Michigan 3, Northern Michigan 3

A disappointing start to the weekend as Michigan tied Northern
Michigan, 3-3, Friday night at Yost. The Wolverines took a 3-2 lead
in the third period, but a couple of penalties allowed the Wildcats to
score a 5-on-3 power play goal to tie the contest. They also had a
shorthanded goal earlier in the game.

There's something about Yost that seems to bring out the best in NMU's
goalies. Brian Stewart stopped 41 Wolverine shots, while Billy Sauer
had 21 saves. Sauer's three goals against is the most he has given up
since Ohio State upset Michigan on Nov. 30.

Tonight's game will be broadcast by student station WOLV-TV and you
can watch the game online via the link at MGoBlue.com/icehockey.

Michigan did get a little good news in the standings as Nebraska-Omaha
defeated Michigan State, 5-4, in overtime. That puts the Wolverines
ahead of the Spartans by three points, and they remain two points
behind Miami, who is idle this weekend. A win tonight will tie them
for the lead, setting up the big showdown next weekend in Oxford.

-------------------
QUICK DISMISSAL
-------------------

The big story out of Yost last night, however, came before the puck
even dropped. It was reported that freshman defenseman Kevin Quick
had been dismissed for violating team rules and the trust of the team.

"Obviously, it was serious enough that we had to let him go," said
head coach Red Berenson. "It was just a total violation of our team
trust and our rules.

"He's a good kid, and it's been a long, long week for me having to
make this decision, but it was the only thing to do."

Berenson added that he didn't learn all the details until Thursday and
when he did it was a quick decision to let him go.

There's no word on what exactly the violation was as the coaches and
the players won't discuss it and Quick has yet to be reached for
comment. It obviously wasn't a minor issue as Berenson has suspended
players in the past for a game or two for things like missing class or
a team meeting, as happened earlier this season to Louie Caporusso.
Rarely is a player kicked off the team, and the last player I can
think of that was given the boot--perhaps the only Wolverine
ever?--was freshman Troy Kahler back in 1998.

A 2006 third round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Quick originally
was part of the freshman rotation with Scooter Vaughan and Tristin
Llewellyn before becoming a blue line mainstay. He had recently been
paired with Mark Mitera on the top line and had two goals and two
assists in 21 games.

His loss means Vaughan and Llewellyn will both see full time roles on
the blue line, and it leaves the Wolverines with six defensemen.

Quick Update...

Michigan 3, Notre Dame 2

Louie Caporusso scored with 21 seconds left in the third period to cap
off a thrilling 3-2 come from behind victory for Michigan over Notre
Dame.

The Wolverines started the toughest stretch of their schedule on their
heels as the Irish came out storming and had their first good scoring
opportunity just 23 seconds into the game. They would continue to
dominate and jump out to a 2-0 lead six minutes into the game on goals
by Kevin Deeth and Justin White.

Michigan finally started to get things going late in the opening
stanza and after matching minors with 42 seconds left, the Irish took
another penalty to give U-M a 4-on-3 to start the second period.

It took Kevin Porter just 21 seconds into the second period to
capitalize on the power play and bring the team and crowd to life.

With 7:55 left in the period, freshman Matt Rust beat Irish goalie
Jordan Pearce to tie the game.

Looking to keep their momentum goalie, the Wolverines got hit with
their biggest challenge when defenseman Chris Summers was given an
early exit for checking from behind--a five minute major and game
misconduct--just 2:19 into the third period.

The Wolverines killed off 4:13 of it before the Irish took a penalty
to negate the rest. Michigan would take one more penalty and kill it
off, then really applied pressure the rest of the way before Caporusso
sealed it late.

The Wolverines and Irish will finish the weekend series tomorrow night
at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and can be
seen on Comcast Local.

PATCH OUT: Freshman forward Max Pacioretty did not play for the second
consecutive game. Patch injured his shoulder during last Friday's win
against Western Michigan and sat out Saturday's contest. No word yet
on how long he might be out.

Quick update...

Michigan 1, Michigan Tech 0 (2ot)

For the first time since 1996, the Michigan Wolverines are the Great
Lakes Invitational champions after defeating Michigan Tech, 1-0, in
two overtimes. Travis Turnbull was the hero tipping a shot by Scooter
Vaughan past Huskies goaltender Rob Nolan 2:32 into the second OT.

Billy Sauer made 38 saves and was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player. Sauer became the first goaltender in GLI history to post
back-to-back shutouts.

