Fall Vaccines Fall is a popular time of the year to participate in activities such as showing or trail riding with our equine companions. However, it's important for your horse's safety to update and booster certain vaccines. You’re cordially invited to attend the next Slads
symposium held at Devinwood Farm near Millstadt,
IL on September 22 from 12 noon
to approx.4 pm. This is a Slads sponsored event and is your chance to take
advantage of a great learning opportunity and get to know some of the
professionals in your region who are generously donating their time, expertise,
facility and knowledge. The symposium is modeled after the annual USDF
symposium held each year at the National USDF conference. You’ll be
treated to wonderful instruction, demonstration horses and riders and some interesting
and engaging dialogue from among the panelists and audience. The topics for
this symposium are especially intriguing as they deal with relationships
between horse, rider and trainer. Not to be missed.
See attached for the registration form. Hope to see you
there! Michele.
PS. I know for many of you, traveling might hinder you.
Nonetheless, any feedback on the registration form and any comments you may
have with regard to broadening interest and attendance for events like these is
greatly appreciated.
I provided earlier a shorter outline of the USDF Adult

Just wanted to share the meeting minutes from last night’s conference call with you. Please let me know any GMO educational programs that I can add to the list on point 2.
Thanks and have a great day. Michele.

Here are our other goals for 2007
1. Prepare an education planning document for the web site. Lisa prepared an excellent planning document which we discussed last night. Have a blow up of it at the convention is a great idea and making it a hand out will also be beneficial.
2. Improve access and information sharing of GMO educational programs. We touched on this last night. Thank you Holly and Michele for e-mailing what has been going on in your region. I think that we should continue to work on this and figure out a way to disseminate this info for everyone to use. If you could get information to me regarding what is happening in your region, then a master list can be generated. I see in my notes that I was supposed to put out something in region Enews to ask for topics to add to the list. I will work on that with Kathie. We can also look at grant programs as a source for ideas.
3. Identify recourse for educational expertise-This ties in with Number 2.
4. Re-implement council and GMO communications. This should come out of implementing number 2 and 3.
5. Revamp University program criteria- DONE
6. Continue to look into Adult educational grant guidelines .As far as I know, this had been put on hold by the executive board. Is this still correct, Kathie? I still have the article about How to write a grant and would like to do something with it.
Maybe put it in "Connections"?
7. Explore the idea of an awards program for recognizing innovative educational programming within GMO's.
We were going to look at the criteria used for the GMO newsletter guidelines so come up with a way of choosing a winner.
I have a sponsor for this program. We just need to establish some criteria.
8. Continue to add Adult camp themes to the Adult camp guidelines. After last night's discussion, it sounds like we may be revamping this whole camp concept.
We spent a lot of time this year discussing the Adult clinics. At this point, we a looking at two possibilities for the years 2009-2010. Long lining combined with riding or having a clinician and judge work together to assess how a rider can improve the movements. Kathie was going to check on who might be available for these programs through USDF. Please keep thinking of ideas along these lines.
We also spent a considerable amount of our time this year on picking topics for this year's convention. I think that the educational programs for this year will be excellent.
Thanks, Maggie, for sharing this information. Congratulations, Ann, Jeff, Amador, and Alvarador!
It is really fantastic to see so many horses, owners, riders, trainers from Region 4 moving into the various national championship programs. How exciting!

Ann qualifed both her boys last year for the 4 y/o championships but a freak injury kept Ann out of the saddle and she could not compete. Quite an accomplishment to qualify both boys last year then back that up by qualifying Amador this year with Alvarador as an alternate.
Both geldings were imported by Ann and Jeff as weanlings with Ann doing all the traning with her boys. I have come to know and respect Ann as she has been a long time student of Amy Larson and regularly hosts clinics with Amy at her farm. Ann works hard and is very dedicated as shown by her results. I wanted Ann to get her due applause along with all the other Region 4 qualifiers.

Thanks, Michele, for participating in the Adult Education conference call, for posting the notes so quickly, and for sharing with the council the SLADS Trainer's Symposia you created. All Region 4 GMOs--let's be sure to send Michele information about the adult education activities taking on through GMOs across the entire region so she can share them with the Adult Ed Council, as I know there are a lot of things going on, such as dressage camps, adult team competitions, book clubs, joint GMO meetings, etc..
Also, did you guys see the GMO roundtable information in the September issue of the USDF Connection? I really want to compliment the magazine and the author for this article, full of suggestions on a huge variety of topics from GMOs across the nation, including several quotes from Region 4. I noticed information from Dakota Dressage & Eventing, Eastern Iowa Dressage & CTA, Great River Classical
Horsemanship Association, and the Kansas Dressage & Eventing Association . . . (hope I did not miss any of our GMOs . . . if so, I do apologize!).
Cheers,

Joint Meeting of two Iowa GMO's. The first joint EIDEA (Eastern Iowa Dressage and Eventing Association) and GRCHA (Great River Classical

