KOLARIK HAT TRICK LIFTS WOLVERINES, 6-3
Michigan fans better start a stockpile of hats if Chad Kolarik
continues his ways.
For the second consecutive game Kolarik netted a hat trick, this time
lifting the Wolverines to a 6-3 win over Miami. All three of
Kolarik's goals came in the third period and were all unassisted.
Just like last Saturday against Connecticut, he completed the feat
with an empty net goal to ice the game.
But the game wasn't as easy as the final score makes it out to be.
The RedHawks got on the board late in the first period when Gary
Steffes beat U-M netminder Billy Sauer with a shot off his glove.
Miami outshot the Wolverines 9-5 in the opening stanza.
The Wolverines would tie the contest 5:59 into the second period when
David Rohlfs took a feed from T.J. Hensick and beat Miami goalie
Charlie Effinger.
Just under two minutes later, Andrew Cogliano would put the Wolverines
ahead with a shorthanded breakaway goal.
Bill Loupee would tie the game back up with 1:37 left in the period (I
hope we're not starting that bad habit again!), but 27 seconds later
Kevin Porter put in a rebound off a Rohlfs shot to give U-M a 3-2 edge
heading into the third period.
The Chad Kolarik Show would start at 10:58 of the third when he would
steal the puck and beat Effinger. Then 3:37 later he would carry the
puck down ice and beat Effinger again, this time during a two-on-one
rush with Cogliano, to make it 5-2.
Justin Mercier would score for the RedHawks 1:03 later on the power
play when they overloaded the front of the net and beat Sauer to make
it 5-3.
But Kolarik put the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal with
1:01 left to complete the hat trick.
Sauer finished the game with 22 saves for the Wolverines, while
Effinger had 14 stops for the RedHawks.
Michigan and Miami wrap up the weekend series tomorrow night at Yost.
Game time is 8:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on CSTV.
