I didn't realize this before, but I went to the Official U-M hockey webpage
today and there were a few links where you can watch all home games using

A correction from last night, it was Jeff Jillson who fired the puck in
that got deflected to Langfeld, not Comrie. Mark Kosick got the other
assist on that goal.

- U-M's attendance of 6,694 last night set a Yost record for largest crowd
since its renovation a few years back.

- According to today's Ann Arbor News, you can watch highlights of last
night's game on Sunday's Spartan Sports Zone at 11:30am on Ch. 2 in the SE
Michigan area, then Tuesday night at 7pm on Wolverine Magazine with player
interviews and highlights.

-----------------
U-M IN THE PROS
-----------------

- Steve Shields made his start in goal last night for the San Jose Sharks
as they took on the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes scored early on, however
that goal was called back due to a player in the crease. Shields played a
very good game, as did the Coyotes' goalie who made many fantastic saves
down the stretch. At the end of regulation it was a 1-1 tie. Then just 37
seconds into overtime, Phoenix got by the Sharks defense for a breakaway
and was able to put it over the shoulder of Shields for the victory.
Shields (0-2-2) finished with 15 saves on 17 shots.

- Former Wolverine Mike Legg has joined the Columbus Chill of the East
Coast Hockey League. In his first game he got an assist on the Chill's
first goal as they defeat the Hampton Road Admirals 5-3.

- Former Wolverine David Harlock got his 1st goal of the season as the New
York Islanders lose to the Dallas Stars 4-2.

- Jason Botterill had a goal, David Roberts added two assists, and Marty
Turco made 34 saves as the Michigan K-Wings down the Orlando Solar Bears
6-2 last night (IHL).

- Cam Stewart got his league leading 17th goal of the season and Brian
Wiseman added an assist as the Houston Aeros shutout Chicago 2-0 (IHL).

- John Madden got a pair of assists as the Albany River Rats defeated
Hershey 2-1 (AHL).

That's all for now. Another update after the game tonight.

When I sent out the first report, Miami was leading OSU 1-0 in the 3rd
period. The final is now in, and Ohio State has won 2-1.

Also, FOX Sports Net has gone a little cheap on hockey coverage this
season. Instead of running until 10pm like last year, they will now end
games right after that final buzzer without a final recap, post game
interviews, highlights, statistics, and so on.

In a SUPERB game, Michigan State got on the board first with a Mike York
goal. York held the puck by the boards before moving to the front of the
net, used a few screens, and got it by Josh Blackburn. Michigan would
respond shorthanded when Dale Rominski skated around the edge, by the
defenseman, circled in front of the net, got Joe Blackburn to go down, and
flipped it on in.

The game winner would come in the 3rd period on the power play. Mike
Comrie's shot from the point would get deflected right to Josh Langfeld,
who fired it over the shoulder of Joey for the game winner. The power play
goal would snap MSU's streak of 30 penalty kills in a row.

This game was full of intensity as neither team backed down to the final
buzzer. Lots of checking and physical play, and great saves by both goalies.

Your final in Ann Arbor, Michigan 2, Michigan State 1.

Attendance: 6,694
Referee: Piotrowski

Next game is tomorrow night at Yost against Notre Dame. The game can be
seen on Comcast Network in SE Michigan.

Looks like Michigan was out trick or treating tonight and got sick from the
candy. I don't have many details right now, but Michigan got plastered by
Northern Michigan 6-1 tonight. Langfeld got Michigan's lone goal in the
1st period. NMU scored four times in the 2nd period, forcing Berenson to
pull Blackburn and put in O'Malley. NMU scored two more times in the 3rd
and just shut down the Wolverines.

2nd Period
Mike Van Ryn (Huntzicker, Kosick) - Power Play

I listened to the game on Real Audio and Blackburn sounded like he played a
great game in net. There were a lot of penalties once again as it seemed
like they never played 5-on-5 hockey. Alaska scored mid-to-late 3rd period
and kept the pressure going till the buzzer, but couldn't get it in as
Michigan holds on to improve to 4-1-0 overall. Michigan takes on Bowling
Green on Devil's Night, then Northern Michigan on Halloween. Both games
are at Yost.

U-M NEWS
---------------

-- Freshman Craig Murray remains out of the line up due to a left-leg
ailment. They hope he'll be back to normal when they return from Alaska.

