Re: Advocacy

Lately I,ve become involved in quite a few
projects. Number one on the list is of course, Critical
Mass this is possibly the most talked about. Some
other things I'm into is a Bicycle Users Group or BUG.
The one I have joined is called BrunsBUG. It was
formed in an inner suburb of Melbourne called Brunswick.
The reason I joined that was initially because I had
become involved in a bicycle recycle workshop. At the
workshop, we rebuild old discarded bikes and sell them off
real cheap to people who need a bike to get around,
but cant afford to spend heaps on one. Apart from
that, we also give people advice on fixing their bikes
ro we fix them for them. It is really great to work
at the bike workshop because people walk past and
see all the bike parts and are immediately intrigued.
You actually feel like you are making an impression
on them and have a good chance to influence them to
ride more often.<br>Another thing I do to advocate
commuter cycling is bore everyone I talk to shitless about
it. I have become known as "bike boy" amongst my
friends and that does actually make me alittle proud. I
make sure not to actually lose friends over it, but I
just try to show people that I'm serious about not
driving a car and sometimes it wears off on them.<br>One
of my friends used to drive around the corner to the
shop to buy smokes. Now he has bought a bike and rides
most places and we are going on a ride for a week next
week. Now, I'm not saying that I was completely
responsible for his change of attitude, and I know he is
completely capable of deciding these things for himself, but
I reckon it probably didn't hurt that I was so
fervent in my beliefs.<br>Anyway, sorry to go on & on &
on & on...., but you were looking for messages.
i.e.; "You asked for it!!"<br><br>Happy
Urbancycling,<br><br>Ben
