Hi Kevin,

Wondering if you would have one spot per day. We have a young stallion who is
schooling second/third level and would love to have the opportunity to ride with
Mr. Schumacher. We're from Minneapolis, so we would only be interested if we
could ride twice. I've had several students ride with him in the YR clinics, but
have not had the opportunity to ride with him myself. Let me know what other
information you would like to have from us.

Thank you,

GRCHA Members and Friends:
Since we had the Illinois Horse Fair on our Calendar for Feb 29-March 2, I thought you should know this.  Thanks to Ann Bennett for alerting us.  Lora

2008 Illinois Horse Fair officially is canceled

Horse Fair was canceled this afternoon (Thursday, February 21) by Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Chuck Hartke. In a phone call to Horsemen¢s Council of Illinois, the director explained that public  safety issues associated with electrical distribution problems at the fairgrounds prompted the decision.

Horse Fair is attempting to contact vendors, participating exhibitors and prospective attendees through email, its web sites and press releases.

Sorry for any cross postings!  If you are a USDF member < 22 years of age in Region 4 and did not receive a copy of the blast e-news below, it is likely to mean that USDF does not have your email address or age as part of your membership information.  You can input the information on-line at www.usdf.org.

Adults: don't worry!  We had to beat some of the deadlines for the youth.  Your e-news will be my next project!  Please send me your suggestions on what to include.

USDF Regional E-News

February 22, 2008

Welcome from USDF Region 4 Director Sarah L. Patrick!

Happy 2008 to all riders under 22 years of age in Region 4 (IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, and SD or GMOs based in those states). Please share this e-mail with a parent or your trainer so they are in the loop, too. To help you with your riding goals, Region 4 has the following great volunteers:

  • Ellie Hardesty is the Youth Executive Board representative for Region 4. She is a FEI young rider from Olathe , KS, and competed on the Region 4 young riders team in 2006. The Youth Executive Board exists to "improve communication between the regional directors, coordinators, and youth members in each region; and to improve communication between youth in each region in an effort to help them be more aware of youth activities." You can e-mail Ellie at ncelliebear@....
  • Lloyd Landkamer is the Youth Council Coordinator for the region (llandkamer@..., 763-420-2280) and host of the Region 4 Junior/Young Rider Team Championship show in Mason City, IA, on June 27. The mission of the Youth Council is "to promote dressage to young equestrians while providing for the future of the sport." The council does this through educational opportunities, the youth art contest, promoting the high school dressage program (of which Region 4 has the most schools involved, thanks to active leadership in MN), rewarding good sportsmanship through the Shining Star Program, and other activities.
  • Nancy Gorton is the FEI Junior/Young Rider Coordinator for the region (capriole22@..., 816-695-3305 or 816-746-8175). The FEI Junior/Young Rider program has its' own qualifying requirements and culminates in the Junior Olympics for equestrian sport at the North American Junior Young Riders Championships that will be held July 29 - August 3 at the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, CO. The FEI Junior Preliminary test is the equivalent of Third Level, the FEI Junior Team and Individual tests are equivalent to Fourth Level, and the FEI Young Rider Team and Individual tests are equivalent to Prix St. Georges. Our goal is to send a team of four qualified FEI Juniors and four qualified FEI Young Riders to the competition to represent Region 4. To learn more about this program, please contact Nancy directly. Due to privacy issues, we do not have a list of junior/young riders we can contact to encourage participation. You, your parents, or your trainer need to initiate the contact first. Here is an example budget providing expenses above and beyond usual horse care/training for a NAJYRC bid to help you understand the financial commitment of such an endeavor and how/why your involvement in Region 4 fund raising helps our teams.

Shining Star Sportsmanship Award earned by Region 4's Elaine Wagner, LaCygne, Kansas

High school student, Elaine Wagner, served Region 4 as a groom for our riders at the 2007 NAJYRC. Her excellent attitude and support of all riders, trainers, and parents earned her a Youth Shining Star Award. Congratulations on a job well done!

Joint Clinic Invitation to Pony Club and Junior/Young Rider Clinic Open to All Levels of Riders

Pine Hill Farm in Kansas City, MO, will host a joint invitation Pony Club and Region 4 Junior/Young Rider clinic in March with 'S' judge, Sonja Vracko. The purpose of the clinic will be to help riders learn what the judge is looking for and to provide special help with riding to music that matches the horses' movements. Pony Club horse management activities will also be included! Contact Nancy Gorton at capriole22@..., 816-695-3305 or 816-746-8175 if you are interested. The dates will be selected to meet the needs of the majority of riders. Any unfilled slots will be open to adults, so let your parents and trainers/barn buddies, know too! Please contact Nancy before February 27.