-- Freshman Mike Comrie took honors as the CCHA Rookie of the Week. Comrie
had two goals and two assists Friday night during the Wolverines 6-5 OT win
over Niagara. Freshman goaltender Josh Blackburn won the award last week.

---------------
U-M IN THE PROS NEWS
---------------

-- Former Wolverines Matt Herr and Bill Muckalt went head-to-head for the
first time last night as the Canucks took on the Capitals. Matt Herr would
go pointless and end up with a penalty, however Bill Muckalt would score
the game winner for Vancouver at 8:56 of the 2nd period. Muckalt has now
scored two games in a row.

-- Jason Botterill has been transferred from the Dallas Stars back to the
Michigan K-Wings of the IHL

-- The following information is from The Official Houston Aeros Homepage
(http://www.aeros.com/):

AEROS BOAST THE IHLS TOP FOUR SCORERS: Heading into last nights action,
Houston boasted the leagues top four scorers as All-Star C Brian Wiseman
(3-7-10) sits atop the IHL points list, while LW Cam Stewart (7-2-9) ranks
second, LW Sean Pronger (6-2-8) is third and All-Star D Greg Hawgood
(0-7-7) stands fourth. In addition second-year D Jeff Tory (2-4-6) is tied
for fifth. Stewart and Pronger rank 1-2 in goal scoring, while Hawgood and
Tory rank 1-2 in scoring among league defensemen.

STEWART MAKES HISTORY WITH TWO HAT TRICKS, EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS:
LW Cam Stewart made team history last week when he became the first Aeros
player to record hat tricks in back-to-back games. He scored three goals at
Las Vegas on Oct. 13 and responded with a career-high 3-1-4 at Kansas City
on Oct. 16. For his efforts, Stewart became the first Aeros honored this
season as the IHL Player of the Week. The team career leader with three hat
tricks, he leads the IHL in goals and ranks second in points with 7-2-9 in
five games. He had a four-game point scoring streak snapped at Kansas City
on Oct. 17 and needs just 11 more goals this season to match his career
high (18 set last year).

TOP LINE ADJUSTS TO CHANGE: Last year, the Aeros top line featured former
University of Michigan teammates C Brian Wiseman, LW Cam Stewart and RW
David Oliver, who combined to rack up 82-126-208 as each set new personal
scoring highs. This year, Wiseman (3-7-10), and Stewart (7-2-9) are teamed
with RW Jeff Christian (2-3-5) and the trio hasnt missed a beat, combining
for 12-12-24 in Houstons first five games. Wiseman, who is riding a
four-game point streak, collected 1-1-2 at Kansas City on Oct. 16 to record
his 34th multi-point game in 83 outings since joining the Aeros last season.

-- David Oliver is now playing for the Ottawa Senators

-- One more note, if you're not doing anything Friday night (Michigan is at
Alaska), go check out former Wolverines Brian Wiseman, Cam Stewart, and
Blake Sloan as they lead the Houston Aeros to battle at the Palace of
Auburn Hills against the Detroit Vipers. Friday night, Oct. 23, 6:30pm.

GAME REPORT
---------------

This was my first game at Yost Ice Arena this season. When the game
started, I wondered "Where is everyone?!" There was probably only 5,000
people at the start of the game. The place seemed pretty empty and the
section I was sitting in (15) there was a big "V" gap of missing bodies.
The official attendance was just over 6,100.

I got to see why the Purple Eagles gave Michigan such a battle last night.
They have good speed out there, beating Michigan to the puck and their
goalie was on top of his game. Kevin O'Malley got the nodding start over
Josh Blackburn. Michigan's defense looked alright to begin with. Once
again Michigan held its opponent to under 20 shots the entire game. I
believe Michigan ended up with somewhere around 30 shots on the night.

The first period there was no scoring, but many great chances. Mike Comrie
received a PERFECT centering pass about 8 to 10 feet in front of the net
with no one around him. He held his stick up high and one time a HUGE slap
shot, however he slapped it right into the Niagara goalie. Good back and
forth action. Both teams took some penalties. O'Malley beat up someone on
Niagara's team, too. That was cool. The Niagara player somehow ended up
on top of O'Malley, then when O'Malley tried to get up he got held down and
rolled around on the ground. O'Malley finally had enough, got on his
knees, and started laying in some right hands (didn't drop his gloves,
though). The referee finally blew the whistle and gave the Niagara player
a penalty for in the crease interference. Great stuff!

