this recent press release details the April 30th deadline for competitions to be
held in
2010... remember that there are many rules about competitions that are USEF or
NAJYRC
qualifiers, please look up the individual program your competition is applying
for... for
example, some of these require 2 S judges, etc.

Please help pass this on to show management that you know, so no GMO or company
is
surprised by this april 30th deadline for shows that may be 18 months away.

THANKS!

Subject: Free online tools you might find useful
joannmessers...

Thought I would share a couple of electronic, free tools you might find useful.

First, Google has an online calendar that you can make public & let others
subscribe to it -
- example, 4H group's meetings, or club sports practices, or committee meetings,
or GMO
meetings, etc. Once it is public, others can subscribe to this too. For
example, you might
want to set one up for your group, then invite the board to join via email.
Everyone needs
a google account (same user name & password if you have gmail already). When
you set
up an event, you can set up pop up reminders, email reminders, etc.

Another nice feature is if you use google as your home page, you can
customize the
home page, adding a calendar widget, and show all the meetings, etc on your home
page.

The second thing that I have found very useful is the website called BaseCamp,
by
37signals. This is an online project management tool, and you can have To Do
lists and
comments and milestones with associated the events. One of the things we use
often is a
comment with a document attached -say to review your Policy & procedures
documents.
You can have one project for free... and there is a pay as you go version if you
want to add
more projects. I use this in my own horse business, as well as in my day job,
and have
found it a very handy way for multiple people to share documents, work at their
own pace
from different parts of the country, and share ideas effectively.

One of the features here again is publishing the calendar, so for example at
work I get a
subscription to CMP's basecamp projects on my icalendar, and my home google
calendar
has a subscription to YourNextSportHorse, where my horse business items are...

Because both are web based, no one has any software to purchase, and both work
for PC
or mac users.

HTH!

While this newsletter is written specifically for competition contacts, competitors, breeders, sponsors or trainers may wish to share their feedback on the types of competitions and classes offered by the competitions they attend, so I am sharing this with you.  Sometimes a discussion with your GMO or local show manager that you would like to see a sport horse division or might have students moving into the FEI jr/yr classes is the way to see them come to your area!

You can also share your wishes/preferences with our Region 4 volunteers:

slp4mag

Much USDF volunteer activity is organized into its Council and Committee structure and some of that will be changing in the next couple years through the USDF ad hoc committee on governance activities.  Councils are groups that, by design, have representation from each region of the US.  A Council Coordinator agrees to serve for one year and there are guidelines/timelines for Council work.  I am happy to introduce our Region 4 Coordinators and the Council mission, goals and objectives they will be working on for our Region.  I am sure they would welcome your input, questions, and feedback.  The USDF web-site does list the information, too, so if you misplace this email, you can always look it up there (and the magazine publishes the contacts, though not the council mission, goals and objectives) on a regular basis.  Coordinators can make good speakers for meetings, too!  I do solicit help from across the region, so if anyone from Kansas or North Dakota want to volunteer for region 4 activities, I have plenty of additional volunteer activities to plug you into to help Region 4!

OOOOOOH – would you please share that press release since people are hot on this topic right now?  I was at the World Cup a few years ago when the top jumpers competed against the top barrel racers.  Rodrigo Pessoa won that competition!!

I don’t know a darn thing about western riding, but there are a whole lot of kids out there that NEED USPC’s horse management.  I had to stop going to our local rodeo because they made me a nervous wreck in the stable area.  My husband would spend the whole day trying to calm me down.  If we can reach out to those kids, I think they would come in droves!

You are absolutely right that it should only be an option. I have 3 boys, 2 still in PC, but their heart strings belong to western riding. They would LOVE the western PC. I think it must be a "guy" thing. 3D)
Most people don't realize how closely related dressage and western are. Just saw a news release that
Anky Van Grunstien, the top dressage rider from Germany is going to compete in dressage and reining at the WEG.
THAT ought to turn some heads. =)

Hi Sarah:

I hope that all is well with you!

I have attached an article that was published in the February issue of the Contact.  Wasn’t sure if you wanted to include it in your publication, as several SD people were there.

Also, our next symposium will be the Scale of Training – at the Elkhorn Equestrian Center – April 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Michael Beining will be doing a lecture/classroom approach on Friday evening –  followed by two days of demo riders and discussions.  Anyone is welcome to attend and, if there are riders who want to bring their horses, that is also an option.

More information to follow soon.  We are still working on the details (schedule) and costs.

