I was at the NMU game tonight, so didn't get to listen to the U-M game. But judging by the box score and reaction I'm reading, it wasn't pretty. Essentially everything that went right last night went wrong tonight.
The Wolverines got behind 3-0 by the middle of the second period before Chad Kolarik finally made it 3-1 with a power play goal late in the second period. But Bowling Green would score two power play goals in the first 3:35 of the third period to go up 5-1. Kevin Porter netted a power play goal at 9:31 of the third to cap the scoring.
Noah Ruden was pulled in favor of Billy Sauer after the fifth goal. The Michigan defense gave up 49 (!) shots on goal. Ruden stopped 31 and Sauer turned aside all 13 he faced. Jon Horrell made 31 saves for the Falcons.
The Wolverines played another disciplined game, taking just 8 penalties for 16 minutes while Bowling Green took 10 for 20 minutes. U-M's power play went 2-for-8, but their penalty kill had a bad night as BGSU converted 3-of-6 opportunities.
About the only good news tonight is that save for Miami, who scored two goals in the final 22 seconds of the third period to come from behind and beat Western Michigan 4-3, all the other teams ahead of the Wolverines in the CCHA standings--NMU, Lake State, and Michigan State--lost.
Michigan heads back to East Lansing next Friday to face Michigan State at Munn, then Saturday the two teams will battle at Joe Louis Arena.
That's all for now...
Go Blue!