The only other All-Tournament team member the radio announcers caught
was Mark Mitera. I'll have the full list up on MHNet when available.

In the day's earlier game, Providence downed Michigan State, 5-3.

Michigan 6, Providence 0

Michigan got off to a slow start, but shook off the rust and got
stronger as the game wore on to defeat Providence, 6-0, and advance to
the Great Lakes Invitational championship game. They will face the
winner of the Michigan State vs. Michigan Tech contest later tonight.

The Wolverines were sloppy in the opening period, but despite getting
outshot 16-3 they capitalized on their chances and took a 2-0 lead on
goals by the returning Louie Caporusso and Aaron Palushaj.

In the second stanza, the Wolverines played much better and popped in
three more goals, but once again they were outshot 16-11. Anthony
Ciraulo scored a shorthanded goal on a beautiful centering pass by
Porter, then on the power play Porter fired in a one-timer from the
right circle to make it 4-0. Late in the period, freshman Ben Winnett
would steal the puck in the Friars' zone and place a wrist shot in the
far top corner for a 5-0 lead.

Travis Turnbull would cap off the scoring in the third period with a
shot through the five hole.

The championship game will start at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night at Joe
Louis Arena.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TV: Tomorrow night's championship game will NOT be
shown live on Fox Sports Detroit due to a Red Wings hockey game. It
will be shown locally on Comcast Local and according to the commercial
preview on a Fox Sports Plus (check your listings). According to
TVGuide.com, the championship game will be shown tape delayed on Fox
Sports Detroit late night at 12:30 a.m.

MITERA PROMOTED: Junior defenseman Mark Mitera has been promoted to an
alternate captain. Junior forward Tim Miller will no longer be
wearing the 'A'.

"Mitera definitely earned the 'A' and in Miller's case, I don?t think
it's helped him," U-M coach Red Berenson told TheWolverine.com. "I
think sometimes when players get a letter, it can be a burden on their
game and they're worried about too many things and I've told Timmy
Miller I don't want him to worry about being a captain at this point."

WOLVERINES HANG ON TO DEFEAT FALCONS, 3-2

The Michigan hockey team gave up a two goal lead, but retook the lead
on a late second period goal by Brandon Naurato and hung on in the
third to defeat Bowling Green, 3-2.

It was a chippy affair that saw the Wolverines special teams
outperform the Falcons special teams unit. Michigan held BGSU to
1-of-9 on the power play, while the Wolverines went 2-for-6 with the
man-advantage and also scored a shorthander.

Freshman Matt Rust scored that shorty 3:42 into the first period.
Rust intercepted a pass at the U-M blueline and zipped down the left
side. He cut across the net and top shelved a backhander on Falcons
goalie Nick Eno.

The Wolverines went ahead 2-0 on the power play with 7:29 left in the
opening stanza when Kevin Porter beat Eno with a one-timer from the
right circle.

U-M appeared to be in firm control, but penalty trouble mounted early
and often in the second period allowing the Falcons a chance to regain
the momentum.

Tristin Llewellyn and Mark Mitera were whistled for infractions just
seven seconds apart early in the middle stanza to give the Falcons a
long two-man advantage. Jacob Cepis used a screen in front of U-M
goalie Bryan Hogan to beat the freshman netminder and cut the lead in
half.

After the Wolverines killed off Mitera's penalty, Falcons leading
scorer Derek Whitmore stole the puck at the U-M blueline and went in
all alone and Hogan stoned him.

Things would get real interesting soon after as the penalties hit both
teams rapidly, resulting in about 30 seconds of 3-on-3 hockey, but
neither team scored.

With 7:50 left in the period, John Mazzei took a shot from deep along
the right boards that Hogan stopped, but Cepis swooped in and slammed
home the rebound to tie the game.

The Wolverines would go on the power play with 36 seconds left in the
period and that's when Brandon Naurato fired a wrist shot past Eno
with six seconds remaining to give U-M the lead heading to the third.

"We got dominated in that second period," Naurato said. "Bowling
Green had two goals. But any goal in the first or last two minutes of
a period is huge for momentum. So, that was a big goal."

Just over a minute into the third Kevin Porter was sent to the box for
high sticking, but the penalty killers went to work again and this
time Travis Turnbull had a clear breakaway. He tried going to his
right, but Eno read him the whole way and turned his shot aside.

In the back half of the period, BGSU leading scorer Derek Whitmore got
around the Wolverine defenseman and Hogan stopped his opportunity.

With 2:10 to play, Chad Kolarik was whistled for high sticking,
essentially giving the Falcons a power play to end the game.