The Wolverines would get their only goal of the night in the 2nd period by
Justin Clark. Michigan had a few shots in front of the net before Clark
was able to slam it in. With under 2 minutes left in the period, Michigan
would get a penalty. Michigan had a few "dumb" penalties on the night.
Niagara would take advantage of this and tie up the game with about 30
seconds left in the 2nd period.

The 3rd period Michigan just fell apart. They had more than enough good
chances, but couldn't connect on anything. Their defensive play became
sloppy. Simply put, they looked confused out there. Niagara would get the
go ahead game winning goal somewhere around the middle of the period.
Michigan would get a power play chance, but couldn't get anything to go in.
Late in the period Mike Van Ryn took a double elbow to the chin and his
head bounced off glass. He got up and headed to the bench. I later found
out (as I will talk more about in a minute) that he was a little shaken at
the time, but didn't get hurt. The Wolverines fall to the Purple Eagles
2-1.

Kevin O'Malley looked solid in goal. He made a few big saves on breakaways
and did a good job of keeping the puck out of the net. He's also not
afraid to take some swings at the opponent when they're in his space. Will
be interesting to see who starts next weekend's games at Alaska. Niagara
impressed me with their play tonight and I'm sure impressed all the coaches
of the CCHA, which will surely help their chances of applying for CCHA
membership.

---------------
POST GAME REPORT
---------------

During the 2nd intermission I got to meet Cathy Van Ryn. Cathy is a
frequent visitor to my webpage and stopped by my seat to introduce herself.
After a nice chat with her, I asked her if it'd be alright to go into the
lockerroom after the game. She said that she'd have Mike take me on a
quick tour of it afterwards.

After the game, I waited around with her and her husband and the other
families waiting for their boys to come out. We waited for about a half
hour guessing either Red was giving them a nice long talk tonight or he got
last into the showers, since she said last weekend after the LSSU game he
was in and out of there in no time. We talked to one of the equipment
managers (can't remember his name; he sharpens the skates) and he filled
them in on what happened to Mike near the end of the 3rd period (since
theycouldn't really see it from their seats). He said that Mike took the
double elbow under his chin and hit the boards. Mike was okay, though it
could have been bad had it not been for the new helmets. Of course, with
what happened to Matzka last week, he said they are very sensitive about
blows to the head. He also said it looks like they'll be doing an ego
check at the door after the game play tonight.

Mike finally came out and Cathy introduced me to him. We all talked for a
minute and then Cathy asked if he could take me on a tour of the lockerroom
real quick. He agreed to it and we walked up the stairs and into the
lockerroom. Saw Red Berenson sitting in his office as we walked by. He
showed me everything from the bathroom to the weight room. The press
conference lounge (where I saw Antoine Pitts of the Ann Arbor News) is for
post game comments/questions. He said they usually have a ping pong table
in there, but it wasn't there tonight. He showed me where they sharpen
their skates, tape their sticks up, we walked through the main player
lockerroom and how it was arranged. Defensemen on one side, forwards on
the other, goalies on another side. They also have a list of goals for the
season posted on the wall, which he said they aren't doing too good on
right now. We walked down to the players lounge where they can all hang
out and watch TV. Also his other locker in there with workout clothes and
shoes, all donated to them by Nike. Then we went to the weight room.
There's a computer in there where players just type in their name and it'll
bring up what workout they're suppose to do that day. We started to head
on out and he showed me the staircase they walk down when going back on to
the ice. At the top they have pictures of the '98 Championship and a Go
Blue (if I remember correctly) sign that they all punch on their way out
(much like Notre Dame has for their football team, for anyone that's seen
one of their games). He said it's probably the best lockerroom of any
college hockey team. We left the lockerroom and headed back down to his
parents. We talked a little bit more then headed on out. A great guy with
great parents and I'd like to thank them for the good time tonight.

Thanks to my brother who took the time do this tonight:

Blackburn recorded his first official career shutout as Michigan just
dominated LSSU tonight at Yost. They wore their special occasion maize
jerseys, sporting the new jersey style (all three jerseys are of the same
design except for the color - see note below on jerseys). The banner
ceremony featured none other than Marty Turco, unveiling the Championship
Banner with Bubba Berenzweig before a sold out crowd.

Everyone attending the game got little replica (cheap ass) banners and a
1998-99 schedule poster.