After self-introductions and discussions of horses, all enjoyed a salad and dessert meal hosted by GRCHA. GRCHA members present were Ann and John Bennett (Ann Bennett GRCHA Treasurer), Judy and Art Duke (GRCHA Secretaries), Lyn and Charlie Conrad, their grandchild Devlin, Courtney Conrad, Stephanie DeVibiss, April Crossland, Mary Doyle, Becky Hassman (GRCHA Vice-President), Genelle Royer (GRCHA Education Adviser), Martha Wick, Pat Pollpeter (GRCHA President), and Lora

After the meal, Ann Bennett explained the history of Vaquero horsemanship, exhibited and explained Vaquero gear. Ann aboard her Arabian gelding Soloman, Courtney Conrad on the Arabian mare Kalika, Roger Asby on Biscuit, and Lori Field on her quarter horse King demonstrated Vaquero style riding, cutting and roping with the Bennett’s fat, sleek Angus steers. At the end of the demonstration Nan Barta presented Ann with a gift bag from EIDEA.

I love this horse and wish I could keep him he is so very sweet. . .. Very supple and can stretch down or come up easily. He had a year of solid training in Germany. He is over 17 hands and we keep forgetting to measure exactly. However, he is elegant so he doesn't seem so tall when in the ring. He is qualified for training level at the Regional Championships also. He won every class we entered him in but we didn't begin showing him until June as he didn't get here until the first of May." WOW!!
The list of 7-9 year old horses who qualified for the USEF National Developing Horse Championships has been updated, too. Congratulations to Nancy Gorton of Pine Hill Farm in Kansas City, MO and her stallion, Don Perry (who was ridden by daughter Lauren (a junior) at NAJYRC the past TWO years). Don Perry is currently ranked 3rd among the 7-9 year old horses. Nancy, as many of you know, is the Region 4 FEI jr/yr Coordinator and was recently the Chef d'equipe for our two Region 4 teams at NAJYRC.
The whole list of horses invited to the national championships for 7- 9 year old horses is available at http://www.usef.org/documents/disciplines/dressage/Final%20Dev% 20Horse%20Rankings%208.21.07.pdf. To my knowlege, Perry is the only developing horse who has taken a junior to NAJYRC (most often what you find is that many NAJYRC horses are former Pan Am or other IHP horses who now have the career of teaching and bringing up young FEI riders). In this case we have a junior and a developing horse moving to the highest ranks together. When he is competed for the developing horse program he is ridden by their trainer, Yvonne Barteau. Still, I think this says a lot for both Lauren and Perry!
I also talked with Lloyd Landkamer today who is working on trying to get more qualifying shows/clearer qualifying criteria to help more Region 4 horses get qualified in the future!
Rochefort in the 5-year old division, is owned by Beth Springer of
Parkville, Missouri. Leonessa, owned by Ricki Brozman, DVM of Kansas,
qualified for the 6-year old division, and will be ridden by
Christopher Hickey, double gold medal winner in both team and
individual competitions at the Pan Am Games. Ready or Not, owned by
Holly Neary, is third alternate in the 5-year old division.

The Finals Ranking List of horses invited to the Markel/USEF
Dressage Young Horse Championships September 14-16 at the Kentucky
Horse Park was updated yesterday and ranks Linda Landers' 4 year old
horse, Fuerst Consul, 10th in the Nation! Congratulations, Linda!
Linda is owner of Landers Farm in Independence, MO and, of course,
the immediate past Regional Director for Region 4 (man, does this
put the pressure on my horses -- ha, ha!).
If there are other Region 4 horses/owners/riders on the list that I
didn't recognize please let me know. Here is the current list of
horses invited from among the 4, 5, and 6 year olds.

The 2007 Adequan®/USDF Annual Convention
Region 3 is pleased to welcome you to the greater Orlando area, home to a collection of world class theme parks - and home to Walt Disney World® Theme Parks - great locations for water sports and fishing, PGA golf courses, the headwaters of the amazing Everglades National Park, and historical sites that will guide you through the history of the native Seminole Indians and South Americans who lived here.
Orlando is also home to many horse farms and breeders as well as some major horse shows. Plenty to see and do - and we hope you will join us. We're excited to say that the schedule has been arranged so that you'll have time for horse health education and time for relaxing and taking in the sun and the sites.
We look forward to learning how best to care for our horses and sharing a frosty beverage with each of you.
Click the link below, view the invitation, and when you click “Yes”, you will be taken directly to online registration. If you cannot attend, please click “No” on the invitation, and let us know why – so we can continue to improve our convention to meet your needs.

Congratulations to the newly elected (and very experienced) PM delegates and Youth Executive Board member for Region 4! PM delegates serve for one year, starting at the annual convention.
I do want to share my appreciation for the work Megan Ward did as our Nominations Coordinator and to thank the many other nominees for their willingness to throw their names in the hat! Believe me, we do have additional volunteer activities to assist the Region's growth and development, so your help is still most welcomed. Please contact me to learn more.
Thanks, too, to Miki Christopherson, the Chair of the USDF Nominations Council, who we are very proud to have in Region 4.
Cheers,

Just to wet your appetite for the USDF annual convention in Orlando, FL, here are some of the educational sessions to look forward to . . .. These are topics I do hear from Region 4 members about regularly, so I know there is interest in learning these materials and bringing them back home. This is just a small sample.
