MGoBlue.com has issued the following press release of several players
who will be participating in the Alumni games. You'll note that
Brendan Morrison and Jason Botterill will be coaching the 1996 team.
Most likely that's because Morrison had hip surgery this summer, and
Botterill was forced to retire last year after suffering a concussion.
Alumni Showcase Highlighted by 1996 Reunion
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team will
welcome back its alumni at the annual Summer Hockey Showcase on
Friday, Aug. 4, at Yost Ice Arena. Three games, featuring alumni of
various ages, will be played throughout the afternoon and evening.
Nearly every member of the 1996 national championship team will be
returning to Ann Arbor in celebration of its 10-year anniversary.
The 2006 Summer Hockey Showcase, sponsored by the University of
Michigan Credit Union, The Rounick Family, Ann Holmes/Sue Wickett,
Naylor Motor Sales, Thalner Electronic Labs, Brown Jug, The Cemack
Family, Wally and Mickey Grant, and the Dekers Blue Line Club will
feature three separate contests at Yost Ice Arena. Alumni between the
ages of 35-50 will play at 4:30 p.m., while the 50-plus/celebrity game
will begin at 5:30 p.m. The high point of the evening is the 7 p.m.
match-up between the 1996 national championship squad and the recent
graduates and other players under 35.
Among some of the confirmed participants in the 2006 showcase are:
• 1996 national championship team -- Twenty-one players from
Michigan's eighth national-title team will return to Yost Ice Arena.
The confirmed list includes: John Arnold, Bubba Berenzweig, Peter
Bourke, Justin Clark, Greg Crozier, Greg Daddario, Chris Fox, Chris
Frescoln, Steven Halko, Bobby Hayes, Matt Herr, Mike Legg, Gregg
Malicke, Sean Ritchlin, Dale Rominski, Mark Sakala, Harold Schock and
Blake Sloan. Brendan Morrison and Jason Botterill will be coaching the
team from behind the bench.
• Red Berenson -- Michigan's head coach for the past 22 seasons and a
17-year veteran of the National Hockey League. Has led U-M to NCAA
Tournament appearances in 16 straight seasons.
• Mike Cammalleri -- Played with the Wolverines from 2000-02 and was a
two-time All-American. Played first full season with Los Angeles Kings
in 2005-06 after playing parts of two previous campaigns in L.A. Had a
breakout season in 2005-06, tallying 26 goals and 29 assists in 80
games.
• Andy Hilbert -- A forward for U-M in 2000 and '01, Hilbert led the
Wolverines in scoring in 2001 with 64 points in 41 games. With Chicago
and Pittsburgh in 2005-06, Hilbert set career highs in games played
(47), goals (12), assists (15) and points (27). He recently signed a
contract with the New York Islanders for 2006-07.
• Jeff Jillson -- Jillson played three years at Michigan (1999-2001)
receiving All-America honors in 2000 and '01. He spent most of the
2005-06 season with the Buffalo Sabres' AHL affiliate before being
recalled and inserted into the lineup in the NHL Eastern Conference
Finals.
• Mike Komisarek -- Komisarek played two seasons for Michigan
(2000-01, '01-02), earning All-America honors as a sophomore. After
spending parts of two seasons with Montreal the defenseman played the
full year with the Canadiens in 2005-06 and inked a new deal with them
in the offseason.
• Josh Langfeld -- Langfeld, who was a four-year letterman at U-M
(1998-2001), is well remembered for scoring the national
championship-winning in overtime in 1998 over Boston College. He
played the 2005-06 season with the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins,
earning two goals and 10 assists in 57 games.
• Jed Ortmeyer -- A two-time captain, Ortmeyer led the Maize and Blue
to consecutive Frozen Four appearances in 2002 and '03. He has
flourished in two seasons as a checking-line forward with the New York
Rangers. In 2005-06 he played 78 games, notching two goals and five
assists.
Other former Wolverines who are expected to appear are David Harlock
(1990-93), Dave Huntzicker (1998-01), Kevin O'Malley (1999-2002), Pat
Neaton (1990-93), Billy Powers (1986-88), Alex Roberts (1987-90),
David Roberts (1990-93), Chris Tamer (1990-93), Jay Vancik
(1999-2002). In addition, the graduating classes of 2005 (Charlie
Henderson, Milan Gajic, Nick Martens, David Moss, Reilly Olson, Eric
Nystrom, Brandon Rogers, Jason Ryznar, Eric Werner, Mike Woodford) and
2006 (Andrew Ebbett, Brandon Kaleniecki, Noah Ruden) will have
perfect attendance. The Michigan Alumni Pep Band will also be in
attendance.
Celebrity skaters in the 5:30 p.m. contest include: John Bacon (author
of Blue Ice) and Chuck Kaiton (Carolina Hurricanes radio play-by-play).
Tickets for the 2006 Summer Hockey Showcase can be purchased at the
Yost Ice Arena box office beginning at 3:30 p.m. when the doors open.
All proceeds will benefit the Michigan Hockey Scholarship Endowment
Fund. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.
