Michigan 6, Providence 0
Michigan got off to a slow start, but shook off the rust and got
stronger as the game wore on to defeat Providence, 6-0, and advance to
the Great Lakes Invitational championship game. They will face the
winner of the Michigan State vs. Michigan Tech contest later tonight.
The Wolverines were sloppy in the opening period, but despite getting
outshot 16-3 they capitalized on their chances and took a 2-0 lead on
goals by the returning Louie Caporusso and Aaron Palushaj.
In the second stanza, the Wolverines played much better and popped in
three more goals, but once again they were outshot 16-11. Anthony
Ciraulo scored a shorthanded goal on a beautiful centering pass by
Porter, then on the power play Porter fired in a one-timer from the
right circle to make it 4-0. Late in the period, freshman Ben Winnett
would steal the puck in the Friars' zone and place a wrist shot in the
far top corner for a 5-0 lead.
Travis Turnbull would cap off the scoring in the third period with a
shot through the five hole.
The championship game will start at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night at Joe
Louis Arena.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TV: Tomorrow night's championship game will NOT be
shown live on Fox Sports Detroit due to a Red Wings hockey game. It
will be shown locally on Comcast Local and according to the commercial
preview on a Fox Sports Plus (check your listings). According to
TVGuide.com, the championship game will be shown tape delayed on Fox
Sports Detroit late night at 12:30 a.m.
MITERA PROMOTED: Junior defenseman Mark Mitera has been promoted to an
alternate captain. Junior forward Tim Miller will no longer be
wearing the 'A'.
"Mitera definitely earned the 'A' and in Miller's case, I don?t think
it's helped him," U-M coach Red Berenson told TheWolverine.com. "I
think sometimes when players get a letter, it can be a burden on their
game and they're worried about too many things and I've told Timmy
Miller I don't want him to worry about being a captain at this point."

That's all for now...
