All,
If possible, please bring the following to the race:
1. Megaphones (for general yelling)
2. Stopwatches (for the finish)
3. Handheld Radios & Cell Phones (to contact you)
4. Other cool stuff I've forgotten
Make sure stuff is clearly labelled so it is returned.
Also, if anyone has a set of umpire flags (red & white) let me know. I
have a red and a yellow flag that'll do fine, but not better than the
real thing.
Thanks,
Doug
All,
I've posted the preliminary entries. Please, check to make sure I've
gotten everything down correctly. A ton of information came at me
today, and I may have made a mistake.
Some things to consider:
1. we need to decide what to do with the Novice Men's & Women's Fours.
They have 8 entries. It's hard to justify a separate flight for two
boats. I'm looking for suggestions.
One suggestion was to just run two equally weighted flights of novices
(i.e. medals and points), but I'd need you guys to agree on an
equitable split.
2. I split the Men's pairs into two events because of the number of
entries.
3. First race is now at 8am instead of 7am. The park opens at sunrise,
which is about 6am (detailed under the "Trailer" section of the latest
Regatta Packet). This will allow us to square everything away in the
morning.
4. Tomorrow we should agree on the "Final" schedule. Therefore, please
review any time conflicts and post them ASAP. We'd all like as many
people to race as possible.
I anticipate being attached to my computer tomorrow, but otherwise
feel free to call me.
Thanks,
Doug
All,
Fours for Emory are taken care of! Sorry for the confusion. Case has
generously offered their shells, and Meg didn't get my email yesterday
informing her of their offer.
Thank you to WashU and Case for helping Emory out and to Rochester for
bringing an extra launch. Without generosity, this race wouldn't happen.
Thanks,
Doug

All,
The entry deadline is Wednesday, but the process can go much smoother if
you provide with the detail sooner than later.
I assume it'll go much like last year.
1. All the entries come in
2. I publish the preliminary schedule
3. everyone realizes they have to double up equipment
4. then request changes to the schedule
I'm not expecting this process to change, because I want as many people
racing as possible. However, the sooner the schedule is nailed down the
better for all involved.
Thanks for your cooperation.

I'm also game for the 500 m sprint, but I don't have a 1x. If I can
borrow one, great. If not, I guess you'll have to find someone else to
beat...
I'm also glad to help Tim at the dock or do whatever else needs to be
done.
See yinz in a few days,

All,
I was just asked by Cameron @ WashU about sculling events at the URA
regatta. We didn't have them last year, and there was only a small interest
this year. He has a few athletes that would be interested in a race, and
most of CMU's team can scull. However, with only two schools it doesn't
make for an interesting race.
Therefore, this is the last call for creating a race for singles and/or
doubles. We're a week away from the race so this is for definite interest
only (i.e. you would enter for sure if offered). Please, let me know ASAP.
We could also have a coach's 1x race at the end of the day for bragging
rights. Make it like 500m so all the kids could cheer you across the finish
line.
Thanks,
Doug

we'd like to have three.
Hi all,
we (Emory) were wondering if we could borrow boats for the regatta...
the state of Georgia recently passed a law making it illegal to rent
trucks with towing packages with the intention of towing without
having a towing license...
This obviously leaves us in a bind; the only viable solution we've
been able to come up with is hiring a trailer-driving guy, but that is
pretty expensive and is going to cost us a few thousand dollars to get
up to Pittsburgh.
We're looking to enter:
NW 8+ (A&B)
NW 4+ (A&B)
NM 8+
NM 4+
VW hwt 4+
VM hwt 4+
Any help is greatly appreciated.
We would be able to pay a modest amount for borrowing boats.
Thanks!!

We made changes up until race day last year, but we limited late additions that would bump the event to heats and finals. The day will be manic enough without having to re-engineer the schedule. The craziness results from the fact that each team has very few shells doubling up is standard. So please let me know your intentions as close as possible soon.
Please, go the web site below to look at the race wish list. I've got the main categories of races, but if I've forgotten something please note it in the "Comment" field. Either update the Excel file directly or email me with your requests. You can also
note if you'd like multiple entries (I've filled in Chicago as an example). I will update it as I get responses. http://www.rathburn.net/rowing/URA/2005/URA2005.html
More importantly, I'm trying to have medals this year and I need to know how many events to order for.
I apologize profusely for all of the random emails and confusion
surrounding the date of the regatta. I'm happy to say the weekend never
changed.
People need to finalize their plans so a date has to be set. I've
compiled the list of preferences below based on the Yahoo poll and emails
directly to me.
Saturday: Case - Tim (men) & Chris
(women) Chicago - Jess (men) and she pulls
the trailer Brandeis - Ellen WashU - Cameron CMU - Donald (he was already planning
on Sat, but haven't gotten explicit confirmation b/c he's on vacation
this week)
Sunday: Chicago - Antonio (Nov. Women) Rochester - Will (men &
women)
And Will @ Rochester said he could make Saturday work, but would have to
change around some travel arrangements. I have not heard directly from
NYU or Emory about the specific day, but the weekend is fine.
Everyone has stated a preference, but none said they couldn't come on one
day or the other.
The draft of the regatta packet is now on my web site.
It is similar to last year, but there are a few notable changes:
- Regatta obviously switched location - Betting shirts is not
mandatory, but is cool and expected
- Event medals will be awarded. At
the moment gold only, but looking for donors for the other colors
- Volunteers will need to be provided
(in addition to the coaches) by each team to help run things
- Points System changed slightly.
This is my suggestion, but please discuss
There are also a few things that still need to be determined:
- Fees (waiting for cost info from Donald)
- Trailer parking info (ditto from Don)
- Finalize the schedule based on requested events (please get that info
to me ASAP)

Ellen - I have a four you can use for men and women's varsity events; it
is a hvywt boat, good for women as light as 145, better if they are over
150. It is a '97 Dirigo, in very good shape, (and for sale as well).

Hi,
My name is Ellen Downes and I coach at Brandeis. We're still working
out the details of trying to come (and are really excited about the
possibility). Saturday would be vastly preferable for us. We're
considering just bringing a men's and women's varsity four--and are
wondering if anyone could loan us shells to race in? We may be able to
bring a trailer and athletes seperately--but it would be easier to
figure out our logistics if we didn't have to. Also, info about cheap
lodging etc would be great.

All, (in response to Will's email)
No one as yet has objected to the proposed weekend, but I've gotten no
consensus as to which day. I personally don't care which day (Saturday or
Sunday) the race is held. Saturday will affect Friday classes and a Sunday
race will probably affect Monday classes for those driving from far away.
In the interest of not upsetting anyone unilaterally, I've tried to leave
it up to you all. I posed the question last spring and put a poll on the
Yahoo group site. I haven't gotten responses from enough coaches to nail
the date down.
Therefore, please go to the site and cast your vote so teams can start
making their spring plans.

The schedule looks good, but we at Case were wondering if it could start at an hour later, at 8, since the team will be travelling down that morning.