The Game
--------
As I said, Michigan dominated from the start.. I believe the final shot
total was M-40, LSSU 14, but you can verify that. SHEGOS was the ref..
and man, was he on fire tonight, calling a bus load of penalties, but the
majority of which were on LSSU. LSSU played very dirty, which seems to be
a reputation they are holding up. Many hits after the whistle or behind
the refs back. Scott Matzka took a wicked cross check to the head late in
the third and left the game (I think a concussion). There was quite a bit
of blood on the ice.. and he almost collapsed when they stood him up, so
it took a few guys to carry him off. Hope he is okay, he looked sharp in
the first two periods.

MIKE COMRIE!! Can you say: "Superstar"?? I can't believe they convinced
this guy to play college hockey and not go pro. Man, he is something, and
is going to be one hell of a player during his time here. Only 5-10,
172lbs.. he is quick, agile.. very, very smart with the puck and made at
least half a dozen LSSU players look like complete dumbasses deking the
puck. The interesting thing about the guy - he is NOT afraid to
check. I think he had like 200 penalty minutes for his junior team
last year. Wow! He got the second goal of the game.

Other cool things:

Kosick and Comrie on the same line - oh yeah!

Jillson - 6-3, 220lbs freshman.. looked solid, as did the entire defense
tonight (interesting to compare to this time last year). He is HUGE..
and there were at least two times where he wanted to take someone
one-on-one. I tell you, put him and Vancik (6-2, 212lbs freshman)
together and you have a defensive wall. I believe he played most of the
night with Huntzicker and Van Ryn. For a big guy with obvious goon
qualities, Jillson impressed me with his agility and stick handling
   capabilities.

BUBBA! Captain Bubba looked great.. very fast, always on the puck
tonight. He also stood up for his teammates. Mid way through the third,
the puck rolled down to Blackburn, who covered it up and was immediately
sprayed in the face by a LSSU player. Well, this didn't sit too well with
Bubba... who circled around the back of the net, came up from behind the
Laker player and gave him a very nice face wash <g> Hehe.. he got a
standing ovation for it.. and somehow, the Lakers got a penalty too, so
they offset and neither team came out with an advantage.

Blackburn looked very good. He stoned two players on breakaways and did a
good job of covering up the puck and not allowing big rebounds. I'm not
sure this was the best test for him, though, as he only faced 14 shots and
the defense really helped keep the puck out of the zone tonight.

Crowd
-----
Awesome tonight. The student section was on their game too. Nicks
danced, the superfan danced to the Blues Brothers.. so, it was a good
night. We mainly picked on #29, Rob Galatiuk, the sophomore Laker goalie
and his partner in crime, #19, Jeff Cheeseman. Galatiuk needs to do his
homework before the next time he comes down to Yost. He made the mistake,
numerous times, of removing his mask. A split second after he did, the
"Ugly goalie!!" chant started. He looked rather pissed the first time,
giving a "fuck you" type smile to the crowd. hehe.. Oh.. and he has some
mental problem that causes him to push the goal off the moorings everytime
someone is about to score. He did it tonight about four or five times.
One time, Comrie was off to the right of the crease and shooting the puck
at him. Off the first rebound, he popped it off Galatiuk's pad and it
appeared to cross the goal line, but then the net got knocked off by
Galatiuk. of course, the fans counted that goal.. so I guess the final
was really 3-0.

The Cheeseman.. hehe.. well, obviously his name prompts insults. You
could always hear the "we want Cheeseman" calls when he wasn't out there,
but then when he got on the ice the "Cheeseman sucks!" chants started.
THere was also a short "CHEESE" -- "MAN" chant, mimmicking the "GO"...
"BLUE" cheer.

OH.. biggest moment - when the students spotted Tom Goss in one of the
press boxes. Oh man.. many "You suck"'s and "You should've taken that job
with the 49'ers".. "Our football stadium looks like a carrousel"..plus a
big "The Halo SUCKS!" chant. Hope he got the message and does something
about that. I'm surprised he would show his face at the games after
approving the ticket price increase.

