Michigan 5, Minnesota 1
After losing their previous six encounters with Minnesota, including a
4-3 loss at the start of the season, the Wolverines finally broke
through with a convincing 5-1 win tonight at Yost. It's their first
sweep of the College Hockey Showcase since 2002.
The seniors led the charge again as Kevin Porter had a four point
night and Chad Kolarik recorded three points.
Kolarik opened the scoring late in the first period putting a rebound
past Gophers goalie Jeff Frazee.
Kolarik would strike again on a nice feed by Porter 2:43 into the
second period on the power play to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.
The Gophers would go on the power play shortly thereafter, however it
was Porter taking advantage of a turnover by Frazee to put the
Wolverines ahead by three goals.
With 6:40 left in the second stanza, Ben Gordon would finally get the
Gophers on the scoreboard, but Porter would respond 3:25 later to give
Michigan a three goal lead heading into the third period.
Freshman Ben Winnett would score off a great feed by fellow classmate
Aaron Palushaj 4:59 into the third period to make it 5-1. Michigan
would continue to dominate the rest of the way to make it the final
score.
Junior netminder Billy Sauer finished the game with 26 saves, while
Frazee had 18 stops for the Gophers.
The Wolverines stay in Ann Arbor next weekend as they host Ohio State.
Showcase Update: Up in East Lansing, Michigan State and Wisconsin tied 4-4.