Shortly into the man-advantage, it was the Wolverines skating down ice
two-on-one and Eno made a huge save to keep the Falcons hopes alive.

With Eno out of net, the Wolverines played strong and did everything
but ice the game.

Bryan Hogan sent the puck the length of the ice and hit the post,
probably the closest any U-M goalie has ever come to scoring. Porter
just missed an open net from the BGSU blue line, then Tim Miller sent
one wide as time was winding down.

"I was just thinking about clearing the puck and the only lane I saw
was down the middle," Hogan said. "Well, (honestly), yeah, I was
thinking, 'Oh my god, I have a chance here.' But it is what it is; I
will remember that for the rest of my life."

While an insurance goal would have been nice, the Wolverines still
hung on to win, 3-2, and end the first half of the season atop the
CCHA standings.

"No one really expected us to do this well," Porter said. "We were
ranked fourth in the CCHA (in the preseason poll) and now we are
ranked second in the country. So, I think everyone is a little
surprised. But now we are going into the second half, and we
shouldn't be that surprising anymore. We know that we are one of the
top teams in the nation, so if we come out and work hard, we should
have a good second half as well."

The Wolverines are off for a few weeks for winter break and return to
the ice for the annual Great Lakes Invitational at the end of the month.

Michigan 4, at Bowling Green 2

Quick update...

Michigan overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Falcons at Bowling Green, 4-2.

Kevin Porter scored with 15 seconds left in the opening period to give
the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons responded with two goals in the second period to take the lead.

They held that lead until 4:21 left in the third period when Matt Rust
tied the game from Aaron Palushaj and Carl Hagelin.

With 1:23 left in regulation, Chris Summers--playing his first game
back at the forward position since late last season--netted his first
goal of the season off a Travis Turnbull shot that hit the post to put
the Wolverines ahead, 3-2.

Chad Kolarik would add an empty net goal to secure the victory.

Another strong night in net for Billy Sauer as he stopped 27 shots.

The weekend series wraps up tomorrow night at Yost Ice Arena.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS: Tomorrow night is also the annual Teddy Bear Toss at
Yost. All bears should be wrapped in plastic or the original
container. If you forget to bring one, you can purchase a bear at the
DekerWear booth.

WATCH ONLINE: If you can't make the game, you can watch it online.
Student station WOLV-TV will air the game live online. If you go in
with low expectations, it will suit its purpose. Go to
www.mgoblue.com/icehockey and on the right side, Upcoming Game info
where the audio link is there is also a video link.

Speaking of that web address, the shortcut to the hockey page has
changed back to it's old URL. http://mgoblue.com/icehockey will take
you to the site. The one they had switched to ...
http://mgoblue.com/ice-hockey (with a hyphen) ... will now bring you

SHORTHANDED FOR THE GLI: If you haven't heard by now, Michigan will
once again be shorthanded for the Great Lakes Invitational as four
Wolverines were selected for the World Junior Championship. Max
Pacioretty, Matt Rust, and Chris Summers will represent Team USA,
while Carl Hagelin will suit up for Team Sweden.

One positive note is that freshman center Louie Caporusso is expected
to be back from his injury for the GLI tourney.

Michigan 5, Minnesota 1

After losing their previous six encounters with Minnesota, including a
4-3 loss at the start of the season, the Wolverines finally broke
through with a convincing 5-1 win tonight at Yost. It's their first
sweep of the College Hockey Showcase since 2002.

The seniors led the charge again as Kevin Porter had a four point
night and Chad Kolarik recorded three points.

Kolarik opened the scoring late in the first period putting a rebound
past Gophers goalie Jeff Frazee.

Kolarik would strike again on a nice feed by Porter 2:43 into the
second period on the power play to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.

The Gophers would go on the power play shortly thereafter, however it
was Porter taking advantage of a turnover by Frazee to put the
Wolverines ahead by three goals.

With 6:40 left in the second stanza, Ben Gordon would finally get the
Gophers on the scoreboard, but Porter would respond 3:25 later to give
Michigan a three goal lead heading into the third period.

Freshman Ben Winnett would score off a great feed by fellow classmate
Aaron Palushaj 4:59 into the third period to make it 5-1. Michigan
would continue to dominate the rest of the way to make it the final
score.

Junior netminder Billy Sauer finished the game with 26 saves, while
Frazee had 18 stops for the Gophers.

The Wolverines stay in Ann Arbor next weekend as they host Ohio State.