Jerseys
-------
My buddies and I agree it is just another scam by the athletic dept. to
get more money, as fans are sure to out and buy the new ones. One
noticeable thing missing - the M with the hockey sticks patch on the
shoulders. I'm sure next year's jersey will feature them... jerseys must
be modular and "upgradable" <g>

Anyway.. that's all I can think of right now. I got a program.. and none
other than Greg Daddario is on the front (just standing there, smiling..
wonder how he pulled that off...?). There's another loser cowbell
person.. we have the superfan and the other cool guy in front of us.. then
cow-bitch is still there (unfortunately).. and some other student a few
sections to the right of us has a cowbell, but it sounds REALLY ghetto.
Oh well...

I think I will need your help to get the DX "SUCK IT" chant going sometime.
  Shegos is a good candidate.

Oh.. that reminds me.. a ref in the second took a nasty shot to the face
(puck). While the other refs were over there aiding him, someone yelled
"Hey Shegos, why don't you get down on your knees and help him out?! We
hear you're good at that!"

It was pretty cold..

----------------

One more brief note. I will be driving downstate this weekend and
attending the Niagara game on Saturday. Anyone going to the game that is
interested in getting together, e-mail me about it.

Michigan 2, Lake Superior State 0
---------------

The Wolverines opened the CCHA season with a shut out victory over the
Lakers. Michigan got on the board just 3:26 into the game on a Dale
Rominski power play goal (assisted by Crozier and Van Ryn). Unofficially
at the end of the 1st period it was Michigan 2, LSSU 0. The reason is
because Hayes shot the puck in the net, but the net got dislodged just
before it went in. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I believe the
WTKA announcers said that Hayes got tied up and was turning around and
knocked the net off. The fans, of course, didn't like the call, so counted
the goal anyways. Michigan's second goal came in the 2nd period as
freshman Mike Comrie fired it in (assist to Scott Matzka). Just listening
to WTKA, it sounded like Josh Blackburn made a few very good saves to keep
Michigan in the lead. The offense got a lot of good chances. I don't have
the finally tally (I stopped listening to the game after the 2nd period as
I had some stuff to do), but at the end of the 2nd period, Michigan was
outshooting LSSU somewhere around 30-5. Final score is 2-0 (or 3-0,
depending how you wanna count it).

Sorry I don't have a full game report, but my bro' didn't send it to me.
He has a nice long drive back to St. Louis, so hopefully he'll send it to
me tomorrow sometime.

WOLVERINE NEWS
---------------

Tonight the Wolverines open up the CCHA season against Lake Superior State.
The game starts at 5 p.m. The raising of the banner will take place 15
minutes before the game, I believe. There have also been conflicting
reports on how many replica banners will be handed out to the fans. The
Michigan Daily first reported that only 500 banners will be made and handed
out, however a few days ago the Ann Arbor News said that they will be
handed out to all the fans. Well, as I said before, if any going really
wants one, get there early.

Anyone not going to the game can listen to it LIVE on WTKA. A real audio
link can be found at http://www.wkta.com/ or on my webpage at the top
there's a link. Also, for anyone not going, join me in the chat room
tonight on my webpage (http://longyear.acs.nmu.edu/~japaul/index.html)
during the game. I should be in there around 4:45pm, so wait a few minutes
if I'm not there.

The Michigan Daily reported earlier this week that Michigan has finally
bought a new Zamboni that will debut next weekend when Michigan takes on
Niagara. I'm sure you all remember the Miami game when the old one broke
down.

MICHIGAN NEWS
---------------

One important note for anyone going to the game this Sunday against Lake
Superior State. As you know, it's the raising of the banner. When they
did this back in '96, they handed out small banners to all the fans (as far
as I know). This year, despite the ticket increase, they have decided to
go cheap and only product about 500 banners which will be passed out on a
first come basis, so if you want one, GET THERE EARLY.

---------------

Assistant Captain Dale Rominski should be back in the lineup for this
Sunday's game. Rominski had been placed on the academically ineligible to
participate list by the University last week, however it appears to have
been a mistake. According to the Michigan Daily:

"Rominski had taken an independent study course over the summer to qualify
for senior status. Rominski passed the class, but those credits had not
been recorded.

"This mistake left Rominski off of the eligibility list the team received
on Friday, and left Berenson unhappy."

---------------
ROSTER UPDATE
---------------

As just mentioned, Dale Rominski will be back in the lineup for this
Sunday's game. Also back in the lineup will be Mark Kosick, who had been
recovering from a partially separated shoulder, and Sean Peach, who had
been having a sore foot caused by the laces on his new skates.