Thanks!! Karen

Thanks for your questions about this event.  The silent auction is a fund raiser for USDF Region 4.  Region 4 had been trying to schedule our own symposium and Mary Wanless was one of the potential clinicians Jeanne Ahrenholz was pursuing (Jeanne is our volunteer symposium organizer and the clinician list originated from input from two Region 4 mid-year and one USDF convention meeting).  When Jeanne found out that Mary was already scheduled for the Minneapolis area to teach in a symposium format, she asked Cathy Belzer if we could partner on this and that is how this whole opportunity unfolded.  Alicia Cozine, CSDEA President, has been informed/invited and we have been in touch much about the USDF Region 4 adult clinic that your GMO is hosting, too, to ensure the dates of events would not conflict or reduce participation.  Since this is only the 2nd planning meeting, it may just be that it takes a bit of time to get the news out.  Glad to know you are interested!  Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Sarah

SO YOU WANT TO COMPETE AT THE NAJYRC

By Nancy Gorton

USDF Region 4 FEI Junior and Young Rider Coordinator

I would like to shed some light on the intriguing yet daunting thought of qualifying for the NAJYRC (North American Junior and Young Rider Championships).  This year the competition will be held in Lexington, KY, at the Kentucky Horse Park, July 22nd through the 26th, 2009.

First things first:

Rule definition of “Junior”: “A person may compete as a Junior from the beginning of the calendar year in which he [she] reaches the age of 14 until the end of the calendar year in which he [she] reaches the age of 18.”

Rule definition of “Young Rider”: “A person may compete as a Young Rider from the beginning of the calendar year in which he [she] reaches the age of 16 until the end of the calendar year in which he [she] reaches the age of 21.”

Juniors require a horse that can score above 62% consistently at 3rd and 4th level. Young Riders require a horse that can score above 62% at PSG. The horse, rider and owner of the horse must all have a current USDF and USEF membership.  The horse and the rider must also have an FEI Registration number. The rider must submit a declaration of intent by March 1 of the year they are wishing to qualify. The declaration of intent (DOI) can be downloaded from the USDF website.

Young Riders DOI: http://www.usdf.org/docs/competitions/najyrc/NAYRCDeclarationofIntent.pdf

Juniors DOI: http://www.usdf.org/docs/competitions/najyrc/NAJCDeclarationofIntent.pdf

The rider must also have paid the IHP Discipline dues prior to any CDI they compete in for qualifying purposes and prior to the actual NAJYRC should they make the team. The horse must also have a current FEI passport.  A chart of the cost of each of these items and the date by which they are needed can be viewed online at: http://www.usdf.org/docs/competitions/najyrc/DeclarationGuide.pdf

So you have the horse, you’ve filled out all the necessary forms and paid all the necessary dues and fees, now you, your horse and your trainer need to perfect the tests you will be performing.  Each level, Junior and Young Rider, has two, the “team” test and the “individual” test.  You must also have a freestyle for your competition level and you must score at least 62% once on your freestyle at one of your qualifying competitions.  To be considered for the team you must obtain an average of 62% from at least three different qualifying competitions. At each official USDF qualifying competition you must ride both the team test and the individual test.  One will be offered one day and one the next at the qualifying competitions. Any competitions which are two shows in one weekend will only count as one qualifying competition for these purposes. If you choose to compete at more than 3 qualifying competitions in order to improve your average only one “extra” competition score set will be dropped; i.e. if you compete at 5 qualifying competitions only one set will be dropped.  In some cases competing at more than four competitions can hurt your average.  These rules are available on the USDF website.

This link is for the Young Riders rule book: http://www.usdf.org/docs/competitions/najyrc/YRQualifyingCriteria.pdf

This link is for the Juniors rule book: http://www.usdf.org/docs/competitions/najyrc/JQualifyingCriteria.pdf

Now some advice:

Your parents will be your greatest support for this endeavor. Treat them well, appreciate everything they do, especially when they are gasping for air when they discover the cost of all this, on top of the cost of the horse. Once you decide you want to do this and can find a way to finance it, be determined.  Much will happen to discourage you, that is life, but be persistent and committed. You will have the most profound life changing experiences if you choose to pursue this dream. You will make new friends and you will find out just how far you can push yourself and your horse to greatness. Remain humble when you win. Support your team even before they become your team-mates.  The key to wining at the NAJYRC, besides great scores, in the team competition is to be the closest knit team on site.  Your ability to cheer each other and to help each other will make your competition wish they were on your team and then they start to wonder. Plus who doesn’t want to be part of a team that holds each member with high regard.

Remember that qualifying is winning, even though you may not have one of the top four qualifying averages.  Being one of the very few competitors at the NAJYRC is also winning, ribbon or no ribbon, medal or no medal. Last year there were only 35 Juniors that competed and 37 Young Riders. A very small number considering the competition is open to all North American dressage riders ages 14-21. Dedication, sacrifice, a strong support system and determination are a common thread to all those competing at these levels.

Here are the links to the qualifying competitions in Regions 2, 4 and 9.

Olympian Charlotte Bredahl-Baker Signed for Platinum Performance/USDF Adult Clinic Series

Lexington, KY (February 12, 2009) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) announced the signing of United States Olympian Charlotte Bredahl-Baker as the clinician for the Platinum Performance/USDF Adult Clinic Series.   This series will consist of nine clinics over the next two years beginning in the fall of 2009.

