Hi there USC Ultimate alumni, attached below is a letter from the Hellions. Read it, enjoy it and send your best to them (with cash/check/or love).
-Dave
-----------------------------------
Hey alums,
Remember back when USC didn't have a women's ultimate team? Remember when we went to college Regionals in Colorado with 9 players and came back with only 7 healthy ones? Those days were great because we might not have won many games, but we had a hell of a good time.
I'm proud to say that a few years later, we're continuing the tradition of having fun and partying hard. But we've also started to play competitively. We've won big games. We've won tournaments. We're ranked 14th in the country. And, for the first time in our history, WE'RE GOING TO NATIONALS.
This is exciting. Unfortunately, taking 23 players and coaches to Columbus is expensive and we need help with the costs. Here is an approximate cost breakdown of how much it costs one player to go to Nationals:
Add it all up, multiply by 24, and you get an idea of how much money this tournament will cost us. So, with sincere gratitude for establishing this program, we're asking for your help to Columbus so we can finish what you started. Monetary donations are great, but we're also willing to earn our money so if you have any fund-raising suggestions for us, please let me know.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please send a check (made out for USC Women's ultimate) with the attached form to:
Lyon University Center
1026 W. 34th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90089-2500
Otherwise, email chenas@... with any of your fund-raising ideas.
USC's putting together a team for Potlatch. If you are interested in playing for that team, please email me and Riley ( riley.marsh@... ). We should know soon whether it's going to happen.

I'm already on an LA-based team, so I'm basically THERE already. SO excited! Will you be playing? If not, I'll give you a head's up and you should come out for some evening throwage. The parties are usually killer. Venus and I will be caravaning up from Portland.

I sent out that article offering a different perspective on warming up, which believe it or not, is different for many players. Some people warm up to increase performance. And some warm up to prevent injuries. I tend to do a little bit of both.
It might be possible that increased performance and injury prevention have some kind of connection--wouldn't it make sense that if your muscles are strong (not weakened by laborious stretching) and performing the way they should be (during play time and conditioning) that you might not be as prone to injuries?
I think the major strength of this kind of warm-up and dynamic stretching is that it contributes to **warm muscles**---which also helps in injury prevention.
Take it or leave it, it is just another way of going about warming up if you are especially interested in increasing performance. If you think somebody on this listserve might benefit from it, feel free to post an article that focuses on warm-ups to prevent injuries.

This article misses the point completely. We do not stretch before practice so that our muscles perform at 100% and draw maximum power from the very start. Personally, I care very little whether I'm performing at 100% for the first drill. Regardless, what gets us closer to that target is warming up (such as jogging), which this article supports.
The reason we've been taught to stretch is to prevent injuries. If stretching reduces the power output from my muscles while also reducing the chance that those muscles will get hurt, I would stretch every time, especially before practice. I have read research pointing in each of three directions: stretching prevents injuries, stretching does not affect injuries, and stretching either causes or increases the chance of injuries. I have also seen research that says that repetitive extension, such as during active warm ups, can increase the chance of injuries. I haven't seen conclusive data on either subject, but this article sheds no light on these issues.

I'm just going to interpret all this as "warming up is bad." No more warm ups! Sweet.

until dinner time anyway. If we started at 4 we'd have to drive home
in the dark, old people don't like that. :-)

I don't have a lot of say here, since I'm not going to be there, but I'm assuming that they couldn't get Cromwell since it's homecoming and ultimate always gets the shaft, and I'm sure the kids did a lot of work putting this together. Might be nice to appreciate everything they set up and go down and go beat them up a little on the field, as good alumni do.

Hey Sexy Alumni.
The USC GhettoHot vs Awesome Alumni Game will be at
1:00pm 11/2/08 Cal State Long Beach Fields
The fields are located by the Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach.
It's best to take the 405 South to the Palo Verde exit. You can pay for parking in the lots just south of Atherton or find free street parking on Palo Verde.
(I know what you're thinking. We tried our best to get fields in LA. It's not that easy. If you don't like it, next year you can be in charge!)
We'll play the first game as alumni vs students and then mix teams and play some more games.
Bring a light and a dark and all that jazz.
See you there!
GO TROJANS FUCK THE HUSKIES!

Won't be able to make it, cancelled my trip to LA. Although, I will say that even if I had been down there for the homecoming game, I doubt very much I would have been able to go to Long Beach for an ultimate game.
Kick some ass alums, miss you all...or, at least, some of you.

Maybe it's better if we spend our $ supporting the teams. They finally got USC to approve Discraft as a vendor so they are selling some super sweet all cardinal and gold discs with Tommy T on them. I think for $12.

Is anyone interested in getting Skull 'EM jerseys? It could be a fun
