"Hurricane Katrina
What can you do? Rather than attempt to keep up with the constantly
updated information about equine rescue, we'll refer you to the
rescue organizations' and informational Web sites.
Thousands of horses were turned loose to fend for themselves when
Katrina approached. The need for feed, halters, trailers and
temporary homes for thousands of horses is great. The horses may be
ill, injured or otherwise traumatized. Our San Antonio area members
remember well the care that flood victims needed in 1998 and 2002.
Like them, you can help. According to the bulletin from USEF Friday
afternoon, emergency stabling in neighboring states was what is
needed most. Plenty of folks have offered to take in equine
evacuees, including Don Jones of San Antonio Rose Palace, who has
offered 350 stalls. Foster homes for people, horses and pets are
particulary needed in states bordering the affected areas. Trucks
left Saturday morning from Jackson, Miss., to go to the southern
part of the state to pick up horses. Foster homes are needed now in
the northern part of the state. Register at USEF and MsEDA. The
links can be found in the box at left.
Stolen Horse International has established a link, Katrina's Missing
Pets, on its Web site, www.netposse.com. The purpose of this link is
to centralize Internet efforts in reuniting horses and owners. The
service is free.
If you are bringing livestock into Texas, you need to alert the
Texas Animal Health Commission on its 24-hour hot line, (800) 550-
8242. The commission is also keeping track of potential foster homes.
Mississippi Eventing and Dressage Association is urging members to
offer foster care and to check in and let everyone know you're OK.
They are looking for news on Jodi Waldrip of Faye Road in Pass
Christian, Miss. Contact information is in the box at left.
For now, we have heard that some members in northern Mississippi and
in Folsom, La., have had property damage but are OK. As more
information becomes available, it will be posted. E-mail
web.groom@..., and she'll do her best that the
information is up to date.
The Omnibus deadline for horse show pages has been extended for
shows affected by the hurricane. Deadline for them is Oct. 1. Send
information to Kat Kyle rather than Laura Freeman. Kat has heard
Laura is OK but she really does not need to be working on the
Omnibus at this time.
