Sonja Vracko will be at Pine Hill Farm to teach on November 16th and November 17th. I would encourage any open level, AA, Junior or Young Rider to take advantage of this opportunity to work with an FEI "O" judge. She is fabulous.

Please note also that all prize lists in omnibus listings for the Regional Championships are marked as "unofficial". The lead times required by omnibus listings for the next show season necessitate that they are only tentative listings.
Only "official" prize lists contain all of the approved information for a given Championship show. Official prize lists are always available on the USDF website and are usually approved in the June/July time frame. The USDF or host organization should always be contacted for the Official prize list.

I am sharing this with the group as there is always a question or two (or twenty) about where to find show information or why information is in one location but not another.
There are two published omnibi (that I know of) including shows in Region 4. Neither are produced or financially benefit the region (as the financial risk is born by those who produce them). One is the Central USA Omnibus (info below) which is mailed to all USDF members in Region 4 at the cost of the show management company that produces it and using a mailing list they purchase. The mailing list is usually drawn on the previous year memberships (e.g., 2007 members are mailed the 2008 Central USA Omnibus) because there is often a long delay in GMO memberships for the coming year getting sent to USDF. This omnibus also includes a number of shows in Regions 2 and, I believe, some in Region 3. Shows pay for the pages used and advertiser space is also available. Any show can opt to use this marketing service and prize lists are also put on a commercial web-site. The contact information for this omnibus is given, below.
The second omnibus I know of is for the Central States Dressage & Eventing Association, the largest GMO in Region 4. Again, any show can opt to pay to have a show (or event) included and advertising space is available for purchase. Nancy Porter is the publisher of this omnibus and you can reach her at nancyporter8@aol.com. Shows advertised there are also, I believe, then given CSDEA approval toward their year end awards program (please confirm with CSDEA about this). This omnibus includes a section for schooling shows, too. It often includes many of the shows in the upper half of Regions 2 and 4.
Is either source 100% complete? No. Some licensed shows do not pay to advertise in these omnibi. If you want a complete list of licensed shows in Region 4 you can check the USEF web-site, the USDF web-site or the Region 4 yahoogroup web-site.
Does either source provide the 'final' prize list for the USDF Region 4 Championships? No. The omnibi are published during the winter, long before the FINAL USDF prize list for regional championships are approved. This caused many competitors confusion this year, so please, if your goal is to ride at Regionals in Mason City in 2008, please use the USDF web-site as THE FINAL SOURCE for the prize list about that competition. I believe the web-site for the Central USA Omnibus will also have the prize list updated at some point and, of course, I'll post the USDF version when available. Still, you are always safe going back to the source, which for GAIG/USDF regional championships, is USDF.
All shows in Region 4 can have their prize list included for free on the Region 4 yahoogroup web-site. Just post the file under FILES > LICENSED (or schooling) COMPETITIONS or email it to me and I will post it for you with a calendar reminder. For those of you who compete also in Region 2, it produced its' own omnibus last year and that is available on-line.
Gosh, it just seems like we just finished up the show season and now we find ourselves in the midst of getting ready for next year - booking judges, reserving facilities, planning class lists, and updating the pages in the Central USA Omnibus. This publication goes to over 7,000 competitors and will give your show the most complete coverage possible. NEW for 2008, a bulk e-mail reminder to riders about your upcoming show and the approaching closing date. This e-mail will be sent on the first of the month and will highlight upcoming shows and dates so that riders will focus on your show. We will help you make sure that your prize list is as complete as possible to meet the new USDF and USEF prize list submission guidelines.
If you had your prize list published in the Omnibus last year, you will find your prize list posted at www.dressageshowinfo.comfor editing and review. We ask that you simply make the changes directly on the pages (using red ink is especially helpful) or on additional sheets. This way it is easier for us to spot any changes from the prior year and get the copy back to you for editing and final approvals. Please include a fax number so we can make this as speedy as possible.
If you are adding your show to the Omnibus - Welcome!I have included some pages to act as guideline in setting up your prize list that I hope you will find helpful and a guide to what information to include.
The fee will again be $275 per show (2 pages per) and the time frame is to have it out in plenty of time for the early March shows. If you are in need of additional pages, just let us know and we will reserve them for you. These additional pages are discounted to $100 each.So please have your page reservations and first update into us no later than November 15th. Include in this will be free posting of your prize list and contact information at www.dressageshowinfo.com.
This year we are offering the listing of your prize list on the Internet on our web site – DressageShowInfo.com.During the past show season, DressageShowInfo.comhad an average of up to 25,000 direct requests per month and nearly total 100,000 hits.Wow - what better way to get the information to your competitors and customers! So when you get requests for additional prize lists or entry forms, just direct them to that site. The class list we will already have from your Omnibus submission.Just let us know that you want to participate when you submit your Omnibus reservations.
Many of the clubs, organizations, and show committees have requests for the class list from new members, potential competitors, or officials. If you feel you will need additional copies to handle these requests after the mailing has gone out, please reserve these additional copies early so that we can have them available to send to you or your organization. These additional copies will be billed to you at an “at cost” basis. But please, please order if you feel you will need extra - because after the initial mailing, there usually is none left to send out.