'Tracking Up' Club

Do you want to help support the Region 4 Junior Olympic teams and maybe ride for one some day? If you are dreaming such dreams and working your way up the levels or looking for a horse to help get you there, send $10 to the Region 4 Tracking Up Club, 46846 SD Hwy. 38, Sioux Falls, SD 57107. Please let us know how to contact you (e-mail, phone or snail mail address). "Tracking Up" Club members will receive a club t-shirt (let us know what size you want and where to mail it to), a questionnaire about riding goals as they relate to the Junior Olympics and personalized feedback. As the Region 4 teams are chosen this year, members will receive e-mail updates on team selection and progress.

A Parent's Perspective

Your parents and trainer should be part of the decision-making team about whether you and your horse are ready to make a bid to compete for the North American Junior/Young Riders' Championships. FEI Junior rider, Krissy Wang from Nebraska, moved into the national scene for the first time last year, competing at both the National Junior Dressage Championships and NAJYRC on the Region 4 FEI Junior Team. Her mother, Tracie, shares "'A parent's perspective" with you. Please share it with your parents, as well.

Region 4 Scholarship Program

Fill out this simple form to be considered for up to $100 to advance your training, by allowing you to go to a clinic or other educational activity such as ademonstration ride for the learner judge program to take place in Minnesota or for the instructor certification program being put on in the Kansas City area.

Youth Survey

We want to make sure we know what Region 4 youth members want, what they are participating in, and what programs to share more information about so you are in the know. Please complete this survey so we can discuss how best to involve youth in Region 4 at the mid-year meeting. Deadline and address to mail the completed form to are listed on survey form.

Region 4 CDI Team Experience, May 16-18

Riders interested in working together as a team at an international level (CDI) competition prior to the North American Junior Young Riders' Championships are encouraged to enter Lamplight CDI Dressage at Lamplight and to notify Nancy Gorton (contact information above) to be included as part of a Region 4 team. Similar to NAJYRC, there will be team meetings and activities to support/cheer on riders. Riders who declare for NAJYRC teams for Region 4 who compete at the competition will be allowed on the Region 4 team for this competition and will receive a Region 4 shirt as part of that identification. There are no team awards and being on the team at this competition has no bearing on status toward earning a slot on the Region 4 NAJYRC teams. The purpose is to gain experience at a higher level competition and experience working together as a team. Entries for this competition open March 1 and close April 18. The prize list is available at www.dressageshowinfo.com. The competition will be held at the Lamplight Equestrian Center, Wayne, IL. The facility Web site is www.lamplightequestriancenter.com.

The deadlines to apply to host certain types of high performance
classes have changed somewhat this year, so I want to make sure
Region 4 members know what time period is covered by this round of
applications (e.g., July 1, 2008 thru December 31, 2009) and what
classes are covered (see below).

So far, USDF has received only a few applications to host such
classes in Region 4. If you know of shows you would recommend host
such classes (and there are special requirements of management),
please encourage your show managers (volunteer or paid) to get their
applications in for review at USDF by the March 31, 2008 deadline.

Thanks!

For Immediate Release Tuesday, February 19, 2008

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) announced a program that
offers Group Member Organizations (GMOs), local dressage clubs
affiliated with USDF, and Intercollegiate/Interscholastic
Organizations (IMOs), dressage clubs for students affiliated with
USDF, the opportunity to earn club points when they shop in the USDF

GMOs and IMOs earn points by encouraging members and members'
families and friends to shop online at www.usdf.org for merchandise.

When submitting an order, the shopper simply enters the code for the
GMO or IMO they would like to receive the points using the new online
shopping cart.

Points can then be redeemed by an official of the GMO or IMO, at one
dollar per point, to buy merchandise in the USDF store for year-end
awards, their educational library or as prizes and silent auction
items to raise money for their club.

Vicki Hammers-O'Neil will be the instructor for the USDF Instructor
Certification on April 12-13 and has agreed to extend her stay for a one day
clinic on Monday, April 14th. Vicki has been one of the Adult Camp instructors
in 2004 and 2006 and will be returning for the Adult Camp in June. Great
opportunity to spend some time with Vicki prior to Adult Camp! Save the date and
watch for more info as we finish up the details.

