Quick update...
Michigan finally broke their four-game losing streak by defeating Nebraska-Omaha
4-2 at Yost Ice Arena tonight.
The Wolverines were led by seniors Andrew Ebbett and Brandon Kaleniecki, who
each had three point nights.
Trailing 1-0 in the opening period, Kaleniecki tied the game on the power play
when he tipped in a shot by Ebbett past UNO goalie Jared Kaufmann.
U-M took the lead with 2:29 left in the first period when defenseman Jason Dest
scored a shorthanded goal. Kaleniecki cleared the puck off the boards and
Ebbett raced to pick it up. He then setup Dest with a drop pass, and Dest fired
it high glove side on Kaufmann.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-1 at 6:05 of the second period when
Andrew Cogliano threw a blind pass from behind the net to the slot where Travis
Turnbull buried it for the only goal of the period.
The Mavericks cut the lead to one goal just 3:02 into the third period when an
innocent shot by Rob Chappell from the point deflected off a U-M defender and
past Billy Sauer.
UNO continued to apply pressure and had a few great scoring chances during the
period, but Sauer held his ground. Finally with 26 seconds left, Ebbett iced
the game with an empty net goal.
Sauer was strong in net and finished with 27 saves, while Kaufmann made 25 stops
for UNO.
The Wolverines are now eight points behind Miami in the CCHA standings and can
make up more ground tomorrow night. The RedHawks are playing St. Lawrence in a
pair of nonconference games this weekend.