Thanks, Rita, for your thoughtful response to the question on the yahoogroup listserve for GMO Presidents (really, open to all GMO leaders and interested parties). I am sharing it with the Region 4 listserve, as well. No GMO is immune to having problems arise, so it is good to think ahead and have some strategies to help resolve problems. The GMO Prez listserve is also a great opportunity to ask for help from other GMOs who have been there/done that. It's not all dealing with problems. It also is used to share successes and other helpful tips. I have learned much from the wisdom of others through that listserve and have enjoyed getting to know many of these people face-to-face at the GMO Council meetings at the USDF Convention (another great source of networking).

When I took over as President here in Knoxville, our club had gone through a terribly difficult time with officer resignations, back biting, all manner of feuding, crying, yelling, etc. My goal for the first year was simply to get everyone working on the same page and enjoying the horses. We also had treasurer problems with ineptness (I'll call it that rather than dishonesty). The people who created the most ruckus had left but some with very tender feelings remained and were just waiting for another feud. My way of handling it was to simply refuse to be drawn into taking sides and to be friendly and fair to all sides involved. I was lucky enough to have a couple of board members who were able to help me with that. By going out of my way to make everyone feel needed and involved and by making NO decisions without board involvement everyone began to come around. It took two
years before harmony became the "matter of course" for the club. When someone came to me in an acrimonious mood, I did not take it on as MY problem and was able to defuse the issue by being pleasant, refusing to take sides, and bringing the issue before the board for final decision. Now, the mood for meetings is one of everyone being able to state their opinion (which may differ vastly from the majority) and we all agree to disagree and the majority rules. This is probably presented a little more simplistically than it actually was, but rather than trying to force a solution it worked to have everyone involved and over time harmony rules. We have actually been able to solve some LONG standing issues and have moved forward. Is everything the way one person might want it? NO, but everyone seems content with the majority rule situation.

Okay, so I have yet another question. ;) I was reading through some of the requirements and I noticed that the person must attend all meetings, especially the annual meeting. Now, what happens if that person does not have the funds to attend for some reason? (I've actually always wondered about that. Because then it would seem to me that the only people who can always attend and participate are those who have a lot of money. I know quite a few people who either can't get the time off from work or don't have the money available--due to being horse poor.)
Are there people who are leaving specific committees/councils? Are there ones that are impossible to get on? Is there an existing list of people waiting to be placed on a committe/council from our region?
Sorry to pummel you with questions. I find it interesting and would love to be involved, but need to
understand the requirements and possible issues a little bit better. :)