Sue Halasz is returning to Stoney Meadow on May 10 - 11. Sue's October clinic
with us was absolutely great and I'm excited to finally find a date to get Sue
back. Rides are $150 as I was able to get a fantastic airfare :) and can keep
the fees down. Watch for more info in the March Extension.

Happy riding!

USDF does co-sponsor some of the programming at My Horse University.  Since insurance sessions are ALWAYS popular at the USDF convention, I thought I would pass this on for all interested in the group!  (For all you K State fans, see where the speaker earned her PhD . . .),

Free Live Web Presentation on Reducing Risks on the Horse Farm, Monday, February 18, 2008 - Sign Up Today!

Whether or not you own, board, teach, or ride in an equine facility, you can help to decrease the potential risks at that barn.  Almost everyone can come up with a horror story of accidents, crashes or "near misses" at a stable from the past or present.  Often you will hear "boy I could see that one coming" or "that doesn't surprise me!" when a barn crash occurred.  Those crashes were probably at most, preventable, or at least could have been minimized in severity.  This presentation will help you identify and address potential physical and behavioral risks in your equine facilities.

Presenter Info:

Dr. Betsy Greene is an Associate Professor of Animal Science and Extension Equine Specialist in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont.  She was raised in Bedford, Massachusetts and received her A.A.S. and B.S. from Morehead State University, her M.S. from the University of Arizona, and her Ph.D. from Kansas State University.  She earned American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists certification in 1997.

Dr. Greene's responsibilities in the Equine Science Program include teaching a variety of courses including Introduction to Equine Science, Animal Science Career Seminar, Horse Barn Cooperative, Equine Enterprise Management, and Equine Industry Issues.  She also serves as a coach of the UVM Drill Team.

Her statewide extension programs have focused on preventative care and maintenance for horse health, safety, equine business, and pasture management.  She organizes the educational aspect of "Everything Equine" a 2-day equine educational event and consumer trade show that was awarded the "Non-Fair Agricultural Event" (International Association of Fairs and Expositions) and "Top Ten VT Event" (VT Chamber of Commerce).

She is the co-chair of the "HorseQuest Community of Practice" (www.extension.org/horses). Dr. Greene has served national organizations, including the United States Equestrian Federation (Safety Committee) the Equestrian Medical Safety Association, and the National Association of Agricultural Agents (Northeast Regional Vice Director). Dear Region 4 Group Members:

Please check the listing of GMO contacts from your GMO (below).  These are the people currently listed on the USDF web-site.  Since there are occassionally glitches and new officers/contacts may be missed, I wanted to make sure we get the information correct for all our GMOs. You may have different information on your club web-site than is shown below, so please do update the USDF listing for your organization.  Please contact the USDF GMO liaison (Jennifer Coyle, jcoyle@...) if there are any corrections needed or go on-line (http://www.usdf.org/clubs/gmo/gmo-officials.asp) to make the changes.

Subject: horse trailer for sale

I bought a new horse trailer last weekend. Old one needs a home:

mid 90's (need to check the title on exact year, I think 1996) Logan 2 horse slant for sale. Bumper pull, all steel, fresh paint a couple years ago-black&grey.
Walk in tack room w/saddle racks and hooks.
Good floor w/rubber mats.
Just had all wiring redone this week.
Good tires and breaks.
6 1/2 ft tall.
Would be great first trailer or extra for short hauls.

Not super tall, but I have put 2 warmbloods in it with no problems (16 hands tall each)

$2900 obo

Pass the word around!

Hi Everyone!
My name is Jamie, I am a member of the KU Equestrian Team. We are
trying to raise money for our small team of 8. The team is hoping to
do concessions at shows or get a class in their name, where part or
all of the benefits from that class go to the team. If anyone is
holding a show or has another idea for us, please, please let me know
if you are willing to help!! The team was started in 2004 and was just
taken over by our great new president who has completely turned things
around, we have a new coach, Christine Riley, and she has been
generous enough to build a barn and an indoor for us in Lawrence!
Unfortunately, the University does not see the benefits of our team so
we are looking to the local horse community to show their support!
Thank you,
Jamie
P.S. Donations in the form of money and supplies is also very welcome!!

I didn't see auditing listed.  Is it available for auditors?  Is there a fee?

