selection for finland   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #93 of 114 |
for those of you who have just joined us, we are discussing selection for
finland.
-------------------------------------------------

there is a upc selection process for international teams (in draft, but
basically completed). i think we should use that.

the first step (once selectors are asked to volunteer and some are chosen)
is to ask for players who want to be considered for selection. to my mind
the difference from shane's proposal is pretty minor because you will get
all the country's top players wanting to go to finland anyway. the selectors
provide the quality control.

but the most important thing is that something needs to happen soon. who is
responsible for this on the upc?

I think the NZUPC should identify the top 30 players in NZ and invite
them to be part of the development squad. At least then it has some
prestige, and would serve as 'quality control' (the absence of which has
sometimes been to the detriment of national teams in the past). We (the
appointed selectors and coach, whoever they may be) should view all
players on this season's tour, hand pick say 18-20 men and 10-12 women,
and offer them the opportunity to be part of the development squad. If
they're not part of the development squad they can't go to Worlds.

I can't see any other way to do this without paying huge disrespect to
the 2nd seeding we're likely to get at Worlds.

that's great rick (i.e., i completely agree that mixed is a better
option
for focus than split for finland). i guess shane's point still stands
though. when can we expect the selection process to get underway?

The UPC is likely to give a mixed team higher priority than an open
team - mainly due to the recent WUCC results. But if there's interest
in another mens team on top of the mixed team, that would be great.
BTW - Finland is 2004.
