her willingness to take on club tasks."

Thanks for your volunteering, Jeannette and all the NWDA board members!

Cheers,

Subject: LinkedIn discussion on 'managing and motivating committees to increase productivity and effectiveness'

I thought you might want to see this chain of discussion on a topic of dear interest to Region 4 GMOs, too.  It is from LinkedIn.

Any tips, tricks, or recommendations for managing and motivating committees to increase productivity and effectiveness?

I am the ED of an educational organization that has been around for nearly 50 years. Since the organization has only one full-time staff member, we rely heavily on our committees to develop the educational materials, recommendations, etc. that are produced by the organization.

We have committee structure guidelines that include mission statements, size limits, and term limits. The board is responsible for appointing committee chairs and approving the committee members (committee members are not necessarily board members).

Committees only meet once a year (during the annual meeting). Committee work that is conducted between annual meetings is generally done via email discussion lists.

Even though we have a system in place to monitor committees and make them accountable, committee output has been decreasing over the past few years. People have good intentions, but time is clearly an issue.

How can we get our volunteer committee chairs and members, who already have busy lives, to be more engaged and motivated so that we can increase committee effectiveness and productivity? Should we restructure our committee system and consider alternative options, such as short-term task forces or ad hoc committees vs. long-term committees? Or is it a matter of finding ways to motivate the members?

Thought leaders identify the problems for you. I help you figure out how to solve those problems and move ahead.

    This is a fascinating challenge.
First, I am always itnerested in motive. Why is someone even interested in volunteering for an organization and what they want to get from the time and effort they invest. Once I know that I can start to work on understanding them and whether or not they will keep their commitments to complete work on time.

Do you have a systematic way of touching base with them to keep them informed of changes, new ideas etc. Twitter comes to mind as one way. Good old fashioned email might be another. Combining several methods might be best. Keeping in touch and reminding them as to why they volunteered may help with motivation and them getting things done.

Your suggestion to restructure is certainly worth trying. Let people sprint and take some time off between may be a good way to understand the source of your problem.

I'd be open to some further email off the record if you like.

As Hildy Gottlieb likes to say, voluinteers need a dose of the passion and meaningful work. Are the volunteers committed, or are they persuaded to serve? Also, is their work important, and do they recognize it as important?

Many nonprofit organizations have a legacy of too many standing committees with biolerplate agendas. When is the last time you and your board looked at the committee structure and assessed its relevance to the organization's priorities?

More volunteers, and esepcially younger ones, tend to volunteer episodically rather than regularly. This would argue for more ad hoc committees and short-term working groups focused on a specific project or goal.

SImilarly, volunteers need to be assured that their work is both prescribed and proscribed, and that sufficient supports are available to help them complete their work. The less specific the duties, the less important and the less urgent the tasks, the less committed the volunteers will be.

Finally, no committee is more effective than its chair and its staff liaison. These two people model the conduct of the committee members and set committee member norms, either consciously or unconsciously.

It sounds to me like there is not enough personal involvement in your committee structure. Meeting once a year, despite email discussions, is not enough. I understand that people have time constraints but I know that you will get more commitment and productivity if committee members relate more to one another personally and at the same time get a shot in the arm about your organization. Try the following: three meetings a year at the office. Serve food. Doesn't have to be fancy, but meeting over sandwiches at dinner or coffee etc. at breakfast is an ice-breaker and is also minimally disruptive to the workday. Make sure that volunteers get a phone call reminder about the meeting and a thank-you for attending. Are these volunteers being properly acknowledged other than a mention at the annual meeting? Is their personal connection to the organization revisited from time to time? Are they more than an email address? I realize that all this takes staff time, but I think it is time well invested and may also make your work more rewarding. Let me know what you think. And good luck!

KCDS Kids Camp for 2009 will be a Junior Rider Symposium!!

After several very successful years of Kids Camp held at Longview Horse Park,
the Kansas City Dressage Society board has opted to try a different format for
2009. One of the main purposes of our organization is dressage education for
the young and not so young alike. Using the Symposium format will offer Junior
Riders the opportunity to have focused instruction from a top clinician, Laurie
Hedlund, in a symposium setting along with several educational sessions from
area equine professionals. A symposium setting is designed to engage not only
the rider but also the other symposium participants and auditors.