Showcase Update: Up in East Lansing, Michigan State and Wisconsin tied 4-4.

I should clarify that in the first paragraph I meant there is no free
video webcast stream of tonight's game by the Big Ten Network. There
is still a free audio stream at MGoBlue.com

Also note, MGoBlue.com changed their format the other day (and maybe
it's just me, but I really don't like it). The shortcut for the
hockey page is now http://mgoblue.com/ice-hockey with a hyphen, not
mgoblue.com/icehockey (you'll get an error page). The free audio link
can now be found on the right side under Upcoming Games (on the right
side of that box there's an "Audio" link).

From what I can tell, there is no free internet stream for tonight's
game. The other day their schedule listed tonight's game for the
webcast, but when you go to the free video page it's not listed and
it's not mentioned on the schedule anymore. Once again the Big Ten

However, there is good news for those of you with DirecTV and DISH

BLACKBURN Q&A
--------------------

MGoBlue.com has a Q&A with former Wolverine goaltender/new U-M
goaltender coach Josh Blackburn as part of their MGoBlogs series.

Blackburn talks about his time at Michigan, his "frustrating
experience" in professional hockey, and what it's like being a coach
and being on the flip side of the player/coach relationship.

You can read it at:

--------------------
HUNWICK RECALLED
--------------------

Former Wolverine captain Matt Hunwick has received his second call up
to the Boston Bruins after an injury to Andrew Ference. He played 13
minutes in Saturday's 7-4 loss to Montreal and had a minus-2 rating.

"He's played well for us," said coach Claude Julien. "He's played
extremely well in Providence. We've lost Ference here for a little
bit. We thought Matt should be part of the team and he was deserving
to be here. That's why we called him up."

Hunwick made his NHL debut Nov. 10 in a 2-1 win over Buffalo. He saw
15 1/2 minutes of ice time and played a very solid game according to
reports. He was sent back to Providence after the game, where has
recorded four assists and four penalty minutes in 11 games.

Another quick update...

Michigan 6, LSSU 2

For the second consecutive night the Wolverines trailed after the
opening 20 minutes then surged ahead during the second period en route
to downing Lake Superior State, 6-2.

Kevin Porter scored 2:58 into the contest, but former Wolverine Zac
MacVoy responded at 10:44 and John Scrymgeour added a late period
tally to put the Lakers ahead 2-1.

Early in the second period the Wolverines would score three goals in a
2:48 span to pull ahead 4-2. Travis Turnbull scored at 2:10, then
Aaron Palushaj and Brian Lebler scored 56 seconds apart.

Anthony Ciraulo made it 5-2 7:34 into the third period, and Porter
added his second of the night late in the period.

It wasn't as lopsided as the score indicated. The Wolverines played
very undisciplined and allowed the Lakers ten power play
opportunities, but the penalty kill would shine denying them on all
chances. On the flip side, U-M only had three power play chances and
converted on one of them.

Billy Sauer had to be sharp and finished the game with 34 saves.

Michigan completed the sweep of Alaska with a 4-2 win at Yost Saturday
night. Senior forward Chad Kolarik led the way with a pair of goals,
while Billy Sauer made 18 stops in net.

The Wolverines' Carl Hagelin had a great scoring chance early as he
got in past the defense, but his five-hole attempt was stopped by
Alaska goalie Wylie Rogers.

But shortly thereafter, Kolarik connected at 4:57 to give U-M the
lead. Max Pacioretty dug the puck out of the right corner and fed it
to Kolarik, who skated in between the circles and tossed a backhander
past Rogers.

On the power play with 1:07 left in the period, Brandon Naurato
crashed the net and slam dunked a perfect feed from Steve Kampfer to
make it 2-0.

Early in the second period on the power play, the Wolverines had a
goal waived off during a scramble in front of the Alaska net when the
referee blew the whistle before the puck crossed the goal line.

So the Wolverines responded by scoring again seconds later when
Kolarik netted his second goal of the night.

The Nanooks would finally get one back late in the second period when
Dion Knelsen beat Sauer during a two-on-one rush.

The Wolverines would retake a three goal lead 1:48 into the third
period when Aaron Palushaj put in a centering pass by Brandon Naurato
that also went off Tim Miller.

Late in the third period Knelsen would bury a wrist shot past Sauer
during a four-on-three power play to make it 4-2, but that's as close
as the Nanooks would get.

The Wolverines travel north to Lake Superior State next weekend to
face the Lakers, and they might be doing it as the dreaded #1 team in
the nation as the current #1 Miami RedHawks split with Notre Dame.