“We had a super successful series with Jane Savoie, so we are thrilled to bring Charlotte on board. We believe she brings many of the same teaching and training skills as Jane, but with a slightly different approach so it will be exciting to watch the series unfold,” stated USDF Director of Marketing Linda Schultz.

In 1992 Charlotte and her horse, Monsieur, were part of the bronze medal winning Olympic Team in Barcelona. Charlotte has represented the United States in many international dressage competitions including 1997, when she and her other horse, Lugano, were part of the silver medal winning United States team at the North American Championship in Maryland.
In 2004, Charlotte's stallion, Windfall CB was named USDF Horse of the Year at Intermediate I. In 2005, Charlotte and Eskada won California Dressage Society (CDS) and Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Championships at Prix St. Georges and Intermediate I Freestyle. In the same year, Charlotte and Komo won CDS and Great American/USDF Regional Championships at Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle. In 2006, when competing in Florida, both Eskada and Komo qualified in the top twelve for the National Championships at Gladstone in Intermediate I and Grand Prix, respectively.

Charlotte was born and raised in Denmark. She moved to the United States in 1979 and is currently a United States Equestrian Federation “S” rated judge.

For more information about the Platinum Performance/USDF Adult Clinic Series, or to find specific dates and locations for the series (available after April 1), visit the USDF Web site or contact the USDF office.

Founded in 1973, the United States Dressage Federation is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to education, recognition of achievement, and promotion of dressage.  For more information about USDF membership or programs, visit www.usdf.org, e-mail usdressage@..., or call (859) 971-2277.

I learned tonight that Anne Sushko is the proud grandmother of a second granddaughter as of last nigh!  I don't have a name or other details yet.  Anne, of course, actually took the time to email that she wouldn't make the call tonight on the Region 4 silent auction for the May symposium . . ..  I just had to laugh!  What dedication!  Enjoy your grandma time, Anne!

Well known freestyle choreographer and author, Karen Robinson, will be in Sioux
Falls
next month. If you want to learn how to design a freestyle of your own, learn
about the
benefits of riding to music, and see how different musical choices have a
dramatic impact
on the way a freestyle looks to the judge, this clinic is for you!! Riders of
ANY level are
welcome!

NOW IS THE TIME to sign up - full details below. Thanks!

*******
Karen Robinson will be returning to the Sioux Falls, SD area the last weekend in
March,
2009, for another Musical Freestyle clinic.

The weekend will begin with a unique Friday evening presentation, highlighting
Karen's
trip to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the competition their, and her experience
in China in
general. There will also be a question and answer session, so feel free to
bring your
questions! Friday night's lecture is being hosted by Performance Plus Arabians,
a facility
just west of Sioux Falls on 41st Street. A lovely lounge area with kitchenette
an full bath
make the Performance Plus facility feel more like your living room than an
equine facility.
The Friday evening discussion will begin at 7 pm, and is sure to be intriguing
to riders of
any discipline.

Saturday & Sunday riders will be learning about freestyles, and choreographing
their own
freestyles for competition; riders of all levels are encouraged to apply to
ride, as there is
still a rider spot open. Auditors learn much from Karen's style at clinics, and
several
auditors have learned so much from Karen's clinics that they are able to go home
and
create their own freestyle design. The choreography portion of the weekend will
be held
at WestRidge Equestrian, just north of Sioux Falls at the Crooks exit.
WestRidge has an
80x200' indoor arena, making it an ideal location for this clinic, with room for
a full-sized
dressage ring and auditor seating in the indoor arena.

Past riders in the DDE Freestyle clinics have gone on to be ranked in the top
ten of the US
Dressage Federation's Freestyle year end rankings, and auditors have developed
award
winning freestyles too from the knowledge gained at this clinic. Other riders
have
commented that riding regularly to one of Karen's CDs has helped them find a
steady
rhythm in their work. Others have ridden to music for the first time at a
clinic with Karen,
while others have been experienced at riding FEI Freestyles.

Karen is an accomplished dressage rider whose resume includes competing on the
Canadian Eventing team at the North American Young Riders Championships, as well
as
author of many articles published in Dressage Today, Chronicle of the Horse, and
other
national magazines. Karen's website, www.ApplauseDressage.com gives many
details of
her clients & philosophy. Karen does also offer music editing for freestyles as
an
additional service outside of the clinic for those that have ridden with her, as
well as
creating CDs for purchase with music that fits the specific rider's tempo and
likes.

If you would like to ride in the Freestyle Clinic, or come and audit, please
email
Joann@...

Hi you two!

I have attached an article about the April Beining Symposium and a registration form.  Would you please publish these in the March Contact and post them both on the website?

Can we also send them out in a blast e-mail to all NDA members?  This is also going to Region IV people, thanks to Sarah Patrick.  If you would like me to do the blast e-mail myself, I sure can.  Just let me know how to do that.

Also, Molly, you can pull my ad about the saddle from the Contact.  I think that I have it sold.

Thanks for everything, Karen
