Michigan 5, Northern Michigan 2
Quick update for the moment... more details later on MHNet.
The Michigan hockey team scored by committee tonight en route to a 5-2
victory over Northern Michigan University and earning U-M head coach
Red Berenson his 600th career win.
Five different Wolverines scored, while sophomore goalie Billy Sauer
came up big with 33 saves.
The game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Both goalies, in
fact, came up with several big saves that could have swung the game
either way. Tonight was Michigan's night, however, and the bounces
went their way.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Brandon
Naurato in front of the net. At the midway mark of the opening
stanza, freshman Anthony Ciraulo scored his first career goal when he
tipped a centering pass by Steve Kampfer past NMU netminder Bill
Zaniboni.
U-M then blew open the game early in the second period when Tim Miller
and Kevin Porter scored just 50 seconds apart.
Miller tapped a puck out of mid air past Zaniboni at 2:29, which was
upheld after video review. Then Porter banged a pass from T.J.
Hensick past Zaniboni at 3:29 for a shorthanded goal.
The Wildcats would finally get on the board a minute and a half later
when Mike Santorelli beat Sauer.
The Wolverines would extend their 4-1 lead early in the third period
when Andrew Cogliano found the top corner on the power play.
Just under two minute laters, Nick Sirota scored a fluky power play
goal that just kind of popped up and over Sauer to cap off the scoring.
Sauer improves to 14-8-0 this season, while Zaniboni, who made 26
saves, drops to 7-14-2.

That's all for now...
Go Blue!