I would also like to mention that each Council and Committee
Coordinator position is a 12 month volunteer gift to USDF and the Region. While I wait to hear back how many/which of the 2007 regional coordinators in Region 4 would like to continue in the position for another term, I also want to encourage 'throwing the net wide' and finding new ideas, expanding representation across the Region, and allowing volunteers who have done the jobs for many years a chance to 'take a break' and refuel (or just RIDE!). So, my request to you is to NOMINATE someone (includes yourself) for a volunteer position for the Region. I will review each nomination seriously and will need contact information so I can talk to the nominee. As you read the Council reports (Committee members are appointed by their Chairs and not by Regional Directors) if you think of someone or personally find the work of that Council of interest, please let me know! BOG Agenda/Council and Committee Reports now posted on USDF Web site
The agenda for the Board of Governors (BOG) meeting that will take place at the 2007 Adequan/USDF Annual Convention is now posted on the USDF Web site. In addition, reports from all of the USDF
Councils and Committees, which will be meeting during the convention, have also been posted. Both the BOG Agenda and the USDF Council and Committee Reports can be found by going to www.usdf.org and clicking on the 2007 Adequan/USDF Annual Convention graphic, then looking under the “Business Discussions” (http://www.usdf.org/convention/business-discussion.asp). We hope that this information will be helpful in preparation for the convention! We look forward to seeing you in Orlando!
Great question, Leslie. The main requirement is the willingness to
serve the Region. Ideal regional coordinators provide input to their
Councils about how Council actions would affect Region 4 (in a good or
bad way) and share information back to Region 4 about what is going on
in their Council, so they can receive appropriate input from throughout
the region. Most of this work is done through email and the occassional
telephone conference and then there are meetings to attend at the USDF
annual convention. It is likely in 2008 that regional coordinators who
need to sign off on grant awards (adult ed, youth) will be asked to
sign a conflict of interest statement for USDF, to help protect the
goals of and fairly distribute the funds from the grant programs. A
Regional Coordinator has to be Participating Member of USDF and is
asked to attend the annual meeting (for 2008 that will be in Denver,
CO).--Sarah
One resource I encourage people to read is
http://www.usdf.org/CouncilCommittee/Handbook.asp as it provides a lot
more information about C/C involvement.
What are the requirements? I saw a reference in the mail, but are there specific details on a USDF web page that I can refer to?
Thanks!

As you read the Council reports (Committee members are appointed by their Chairs and not by Regional Directors) if you think of someone or personally find the
work of that Council of interest, please let me know! This is your Region and your input is what makes it work!

BOG Agenda/Council and Committee Reports now posted on USDF Web site
The agenda for the Board of Governors (BOG) meeting that will take place at the 2007 Adequan/USDF Annual Convention is now posted on the USDF Web site. In addition, reports from all of the USDF Councils and Committees, which will be meeting during the convention, have also been posted.
I have an opportunity to bring Sonja Vracko back for a clinic the 24th and 25th of November. I would like to know if anyone has any interest in riding in a clinic with her and if so will those dates work for you?
I will need to book her soon, so please let me know asap if you are interested.
Kindly,
Nancy Harrison Gorton,
Owner/Manager Pine Hill Farm 8000 NW Mace Road Kansas City, MO 64152
Please note additional GRAND PRIX ranking earned by a Region 4 member (Jami Kment) before Contingent Fee was sold to a new owner in Region 1 (where the ranking is showing up in the USDF system). Thanks, Cynthia, for sharing the word!
Also, my search by region did not pull up the many Dressage Sport Horse awards earned in Region 4, as those awards are not tracked by Region. Please do take a look at the USDF web-site to find the exciting sport horse breeder results of horses you know! I'll see if I can get a 'run' of the data by region of owner by the USDF IT staff . . ..

Hi Sarah.
Thanks for the USDF Region 4 results. I'm doing a story for the Contact about NDA members who are ranked, and it was a good "fact check" document for me.
I did notice one thing you might want to correct. Because Jami Kment sold Contingent Fee before the end of the competition year, he appears in Region 1 and, therefore, isn't captured when you do an awards search on Region 4.
Jami and Fee are ranked 23rd out of 127 nationally at Grand Prix. A nice accomplishment that you might want to add to your table.
Thanks again for the note.
Cynthia