Questionable for this Sunday's game is freshman Craig Murray. The Michigan
Daily reports that Murray "left practice early yesterday, with an unknown
ailment in his leg. Berenson said that if Murray is healthy, he may get the
nod to center his own line on Sunday."

FORMER WOLVERINES NEWS

From The Associated Press:

WASHINGTON 4, DETROIT 3

DETROIT (AP) - Matt Herr, playing less than an hour from his college rink,
had a goal and an assist to help the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory
over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night in the exhibition finale for
both teams. Rookie Stacy Roest helped his chances of making the Red Wings
(2-6-1) by scoring the only goal of the first period. Herr, a rookie from
the University of Michigan, tied the game 37 seconds into the second period
with a short-handed goal, his second in six preseason games. The Capitals'
Ken Klee and Detroit's Martin Lapointe traded power-play goals to make it
2-2. Adam Oates and Trevor Halverson also scored for Washington (6-2).
Sergei Fedorov had the Red Wings other goal.

HEAD COACH RED BERENSON

On Josh Blackburn ...
"I thought he played well. He didn't know the shooters and there was a
bigger crowd (than last night)."

On Mike Comrie ...
"I think Mike is going to be a special player. He had two great hits. He's
the smallest player on our team and he leveled two guys in the first period."

CENTER MIKE COMRIE

"I get more comfortable every time I step on the ice. (As a team) we come
together more and more every day."

On his big hits ...
"You got to dish it out as much as you get hit."

ASSISTANT CAPTAIN BOBBY HAYES

"We played a good first period, but the rest of the game was not up to our
standards."

On the crowd ...
"I just want to thank everyone for coming out, especially the students. If
fans want to see some good hockey, we're going to give it to them."

Oct. 6 at 6:15pm, The Red Berenson Show airs LIVE on WTKA (www.WTKA.com).
You can listen to the broadcast using Real Audio. If you miss the show, I
will try to have a summary of each week's show put up immediately following
the broadcast.

Oct. 11 Michigan opens up the CCHA season against Lake Superior State. The
game is at 5pm (instead of the usual 7pm) and is also on a SUNDAY. This
game will also have a ceremony celebrating the 1998 NCAA National
Championship with the raising of the banner. The game can be listened to
on WTKA (www.WTKA.com).

---------------
Wolverines out of action
---------------

Sophomore center Mark Kosick is recovering from a partial dislocated
shoulder. Berenson said last week on The Red Berenson Show that Mark
wanted to play this weekend, but they weren't going to risk it. Kosick
will return to full go this week and play in this Sunday's game.

The next three are from the Ann Arbor News:

Junior Andrew Merrick caught the flu and didn't play in the weekend's
games. He, too, should return this week.

Senior Assistant Captain Dale Rominski is on the academically ineligible to
participate list and did not play in Saturday's game. No word on when he
will return.

Junior Sean Peach had a sore foot, but played through the Blue/White game
Friday, however sat out Saturday's game against Guelph. No word on his
return, either.

---------------
Wolverines in the Pros News
---------------

It appears that Jason Botterill has won a spot on the Dallas Stars' lineup.
Here's some info on Botterill that appeared in today's Dallas Morning News:

38 Jason Botterill
POSITION: Left wing
HT/WT: 6-4, 217
AGE: 22
ACQUIRED: First-round pick, 20th overall, in the 1994 draft.
THE UPSIDE: Impressed throughout pre-season with solid play. . . . Uses his
size to mix things up in the corners and create scoring opportunities.
THE DOWNSIDE: Has only four games of NHL experience and missed the first 24
games of last season with the Michigan K-Wings with a shoulder injury.

---------------

Rangers Acquire Knuble From Detroit

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers acquired right wing Mike Knuble from
the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday for a third-round pick in the 2000 draft.

Knuble, 26, had seven goals and six assists in 53 games for Detroit last
season. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has eight goals and six assists in 62
career games.

--------

Mike was interviewed later on during the Wings vs. Flyers game on FOX
Sports Net. Knuble sounded somewhat down on it, saying in a way you're
excited, but in a way you're depressed. He said it stinks to have to pack
up and move, but that you also gotta look at it as a good oppportunity
considering he didn't get much playing time in Detroit. He talked with the
Rangers today and they have a spot open for him. It's a business decision
and it's probably in his best interest.

