Re: question

Sorry, to kick this up again, and I'm new to the
club, but I completely agree about traffic lights etc.
The restrictions placed on cars are there mostly for
the safety of others. Bicycles do not create nearly
the same danger for pedestrians and othe vehicles as
cars do.
It is somewhat unpopular (and for me,
unheard of) to say that bikes should in fact enjoy
greater freedoms on-road than do motorists. Why is this?
I've heard people say "Well, you can't ask for MORE
rights," without explaining why, other than "it wouldn't
be fair." Is it unfair for bikes to enjoy fewer
restrictions due to their low danger rate? Most cycling
advocates I've read seem to agree that it is fair for
cyclists to pay no taxes to maintain a road, because
bicycles do not harm a road. The principle here is
similar. One could argue that it is unfair to favor one
mode of transportation over another, but perhaps such
a law would encourage people to choose the mode
that is healthy, environment-friendly, and safer for
all.

Nat

(Note: I am only talking about urban environments, which
I define as a place where a car is a luxury at best
but *never* a necessity.)

It's true that cyclists are prone to lapses of attention, and that by ignoring signs we can cause accidents. I'm certainly not porposing a total lack of rules....