Laurie is a FEI level competitor who has earned her USDF Bronze and Silver
Medals as well as a USDF “L” judge graduate with distinction. She is also a
USDF Certified Instructor through Second Level. For the past 17 years Laurie
has been under the tutelage of Alf Athenstaedt, former Trainer and Director of
Performance at Tempel Farms. Laurie has ridden with dressage notables Michael
Page, Michelle Gibson, Betsey Steiner, Lars Holmberg, Charles DeKnaffy and
Catherine Haddad. Laurie has also been a guest student at Gestut Ammerland in
Germany.

Laurie is calm, quiet and focused both as a person and as a rider. And she
inspires the same in her students and throughout her clinics. Junior riders
will benefit from her patient and caring style.

The symposium will be held at Stoney Meadow Farms, Bonner Springs, KS and riding
slots will be limited to 10 Junior Rider participants from ages 12 – 18.
Younger participants may be considered if space allows. Preference will be
given first to KCDS Junior members. Riding participants will each have a
private lesson on their horse both Saturday and Sunday as well as several
educations sessions. Non-riding participants are also encouraged and may
participate in all sessions, meals and lectures. Riding and non-riding
participants are also invited to stay at Stoney Meadow Farms through the
Symposium weekend.

The symposium style format will benefit riders, non-riders and auditors alike as
Laurie will talk through the exercises used, corrections, successes as well as
engage the other participants and auditors in the sessions. Area professionals
will provide educational sessions on topics to help participants learn about
horse care. Topics may include equine nutrition, hoof care, veterinary health,
acupuncture and massage therapy.

As many of you may recall, last year we had a GMO Leadership conference call on membership recruitment and retention.  Tonight I updated the data on memberships and I just posted the regional data on the Region 4 web-site (www.yahoogroups.com/group/USDFRegion4) under FILES.  I forgot to add on the posted graph a reminder that the 2004-2008 data are for the full membership year, whereas the 2009 data I just pulled off the USDF web-site tonight (the graph does say 'spring 2009' but I wanted to explain what I meant a little better).  Last year, Region 4 had 70% of total GMO memberships for the year submitted to USDF by this time (though this did vary a fair amount by GMO).

I did send the President of each GMO a bar chart of their specific GMO and cced the GMO Council liaison serving that part of the Region (either Anne Sushko -- north-- or Kate Walter --south).  If you want to brainstorm membership outreach they are good resources and I am always happy to help out.  Plus, the minutes from last year's presentation (including suggestions from several GMOs who participated in the call) are still posted on our web-site, again under FILES.

Actually, overall Region 4 Group Memberships have increased by 71 people since last year at this time, so this is good news and bucking the national trend.  The data is being provided to help you plan and provide outreach.  I hope you find it useful.

Posted at www.clubequestrian.com (this is not an endorsement . . .  just sharing with you so you can decide for yourselves.  Sarah)

When my son Michael became a High School Junior our sites started to focus on college riding opportunities.  The difficulties of navigating through the recruiting process lead us to the start of an exciting new web site www.EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.com. This web site has become your one stop location to get your college equestrian riding questions answered.  High school athletes can post an academic and riding resume along with photos and full length video of them riding; the athletes are sorted by graduating year and chosen discipline.  This creates a unique location for college coaches who are searching for their future college riding team members.

The site also is designed to educate the student athlete about the different college riding programs, with more than 300 IHSA colleges and 23 NCAA programs there is allot of information to get through, most athletes and parents start out not even knowing the difference between the two college riding organizations or how to navigate their very different recruiting requirements. Many colleges are getting a leg up on their competition and advertising on the site, the college bio pages where created so that the equestrian athlete can go and get a brief overview of a college and then, if interested, link back to the college itself.

The equestrian college experiences are as varied as our disciplines; colleges have programs for dressage, hunt seat equitation, western horsemanship, reining, international jumpers and even rodeo.  In IHSA programs they offer divisions for every skill level, from beginner through open, where Medal/ Maclay riders are sought, in hunt seat and beginner through reining in western.

You are personally invited to peruse the web site; your involvement is encouraged and your feedback welcome.  Anyone with questions can contact Bridget or Mike Imparato at 352-746-5875 or go to www.EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.com

Strangles: Answers to Common Questions

March 31 2009 Article # 13876
http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=13876

Strangles is a highly contagious disease that causes horses to have swollen and painful lymph nodes that block their airway and can cause difficult breathing. The name was coined because these enlarged nodes sometimes (but rarely) suffocate affected horses.