The Red Wings said that Monday was draft day in which teams can protect 18
players (I think). Knuble was not going to be one of them and would
probably been taken by another team, so instead of losing Mike for nothing,
they decided to deal him away.
--------------

Matt Herr continues to fight for a spot on the Washington Capitals roster.
The following is from The Washington Post (9/30):

Wilson was pleased with the play of forward Matt Herr, who hopes to make
the roster and tonight played on the Capitals' top line with Joe Juneau and
Bondra.

"I liked the way he played – he didn't back down," Wilson said. "He was
skating, hitting and getting hit. I've liked his effort from Day One."

--------------

The Grand Rapids Griffins of the IHL assigned former Wolverine Kevin Hilton
to Alexandria of the WPHL.

--------------
Other notes
--------------
For those interested, I am now writing for Hockey's Future
(www.hockeysfuture.com). If you've never been to Hockey's Future, I
suggust you check it out. They have news and opinions on many different
leagues, and just the other week they added a "College On Ice" section. So
far only a few college teams are being covered and they are looking for
writers, so if you're interested, go there and apply.

That's all for now. Any comments/questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Just after the story that the Canucks wouldn't let Muckalt play in
pre-season games without a contract, this just in from Slam! Hockey
(http://www.canoe.com/Hockey/home.html):

Canucks sign two

VANCOUVER (CP) -- The Vancouver Canucks signed forwards Brad May and Bill
Muckalt on Wednesday. Terms were not announced.

May, a seven-year veteran, and Muckalt, a rookie, had been in training camp
without contracts and GM Brian Burke had told them they could not play in
preseason games until deals were signed. May, 26, was acquired from the
Buffalo Sabres last year along with a third-round draft pick for forward
Geoff Sanderson. He played in 27 games for Vancouver last season, scoring
nine goals and adding three assists.

Muckalt, 24, of Surrey, B.C., was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as
the best player in U.S. collegiate hockey last season. He had 32 goals and
35 assists in 46 games with the University of Michigan.

* Stars Sign Goaltender Turco (http://wire.ap.org)

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars have signed goaltender Marty Turco, the
all-time NCAA leader in victories and a leader on two national championship
teams at Michigan, to a two-year contract.

No further contract terms were released.

Turco, 23, led the Wolverines to national titles in 1996 and 1998. He
started four years at Michigan, becoming the nation's all-time victory
leader at 127.

Turco was a fifth-round selection of the Stars in the 1994 NHL Entry draft.
He'll report to Dallas on Thursday and participate in the Stars' rookie
camp, the team said.

----------

* Info on Turco's contract

This comes from the Ann Arbor News (http://aa.mlive.com):

Turco, the Stars' fifth-round pick in 1994, reportedly received a $500,000
signing bonus, along with a standard two-way minor league/NHL contract. The
deal is worth $60,000 in his first year if he plays in the minors or
$325,000 if he makes the pro team in his first year. He will likely begin
his career with Dallas' International Hockey League affiliate in Kalamazoo,
the Michigan K-Wings.

"It's exciting to sign your first NHL contract," Turco said Wednesday.
"There's been some weight lifted off: All the questions about when you're
going to sign, how much and when you're going to camp. It's a relief."

----------

* Botterill joins rookie camp for chance to become Star

By Bill Nichols / The Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com)

IRVING - His father was a minor league hockey player. His mother was an
Olympic speed skater. And his sister played on the Canadian Olympic hockey
team.

Jason Botterill, who helped Michigan win a national hockey title his junior
season, wants to add to the lengthy list of his family's athletic
accomplishments by breaking into the Stars' lineup.

With the Stars short on left wings, Botterill, Jamie Wright and Jon Sim
have chances to take advantage. Coach Ken Hitchcock expects to use five
left wings this season, but the Stars have lost Greg Adams, Benoit Hogue
and Juha Lind since last season.

"It was frustrating last year," said Botterill, 22. "Part of me would like
to say, 'Let's forget about last year.' But I learned a lot about myself
and I learned a lot about the pro game. I'm ready to battle for a position."

----------

* Muckalt and Herr remain unsigned (http://aa.mlive.com/)

According to The Ann Arbor News, Muckalt is still trying to work out a deal
with Vancouver:

"We have grown further apart than we were four months ago," said Muckalt's
agent, Mike Liut.

Liut also told the News that Muckalt will report to training camp--with or
without a contract.

Also, Matt Herr is still negotiating with the Washington Capitals. He said
he would not report without a contract.