Hi All, I am putting out some feelers for a Young Rider horse. Do

I sent this to posted competition management contacts for 2008 shows in Region 4 on the USEF or USDF web-sites. In case any of the USDFRegion4 list serve members are contemplating show manager/show secretary duties or are the friend who nudges the manager/secretary with on-line news, I thought I would share this with you, as well. Please check to see that the shows you attend are listed and don't be shy about posting the shows on the yahoogroup calendar or filing a prize list. Let's help keep everyone informed about what is going on in Region 4. Thanks! -- Sarah
I hope this email finds you doing well and anticipating a great 2008 competition year!
For
ease, I thought I would share the current list of calendar year 2008 competitions in Region 4 (MN, ND, SD, NE, IA, KS, and MO) currently posted on either the USDF or the USEF web-sites (see attached).
I know there are some competitions from 2007 that are not yet appearing on the 2008 calendar (plus the USEF web-site competitions calendar 'pull down' bar is missing ND as a state, so the Bismarck dressage shows aren't showing up, either). Please take a look, too, for accuracy in the contact information for your competitions. Sometimes email addresses and/or web-sites can be incorrectly input or volunteer show management contacts will change without the web-site being updated. I plan to provide a list of the competitions in Region 4 at the Region 4 meetings at the USDF Convention, November 28 - December 2 in Orlando, FL so want to make sure the information I share on your competitions is correct!
I wanted to alert you to a few opportunities, as well:
(2) USDF Adult Team Competitions (may be up to three in a Region; must apply. Applications will be reviewed at the Region 4 meetings at the USDF annual convention). Info-- http://www.usdf.org/Programs/AdultTeam/index.asp. Application form-- http://www.usdf.org/pdf/AdultTeam/HostApplication.pdf. Please send completed applications to me prior to 11/20 so I can have copies made for the Region 4 meetings.
(4) Tim Griest is finishing his year as the Competition Management Coordinator for Region 4 (thank you, Tim!).
I am looking for nominations for someone to represent Region 4 on the USDF Competition Management Council. The 2007 goals of that Council are available http://www.usdf.org/CouncilCommittee/CompetitionManagement/index.asp and Tim mentioned the Council mainly operated through a few conference calls this past year. My hopes are that the Region 4 Competition Management Coordinator will share information of interest to competition managers/secretaries in the Region throughout the year. If you are interested in serving in this position, please contact me. You do need to be a USDF Participating Member and plan to attend the 2008 USDF convention in Denver, CO to serve.
(5) You may post prize lists for free on the Region 4 yahoogroup web-site. Just go to www.yahoogroups.com/group/USDFRegion4 and look under FILES. You can also post show dates/locations (or dates of entry closing) on the yahoogroup calendar, too. This is one way to market your competitions in the Region.
Do you have any suggestions for me?
Thank you for all you do to ensure quality dressage competitions in Region 4!!
The agenda is posted on the Region 4 site under FILES > Annual Convention, though I would imagine it isn't in the level of detail necessary to answer your questions about proposed resolutions, as they have not been published yet.
As information comes forward I will be sure to post it on the Region 4 yahoogroup.
Cheers,
Sarah

I
think this is a great opportunity for Participating Members to share your views with the people who will be voting on your behalf at the USDF convention. My thanks to the USDF office for making it easier for members to contact their PM delegates!
During the 2007 Adequan/USDF Annual Convention, numerous issues are addressed in which the input and opinions of USDF members are taken into consideration. This is particularly the case during the Board of Governors meeting, at which time many issues are brought forth. It is the primary responsibility of the
PM Delegates that have been elected in each region to represent the wishes of their regional members. If as a USDF member you would like to share your thoughts or concerns on any issues with the elected PM Delegates representing your region, you may now do so through the USDF Web site. Simply go to the Web site link below and click on your region number. A listing of your region's PM Delegates, as well as their e-mail addresses will appear.

Attached please find the DRAFT region 4 report for the USDF annual convention materials and also the DRAFT Board of Governors Agenda for the meeting. Both files will be temporarily posted on the Region 4 yahoogroup under FILES > ANNUAL CONVENTION.
I know that I had to truncate many, many good things that have happened in the Region this year, so please let me know if there is something you would really like to have added in the report for your Council, GMO, etc.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Board DID hear you when feedback was provided on the way the budget was handled at the convention last year.
Please do take some time to review/discuss the proposed budget with your GMO, PM delegates, etc. so YOUR input helps USDF continue to improve and live our mission:
'Dedicated to education, recognition of achievement, and promotion of dressage.' The USDF Strategic Plan's BIG, AUDACIOUS GOAL is to be the 'MUST JOIN' organization for all dressage and related horse enthusiasts'.

The USDF Executive Board has implemented a new procedure for budget review. This procedure allows additional opportunity for discussion before the budget comes to a vote at the
USDF Board of Governors (BOG) meeting during the Adequan/USDF Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida.
View information regarding changes to this year's budgeting process and review the preliminary USDF 2008-2009 Budget at the following link: http://www.usdf.org/AboutUs/Financials/
We look forward to seeing you in Orlando at the Adequan/USDF Annual Convention.
Best Regards,

Many thanks to Linda Landers who lead the fundraising effort to
memorialize the fact that Region VI IS the 'Birthplace of USDF'. I
have just posted a picture of that brick and a certificate of