The first reported case of strangles in a horse was made in Europe in 1251 by Jordanus Ruffus. Convinced of its contagious nature, Ruffus recommended isolating affected animals and pointed out that the most common source of infection for horses was water buckets previously used by infected animals. This advice remains valid today.

Here are some common questions and answers about strangles:

Strangles ruptured abscesses

Abscesses in the lymph nodes will mature and rupture, draining a creamy pus.

What causes strangles and what should I expect to see?

Strangles is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus equi (commonly known as S. equi), which gains access to a horse either through the animal's nose or mouth. Bacteria then invade the lymph nodes in the head and throat area, making them swollen and painful. With time, abscesses in the lymph nodes will mature and rupture to drain a creamy pus. Other lymph nodes in the head and throat may be involved but not be apparent because many of them will drain into the horse's throat and nasal cavity.

Additional signs of the disease that often develop include fever, loss of appetite, and listlessness.

How does a horse become exposed to strangles?

Most horses that develop strangles contract the disease through contact with the infected nasal discharges from another horse that has an active case of strangles or has recently recovered from strangles. Direct transmission occurs when horses, being very social creatures, have nose-to-nose contact with each other. Indirect transmission occurs when a susceptible horse shares feed, water buckets or housing with an infected horse.

About 20% of horses continue to shed S. equi in their nasal secretions for several weeks after they have recovered from the disease, making all recovered horses a potential source of infection for at least six weeks after clinical signs have resolved. An extremely small percentage (1% to 10%) of horses continue to shed S. equi in their nasal secretions for months to years. These horses frequently have guttural-pouch infections caused by S. equi.

Fortunately, S. equi is not a hearty organism and does not persist for long in the environment. While it is possible that a horse could contract strangles from the pasture that housed a horse with strangles, it is very unlikely.

How will a veterinarian know if a horse has strangles?

A veterinarian generally will diagnose a case of strangles based on the classical clinical signs. The gold standard to confirm the infection is a bacteriologic culture from either nasal swabs or pus from the abscesses. Another test is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which detects the DNA of S. equi. While this test is excellent, it does not distinguish between dead and live organisms and therefore should not be used alone to make a diagnosis of strangles.

What should be done if there is a strangles outbreak?

Proper management by the horse owner or the farm manager is the key to the successful control of an outbreak of strangles. Working with a veterinarian, the owner or farm manager can identify affected groups of horses, look at the geography of the premises and review management practices to develop a practical disease-control strategy.

Several specific aims of the plan should include:

1. Preventing the spread of S. equi infection to horses on other premises and to new arrivals on the infected premises. This is done by stopping all movement of horses on and off the affected premises until further notice. Horses with strangles and their contact should be maintained in well-demarcated "dirty" quarantine areas. Clustering the cases in groups should allow parts of the premises to be allocated as "dirty" and other parts as "clean."

2. Establishing when horses that have recovered are no longer infectious. The veterinarian will institute a program of culturing nasal swabs over several weeks. Horses that consistently test negative are returned to the clean area.

3. Investigating long-term carriers. If a horse continues to shed S. equi longer than expected, the veterinarian will recommend an endoscopy examination of the guttural pouches and determine treatment if needed.

4. Preventing infection spreading from dirty areas to clean areas of the premise. Ideally, the individuals working with horses should be divided to deal with each of the two groups of horses. If this is not possible, horses in the clean area should be attended to first. The veterinarian will also be able to describe methods of disinfecting facilities.

Is it possible to vaccinate against strangles?

Field experience suggests that vaccinating horses usually reduces the incidence and severity of strangles. However, vaccination is not an absolute preventative. Researchers are actively working to develop improved strangles vaccines to protect horses from this highly contagious disease.

The equine veterinary community needs your help in this endeavor. The Morris Animal Foundation, the Grayson Jockey-Club Research Foundation, the American Quarter Horse Foundation, the American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation, Inc. all support work in this area.

Please contact the AAEP Foundation for information about how to make donations for equine research, or call 800/443-0177 (within the U.S.) or at 859/233-0147. This is just one of the many efforts that the AAEP is coordinating on behalf of the industry through the Equine Research Coordination Group (ERCG), which is comprised of researchers and organizations that support equine research.