Karen did a great freestyle for Brian and Lombardo 2yrs. ago--we were really pleased--she was really easy to work with--reasonable prices.  I'd encourage anyone thinking about doing a free style to either ride or audit

Karen Robinson, of www.ApplauseDressage.com will be doing a Freestyle
clinic near Sioux Falls, SD (2.5 hours north of omaha, 4.5 hours from
Mpls) the last weekend of March!!

Ms. Robinson's client list goes from those of us competing first, up
to NAYRC competitors, indeed, all the way up to Leslie Morse! The
weekend clinic features a friday night lecture, then private rides w/
each clinic rider on Saturday, and again Sunday...

Dakota Dressage & Eventing (DDE), the gmo presenting the clinic, is
very pleased to be receiving funding from The Dressage Foundation's
Dancing Horse Fund. Thank you to everyone who supports TDF, its
appreciated!

Rider spots are limited, so call if you are interested... Ms.
Robinson's new clients for music services are limited to those who
ride in a clinic with her this year. This is a great opportunity to
those who wish to ride at NAJC or NAYRC in 2009 to get their
freestyle put together... as well as adults of any age!! DDE put
together a clinic w/ Ms. Robinson 2 years ago, and saw four
competitive freestyles come from that clinic... it will be great fun
to have her back again!

World Games Foundation Announces New
Dressage Discipline Manager

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE:  January 22, 2008
LEXINGTON, KY— The World Games 2010 Foundation, Inc. today announced Lloyd Landkamer, of Hamel, Minnesota as the Dressage Discipline Manager for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, in addition to his current duties as the Para-Equestrian Discipline Manager.
Mr. Landkamer is one of eight managers responsible for planning, managing and directing the World Championship competitions in eight equestrian sports and communicating with the FEI and participating national federations.  The managers will work on a contract basis with the World Games 2010 Foundation, Inc.
"We are extremely pleased with the role Mr. Landkamer has played in the planning for our Para-Equestrian competition so far, and we are delighted that he will take on this additional role and we know that he will bring to it the same devotion and attention to detail," said 2010 Games Competition Director Kate Jackson.
"It is an honor to take on the role of Dressage Discipline Manager," said Mr. Landkamer.  "I am confident that, with the team of disciplines managers and our competition director Kate Jackson, we will produce the best competition environment possible for the 2010 Games."
Mr. Landkamer holds a master’s degree in Economics and undergraduate work in animal nutrition. He is owner and operator of Brandywine Farm, a dressage equestrian facility in Hamel, MN. He has won USDF Horse of the Year awards at various levels and actively breeds quality sport horses that have won Year End Awards with national ranking within USDF. Mr. Landkamer has extensive involvement with all levels of management of equestrian events around the United States, serving as management and secretary. In addition, he has served as secretary at many prestigious events such as the Pan American Games and the North American Young Rider Competitions as well as management and secretary for CDI competitions.
He holds license with the United States Equestrian Federation as a C1 and C2 Steward, "R" rated Technical Delegate. He is also an FEI Chief Steward with international experience, most recently the Central American Games. Within the USA, Lloyd has officiated at Devon, Wellington CDI/W and many Regional Championships around the country.
Mr. Landkamer has served as panelist for the USEF Dressage Technical Delegates’ Forum many times, and as panelist for the USEF Show Secretary forum. He serves on several committees with the USDF and has been committee chair for education for USDF.  USDF has awarded him Show Secretary of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year.  He was recently selected by USEF as one of the Top Ten Show Secretaries of 2007.
Mr. Landkamer joins seven other discipline managers from both Central Kentucky and around the world.  They are as follows:  Driving, Susan Gilliland, of Dunellen, FL;  Endurance, Art Priesz, of Ivanhoe MN;  Eventing, Jane Atkinson, of Stamping Ground, KY;  Reining; Brad Ettleman, of Denver, CO; Vaulting, Kersten Klophaus, of Wermelskirchen, Germany; Show Jumping, David Distler of Norwalk, CT, and Hugh Kincannon of Lexington, KY.
The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park, are the world championships of the eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), and are held every four years.  The Games have never before been held outside of Europe; nor have all eight disciplines ever previously been held together at a single site— both firsts that will be achieved at the Kentucky Horse Park. The 2010 Games are expected to have a statewide economic impact of $150 million. It is anticipated that more than 600,000 spectators will attend the 16-day competition.