WOLVERINES FLY PAST TERRIERS, 6-2

Michigan got off to a fast and furious start and never looked back as
they completed the sweep of Boston University with a 6-2 win Saturday
night.

U-M scored by committee as six different Wolverines scored and 14
Wolverines registered a point.

The Wolverines put their first puck in the net 24 seconds into the
game, but it was waived off due to the referee blowing his whistle
before it crossed the line.

So what did the Wolverines do? Score again 18 seconds later when Ben
Winnett redirected a centering pass from Tim Miller past BU goalie
Karson Gillespie.

Just 1:43 later on their first power play of the evening, Max
Pacioretty got the puck between the circles and beat Gillespie with a
wrist shot to make it 2-0. It was the rookie's first career goal.

"It is such a relief," Patch said. "I had a feeling I was going to
get it tonight. I had a good feeling in warmups. Everyone kept saying
'give Max the puck' in practice, so I just had a feeling all day that
it was going to happen tonight."

The Terriers would cut the lead in half on the power play 1:38 into
the second period when U-M goalie Billy Sauer fumbled the puck behind
the net. Chris Higgins tapped it in front and Jason Lawrence fired it
in with Sauer out of position.

Just over four minutes later, the Wolverines would retake a two goal
lead with another power play goal. Mark Mitera hit Carl Hagelin with
a home run pass up the middle of the ice, and the freshman split the
defense and beat Gillespie with a wrist shot past the glove.

The Wolverines would blow open the game in the third period by reeling
off three more goals.

Louie Caporusso, who had been close all night, batted a rebound out of
mid-air into the net at 6:43 of the third period.

Then at 10:04, Travis Turnbull picked up the puck at center ice and
turn on the afterburners as he flew around BU defenseman Kevin Kielt
and wrapped it around Gillespie.

Four minutes later Chad Kolarik grabbed a loose puck to the right of
the BU net and slid it through traffic past Gillespie.

The Terriers Nick Bonino would give BU one finally tally with 6.5
seconds left in regulation during a scramble in front of the U-M net.

Sauer finished the game with 22 saves, while Gillespie stopped 28.
The Wolverines were 2-for-7 with the man-advantage and the Terriers
converted 1-of-4 opportunities.

"We definitely came out wanting to win," junior defenseman Mark Mitera
said. "I don't think we were expecting to score six goals, but we
were doing the little things right, so it paid off.

"Last night they took it to us off the bat and caught us off guard.
But tonight, we knew they were going to come out even harder and we
knew we had to match that, and I think we did a good job of playing
physical and taking care of the puck."

U-M COMPLETES SWEEP WITH THRILLING 4-3 VICTORY

Senior forward Chad Kolarik has hit more iron than net this season,
but he picked a great time to finally find the twine.

Kolarik scored a shorthanded goal with 21.1 seconds left in regulation
to give the Michigan hockey team a thrilling 4-3 victory over Northern
Michigan.

The Wildcats, who had just scored a power play goal 19 seconds earlier
to tie the game, remained on the power play due to a major penalty to
U-M freshman Matt Rust.

But NMU coughed up the puck at the Michigan blueline and Kolarik
skated in on a breakaway. Wildcat goalie Brian Stewart got a piece of
his shot, but not enough as the puck trickled into the net.

It was a hard fought victory for the Wolverines, who one night earlier
had controlled most of the game.

U-M got off to a rough start taking a penalty two minutes into the
game. After a successful kill, NMU's Billy Smith went to the box at
8:02 for tripping and the Wolverines converted on their first
opportunity of the night.

Mark Mitera threw a wrist shot on net from the left point that beat
NMU goalie Derek Janzen, who was screen in front by Travis Turnbull.

Back to the sin bin the Wolverines would go, however. After killing
off a Chad Langlais penalty, Carl Hagelin found himself heading to the
box, and the Wildcats found themselves breaking Michigan's perfect
penalty kill and tying the game when Jared Brown ripped a one-timer
from the left circle past U-M goalie Billy Sauer.

Seconds later, it was back to the box for Michigan, but the Wolverines
managed to kill off the NMU power play and escape the period tied 1-1.

U-M's parade to the box continued 5:23 into the second period when Ben
Winnett was whistled for interference. After another successful kill,
the Wildcats finally got into a bit of trouble midway through the
period that resulted in a two-man advantage for U-M for 52 seconds.

