Hi Doug,

NYU needs to scratch our Men's Varisty Pair.  Our other 3 entries can stay the same.

Do you know what the race schedule might look like?  We are trying to figure out how close some of our hot seating will be.

Thanks,

All,

Can anyone bring launches to the race? I believe we had 4 last year
with CMU bringing 2-3. I can't remember who brought the other
(Rochester and/or WashU).

Anyway, I think 4 seems like a good number. 3 for the course (2 start
and 1 finish, or 3 at the start, etc.) and one in reserve on shore for
the unexpected.

Can anyone bring a lauch with them?
Thanks, Doug

I got word from Ben @ Carnegie-Mellon today saying that it shouldn't be
a problem for the park to open early on the 2nd.

Ben and I will probably get as much set up on Saturday as possible like
last year (buoys & porto johns, etc.) Maybe we can even convince Donald
to come out of retirement to help. ;-) Teams can then show up to the
course early on Sunday and try to start racing about 6-ish. If things
run okay, this should allow crews to leave around noon or so.

We can also engineer the race schedule to allow crews traveling from
afar to start packing up earlier to get on the road. If this is of
particular concern let me know when you send your final entries.

I'm on the road for work today so I will update the web site and race
packet when I get back home on Thursday. If there are any other
concerns in the meantime just let me know.

Thanks, Doug

All,

I have some potentially bad news. Below is a message from Ben of
Carnegie-Mellon:

>Despite making several calls well before Thanksgiving and Christmas,
>and sending in an offical proposal letter since then, I just got a
>call today saying that April 1 is booked up with a huge bass tourney.
>He apologized for taking so long to respond and will work with us to
>find a day to do it, but I'm very afraid that we won't be able to
>find another weekend for everyone. He is saving Sunday, April 2nd
>for us, and they are also free most other weekends in April.

>I've included Mike Lambert from Three Rivers Rowing because he has
>dealt with Moraine state park in the past and may be able to offer
>suggestions.

I'm proposing we have a conference call tomorrow with all the coaches
to discuss planning. Mike, the TRRA executive director, has called
the park to no avail. The Keystone Bass Buddies apparently don't want
to share the lake again this year, and there seems to be some dodgy
timing of when Ben contacted them and when we did. I can let Ben give
more details tomorrow night.

At this very moment, we can consider holding the race on Sunday and
we're going to ask if they can open the park for us early so we can
finish in time for people to get home. Or we could consider having the
race on the river in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Please call one of the following numbers at 8pm Eastern (7pm Central)
so we can talk through options.
Phone Number: 866-295-5950
If you'd like to save me some money please call 978-964-0031 instead
of the toll free number above.
When prompted then enter this number to join the conference 8957538#

I will also send a copy of this to your email addresses directly.

Thanks, Doug

Could you please forward this to your rowers?

I thought it might be a neat idea to get medal design suggestions for
this year's regatta. Please email me at doug@... with
suggestions. Otherwise, I'll use the same design as last year, and A
a photo of last year's is here:

Submissions can be in color and must fit in the 2-inch round pattern
of last year's medals since that's the most economical.

Doug

Folks:

I wanted to follow up on the information-gathering Doug Rathburn tried to start several months ago regarding respective team resources.

Informal conversations have indicated that the support ($ and otherwise) respective teams receive varies enormously;I was hoping to get a more concrete sense of exactly how and how much.

My goal is that those who get nada (like Case) can use the disparities to help persuade (shame) our departments into doing at least a wee bit more.

To that end, please email the group w.

a. the amount of total financial support you received from the university (i.e. for all purposes - compensation, expenses, equipment, etc.) in 2005-2006 and, if it is allocated as a lump sum or in amounts designated for certain costs. If the latter, can you detail how much is allocated for each expense. Also, is the allocation conducted by university administrators or a student-governed committee?

b. Whether your institution has a dedicated space for indoor practice (i.e. a room that is yours alone vs ergs out in a main cardio room shared by all university constituents vs no space at all,. i.e. you have to go work out off campus). If one of the first two, can you describe what you have (i.e. # ergs, weightlifting equipment, etc.)?

Thanks.

All,

I'd like to thank all of the coaches that made this year's race a
success. Aside from the rainy weather, the day was great. There was
some great racing, and some close finishes.

I created a "main" page for the regatta for all years:
http://www.rathburn.net/URA.html

So you can access all year's of the race and put that link on your
own school sites. It should not change from year to year, but URL
for a specific year's will change.

The results are up accessible from that site and the year-specific
site:
http://www.rathburn.net/rowing/URA/2005/URA2005.html

I'll be adding photos and starting the Feedback Forum in the next
few days. Otherwise, I'm going to take a nap.

Thanks again,
Doug

All,

I've posted the preliminary entries. Please, check to make sure I've
gotten everything down correctly. A ton of information came at me
today, and I may have made a mistake.

Some things to consider:
1. we need to decide what to do with the Novice Men's & Women's Fours.
They have 8 entries. It's hard to justify a separate flight for two
boats. I'm looking for suggestions.
One suggestion was to just run two equally weighted flights of novices
(i.e. medals and points), but I'd need you guys to agree on an
equitable split.

2. I split the Men's pairs into two events because of the number of
entries.

3. First race is now at 8am instead of 7am. The park opens at sunrise,
which is about 6am (detailed under the "Trailer" section of the latest
Regatta Packet). This will allow us to square everything away in the
morning.

4. Tomorrow we should agree on the "Final" schedule. Therefore, please
review any time conflicts and post them ASAP. We'd all like as many
people to race as possible.

I anticipate being attached to my computer tomorrow, but otherwise
feel free to call me.

Thanks,

All,

The entry deadline is Wednesday, but the process can go much smoother if
you provide with the detail sooner than later.

I assume it'll go much like last year.
1. All the entries come in
2. I publish the preliminary schedule
3. everyone realizes they have to double up equipment
4. then request changes to the schedule

I'm not expecting this process to change, because I want as many people
racing as possible. However, the sooner the schedule is nailed down the
better for all involved.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Also: I'm ahppy to dockmaster again this year.

Finally; Thanks for the nice words about the article Aaron was quoted in. Thye
beat Rutgers this morning by 7 seconds. Lost to them last year by 22 seconds.
He's happy today.

All,

I was just asked by Cameron @ WashU about sculling events at the URA
regatta. We didn't have them last year, and there was only a small interest
this year. He has a few athletes that would be interested in a race, and
most of CMU's team can scull. However, with only two schools it doesn't
make for an interesting race.

Therefore, this is the last call for creating a race for singles and/or
doubles. We're a week away from the race so this is for definite interest
only (i.e. you would enter for sure if offered). Please, let me know ASAP.

We could also have a coach's 1x race at the end of the day for bragging
rights. Make it like 500m so all the kids could cheer you across the finish
line.

Thanks,
Doug