Formally organized in 2006, the ERCG has a mission of advancing the health and welfare of horses by promoting the discovery and sharing of new knowledge, enhancing awareness of the need for targeted research, educating the public, expanding fundraising opportunities, and facilitating cooperation among funding agencies.

The USDF office will be closed on Friday, April 10 (Good Friday).  Just thought you would want to know in case you have any business to complete with the office.

What do you think of the on-line magazine?  Has anyone had a chance to look at the April issue or use the special features available on-line?  I would love your feedback.  The spring executive board meeting is coming up (April 15-19), so any feedback you have I would be able to share at that time.

Don't forget, too, that nominations for several important USDF positions are still being taken.  Please nominate by April 15 Participating Member delegate (Region 4 gets 5 such delegates) and Youth Executive Board nominees.  Nominations for the USDF President and Treasurer and the even-numbered regional directors (so, yes, Region 4) are due to the USDF office by June 1.  Although representing you has been an honor and I have loved the opportunity to support and advocate for Region 4, I am not running for re-election, believing 'new blood' is a good thing and there are many talented volunteers in our region.  I believe that this year all voting will be electronic, so please help spread the word.  Rebecca Hafner is our Nominations Council Coordinator in Region 4, so if you have any questions, please touch base with her at rebahafner@....

Cheers,
Sarah

As the 2009 recipient of the Dressage Foundation's Gifted Fund scholarship, I'd like to echo Joann's message.  As I am making final plans for my training, I am so grateful to have this incredilbe opportunity made possible only through this scholarship.  I will be going to California in October to spend 10 days with Sue Halasz followed by several days with Steffen Peters.  As an AA working full time, taking time away for this type of intensive training was only a dream.  TDF Gifted Fund scholarship has allowed me to take my dream and turn it into reality.  For that I am extremely grateful!

As the 2008 Region 4 recipient of the Dressage Foundation's Gifted Fund scholarship, I wanted to take a few minutes to remind all the adult amateur riders about this opportunity and the September deadline.

Will you please send this on to your newsletter editors too?

The Dressage Foundation has multiple programs, one of these is the Gifted Fund Scholarship, which now gives the recipient $900. Full details are online at
http://www.dressagefoundation.org/Help_For_Adult_Amatuers.htm

The scholarship is described on the site as "The Carol Lavell Gifted Fund:
Seeded with Donations received in special remembrance of Carol's great Dressage horse Gifted. Many other friends of The Dressage Foundation have added Donations and the Scholarship Fund has grown steadily over the years. This Scholarship enables Adult Amateurs to set aside quality-time, in concentrated training away from the daily pressures of job and family, with a horse the recipient owns."

The scholarship information states, "We look for riders who want to work on their riding in a situation that is normally unavailable to them because of their other obligations. We encourage the rider to work with a trainer with which they have a working history."

Many of us take regular lessons, but to me, five to seven days away with my horse, focusing only on my riding, had not happened since early in college! The Gifted Scholarship gave me the opportunity to pack up & haul to my regular instructor for 5 days, something I could not do without the extra funds the scholarship provided. I rode a lesson every day on my own horse, and a second lesson to focus on my seat and basic position to continue to advance up the levels. We made memories that week that will always be with me, and the impact of that week is something I have reflected on often, both in my riding, and in establishing a stronger partnership with my horse.

With the grant application deadline still several months away, now is the time to begin your planning and application, and request the letters of recommendation!

As I glance around the dressage world, many of us have been touched by TDF, directly or indirectly. Jan Brons was recently announced as a recipient of a larger grant from TDF, and I remember auditing a clinic he gave, and thinking how gifted this man is... The GMO that I am a part of has received several grants from TDF to help hold clinics, and the impact of those grants is felt by a large group of people! Perhaps you personally know others who have received TDF funds.

As we move into show season, its with a big smile that I got to tell Lynn at TDF that my GMO was once again going to have a benefit class at our fall show (any show can add this, contact TDF). TDF also has an online book of memory, a lovely way to remember someone in our sport. While so many non profits are struggling to survive, I urge anyone who can to support TDF in any way you can...

Enjoy your trips down the centerline,
