The Michigan vs. Michigan Tech game airs taped delayed tonight at 11
p.m. on Fox Sports Detroit. Do not read any further if you are
waiting to watch it and don't want the game spoiled.
In the opening game of the Great Lakes Invitational, Michigan State
dispatched Harvard, 5-2. The game was tied 2-2 midway through the
second period when Harvard's Dave MacDonald took a major penalty for
checking from behind. Amazingly, he only got a game misconduct,
despite the Spartan player reportedly needing 20 stitches to close the
gash in his forehead.
The Spartans would score on the ensuing power play, and score two more
unanswered goals in the third period to pull away.
The will meet the Michigan Wolverines in the championship game. The
Wolverines took care of Michigan Tech, 4-1.
It was expected to be a battle of offense versus defense as the
Wolverines entered the game third in the nation in scoring, while the
Huskies were ninth in goals against allowing just over two goals per
game. In the end, the Wolverines offense proved to be too much.
Senior captain Matt Hunwick scored his first two goals of the season
and Kevin Porter added a pair of assists to lead the Wolverines.
Hunwick got U-M on the board with 1:17 remaining in the opening
stanza, then the Wolverines poured it on in the second period with
three more goals by Travis Turnbull, Hunwick, and Brian Lebler.
Sophomore netminder Billy Sauer would see his shutout bid ruined with
1:16 left in the third period when Tyler Shelast scored on the power
play.
The Wolverines and Spartans last met in the GLI championship two years
ago, when the Spartans won 2-1 in overtime.
The puck drops tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on
Fox Sports Detroit.