NMU killed off the first penalty, then while still a man down, a
turnover resulted in a two-on-none breakaway for Nick Sirota and Ray
Kaunisto. Sirota carried the puck into the U-M zone and opted to pass
it across to Kaunisto, who misfired the one-timer.

The Wolverines quickly regained control of the puck and headed off in
the other direction. Kevin Porter skated in on the right side towards
the net and fired a shot that went off an NMU defender and seemed to
slowly slide towards the net, but it somehow slipped past Janzen as
players crashed the crease to give U-M a 2-1 lead.

U-M would carry the lead over to the third period, but it wouldn't
take long for the Wildcats to knot it back up. Billy Sauer stretched
out the left pad to make a tough save on Nathan Sigmund's shot from
the slot, but the rebound went to Phil Fox all alone to the right of
the net and he fired it in at 3:11.

The Wolverines were unsuccessful on a pair of power play opportunities
and the game would remain tied until 4:38 left when Ben Winnett skated
straight into the NMU zone and sizzled a wrist shot into the top
corner of the net to give U-M a 3-2 lead. NMU goalie Derek Janzen
would be pulled in favor of Brian Stewart after the goal.

With 2:01 remaining, Matt Rust would be called for a 5 minute major
and game-misconduct penalty for checking from behind, which would put
the Wildcats on the power play for the remainder of regulation.

NMU pulled Stewart with about a minute left for a six-on-four
advantage and with 40.2 seconds left, Fox redirected a pass from Matt
Siddall past Sauer to tie the game and send the players and crowd into
a frenzy.

The Wildcats remained on the power play due to the major penalty, but
19 seconds later Kolarik put ice down everyone's pants when he scored
a shorthanded breakaway goal to give the Wolverines the win.

Sauer finished the game with 18 saves, while Janzen had 15 and Stewart
had zero for the Wildcats.

The Wolverines return to Yost Ice Arena next weekend as they host
Boston University. It should be noted that Saturday's game will start
at 8:30 p.m. due to the Michigan football game.

PORTER'S PAIR POWERS MICHIGAN, 3-1

Senior captain Kevin Porter scored two goals to help propel the
Michigan hockey team to a 3-1 victory tonight at Northern Michigan.

The first period was solid but unspectacular play by both teams. It
was pretty even until the end when a bad defensive turnover by the
Wolverines between the circles in their own zone allowed Nick Sirota
to walk in alone on U-M goalie Billy Sauer and flip a backhander past
him.

But a penalty riddle second period--for the Wildcats--allowed the
Wolverines to climb back into the game.

Early in the middle stanza it appeared U-M had finally broken their
0-for power play streak, but referee Steve McInchak waived off the
goal because he had blown the whistle before the puck went into the net.

After a few more power plays came up empty handed, the Wolverines
finally converted a 5x3 opportunity when Chad Kolarik sent a pass
across the slot to Kevin Porter and he wrist the puck past NMU goalie
Brian Stewart.

The Wolverines dominated the second period with five power play
opportunities and limiting the Wildcats to two shots on goal.

In the third period, the Wildcats got an early power play, but shot
themselves in the foot midway through it when Jared Brown tripped Mark
Mitera from behind.

The Wildcats got another power play chance at 7:41, but again, midway
through the man-advantage, they took another bad penalty, this time
for too many men on the ice.

The Wolverines killed off the remainder of their penalty, then
capitalized on the shortened power play at 10:30 when Porter connected
for his second tally of the night. Kolarik ripped a shot off the
cross bar and the rebound came right out to Porter near the right
circle and, with Stewart out of position, he fired a wrist shot into
the open net.

Michigan really controlled play after the goal through much of the
remainder of the game. With about seven minutes left, they got the
puck into the NMU zone and turned it into a shooting gallery by
holding it there for a good minute or two and just unloading shot
after shot.

With 3:44 left, Carl Hagelin (bork! bork! bork!) iced the game when he
smoked a wrist shot top shelf past Stewart.

The Wildcats had a power play for the final 1:37 when Brian Lebler got
called for running into the goaltender, even though he didn't hit the
goaltender. Lebler and an NMU player were going after the puck and he
checked the NMU player, who crashed into Stewart.

Regardless, the U-M penalty kill did a fantastic job shutting down the
Wildcats final power play. You could tell how bad Porter wanted the
hat trick and he got close a few times with the net empty.

For the game, the Wolverines were 2-for-9 with the man-advantage,
while NMU was 0-for-5. Billy Sauer didn't get much work with 13
saves, but he made a couple of critical stops in the third period to
keep the Wolverines in the game.

A very solid effort all around by Michigan tonight. The weekend
series wraps up tomorrow night.

WOLVERINES COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, 4-3

For the first 20 minutes, the meeting between Minnesota and Michigan
was resembling their past handful of contests--the Gophers got off to
a strong start while the Wolverines struggled out of the gate.

The struggle allowed the Gophers to jump out to a 2-0 lead midway
through the first period on goals by R.J. Anderson and Blake Wheeler
just 1:20 apart.

But unlike their recent history, these young Wolverines didn't get the
memo that they were suppose to roll over and give up. Instead, they
came out and dominated the second period, peppering Minnesota goalie
Jeff Frazee with 20 shots, and freshman Matt Rust earned his first
career goal at 8:48 to cut the lead in half.

"We got a good forecheck in and some solid offensive-zone play," Rust
said. "We worked it down low and eventually got the puck in front. I
got a couple whacks at it and it went in."

The Gophers Ryan Flynn would strike early in the third to retake a two
goal lead. But Steve Kampfer would answer for the Wolverines just
over two minutes later to make it 3-2.

But again, just over two minutes later, back came the Gophers as
Patrick White put the puck past U-M goalie Billy Sauer.

Not so fast, however. Rust would net his second of the night at 10:32
to make it 4-3.

The Wolverines kept the pressure up by outshooting the Gophers 18-6 in
the third period, but a penalty on Rust with 2:01 left in regulation
all but ended their comeback hopes.

Frazee finished the game with 44 saves, while Sauer had 18 for the Wolverines.

Despite the loss, the young Wolverines put forth their best effort
against the Gophers in recent years, which has to be taken as an
encouraging sign.

"(The loss) told us as a team that having 12 freshmen a lot of teams
are going to try to pick on us, but that we can be a top team," Rust
said. "It's all about working hard. If we stick together as a team I
think there is no limit for us."

"For the second college game for these freshmen, I thought it was
great," senior captain Kevin Porter said. "Obviously we didn't come
up with the win, but I thought battling back was great. We fought back
and we scored a couple of goals, but we couldn't come up with it in
the end though.

"Since I've been here, they've always beaten us by a few goals. It's
finally nice to come close. I know we have them at Thanksgiving, so
hopefully we'll get them back then."

Michigan 4, Boston College 3

Tenth-ranked Michigan kicked off the season with a 4-3 overtime win
over #2/#3 Boston College at the Ice Breaker Cup in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Wolverines blew a two-goal third period lead, only to win it in
the extra session when Boston College forward Dan Bertram tried to
clear the puck near the Eagles net only to have it go off one of his
own players and into the net. Freshman center Louie Caporusso got
credit for the game-winning goal.

Freshman Carl Hagelin put the Wolverines on the board 10:20 into the
first period on a feed from Caporusso.

The Wolverines extended their lead 9:39 into the second period when
Travis Turnbull beat Eagles netminder John Muse, but BC would cut the
lead in half with 4:03 left in the period when Ben Smith beat U-M
goalie Billy Sauer on a two-on-one.

Michigan would retake a two goal lead 7:13 into the third period when
Danny Fardig scored from Turnbull.

But just under two minutes later, Joe Whitney made it a 3-2 game when
left alone in front of the net.

The Eagles would tie the game with 6:17 left in regulation when
Caporusso lost the puck to Benn Ferriero, who put the puck past Sauer.

Then in overtime, the Eagles would cost themselves the game.

Sauer finished the game with 19 saves, while Muse had 24 saves for the Eagles.

A solid start for this young team, and they will face either Minnesota
or RPI tomorrow for the Ice Breaker championship.

The game time, however, will depend on the outcome of tonight's MN/RPI
game. Regardless of the outcome, the Gophers will play in the late
game tomorrow night. So if Minnesota wins, Michigan will face the
Gophers at 8:30 p.m. ET. If RPI wins, Michigan will face them at 5:30
p.m. ET. The game can be seen on Fox Sports North, and if anyone is
able to record a copy for me, that'd be much appreciated! If you
can't watch the game, there is a "Live audio" link at

CCHA MEDIA DAY

The CCHA held their annual Media Day this afternoon.

In the preseason Coaches Poll, the Miami RedHawks took the top spot
with five first place votes and 114 points. One point behind them is
defending NCAA champion Michigan State, who took six first place votes
for 113 points.

Notre Dame, with one first place vote, was third, and the University
of Michigan followed behind in fourth. Ohio State, Nebraska-Omaha,
LSSU, and Northern Michigan were picked in the middle of the pack, and
Ferris State, Western Michigan, Alaska, and Bowling Green make up the
bottom.

In the Media Poll, the Spartans took top honors with 25 first place
votes and 701 points, while the RedHawks were voted second with 21
first place votes.

Notre Dame received 13 first place votes and was picked to finished
third, followed by the Wolverines, who somehow received four first
place votes.

Ohio State and Nebraska-Omaha were picked the same as the Coaches
Poll, however Western Michigan and Ferris State slide up to the seven
and eight spots, while LSSU and Northern Michigan move down to the
ninth and tenth spots respectively. Alaska and Bowling Green make up
the bottom.

Here's what U-M head coach Red Berenson had to say about the upcoming season:

"This will be a big year for Michigan in terms of a challenge. Last
year, we sat here and we knew we'd be a good team because of T.J.
Hensick and Matt Hunwick and Jack Johnson and Andrew Cogliano and our
big senior class, but all those guys are gone. We have 12 incoming
freshmen that will have to contribute to this year's team. We'll be
led by Kevin Porter who is college hockey's highest returning scorer
in his senior year, also should be led by Chad Kolarik, our only other
senior. On defense we should be led by Mark Mitera, who'll be a
junior, but we'll have four freshmen on defense. Certainly the depth
of our team should be good but the experience will be a questions
mark, so this will be the most interesting season in the recent past
for the coaching staff at Michigan and certainly for the players. I
like the incoming freshman from what I know of them and what I've
seen. We've got a long season. We have a tough schedule. We start off
against Boston College in the Ice Breaker in Minnesota and that'll
give us a bit of a wake-up call as to the level of hockey we'll have
to play. I'm looking forward to my 24th year, glad to be back. I don't
think these players should leave early, I'm glad to see Kevin Porter
come back for his senior year. Nothing has changed at Michigan."

ALL-CONFERENCE: Senior captain Kevin Porter was named to the CCHA
Preseason All-Conference First Team. Porter received eight first team
votes and 49 points (third highest). He is joined by Miami forwards
Nathan Davis and Ryan Jones, RedHawks defenseman Alec Martinez, Notre
Dame defenseman Kyle Lawson, and Michigan State netminder Jeff Lerg.

The Wolverines other senior forward Chad Kolarik was selected to the
Second Team, while junior defenseman Mark Mitera was an Honorable
Mention.

TV SCHEDULE: Michigan will hit the airwaves 24 times this season.

SEVEN WOLVERINES SELECTED IN NHL ENTRY DRAFT

Incoming freshman forward Max Pacioretty (PATCH-a-ready) was the
latest Wolverine to be selected in the first round as he went 22nd
overall to the Montreal Canadiens.

The USHL Rookie of the Year recorded 63 points during the regular
season and added another 10 points in the USHL playoffs.

Sporting a maize 'n blue tie, Patch said in a TV interview after being
drafted, "My grandma was from Montreal, so when I was younger I went
to a couple games. It just seems like a great atmosphere where
everybody loves hockey, so it's a great place to play.

"I'm a two-way player who gets all the little things done, such as
blocking shots. I think I offer more at the table than just all
offense."

Incoming freshman forward Aaron Palushaj was selected in the second
round (44th overall) by the St. Louis Blues.

Another top forward out of the USHL, Palushaj recorded 22 goals and 67
points in 56 games during the regular season, and he added another 11
points in eight playoff games.

Ontario recruit Louie Caporusso went in the third round (90th overall)
to the Ottawa Senators.

Caporusso led the St. Michael's Buzzers with 50 points in 37 games
during the regular season and another 20 points in 11 playoff games.

now for a web company. They are hoping to get it back soon, but if
not, you can still visit the site at its permanent home at:

http://www.mgoblue.com/schedule.cfm?section_id=286&top=2&level=3&season_id=1009

The Wolverines open the season on the road at the Ice Breaker Cup in
Minneapolis, MN, where they\'ll face Boston College in the opener and
either Minnesota or RPI the next day.

U-M will then open the CCHA regular season at Northern Michigan, then
return to Yost Ice Arena to host Boston University for a weekend
series. The rest of the nonconference schedule includes hosting
Minnesota and Wisconsin for the annual College Hockey Showcase, and
facing Providence in the opener of the Great Lakes Invitational.

The four road games at the start of the season will be Michigan\'s
longest stretch away from Yost all year. After that they play at least
one home game every other series.
