Quick update...
Michigan 5, St. Lawrence 2
Andrew Ebbett put the Wolverines ahead 1-0 in the first period on the power
play. Brandon Kaleniecki took the shot that was stopped by St. Lawrence
goalie Mike McKenna, but Ebbett put in the rebound for his first goal of
the season. Eric Werner also assisted on the goal.
In the second period, T.J. Hensick put his first puck in the net this
season with the assist going to Werner. The goal came six seconds after a
Michigan power play expired.
St. Lawrence cut the lead in half at 8:50. Simon Watson's shot was kicked
out by Al Montoya, but T.J. Trevelyan put in the rebound.
At the 11:30 mark, Jason Ryznar took a penalty and went to the box. Then
just as he got out two minutes later, the puck came to him all alone, only
to get hauled down from behind. Ryznar was awarded a penalty shot and he
converted it to make it 3-1 Wolverines.
"It was the first penalty shot ever in my life, and it was quite the
thrill," Ryznar said, adding that he didn't really know what he was going
to do when he skated in on the penalty shot, so he just went in and shot
the puck.
In the third period, St. Lawrence cut the lead back to one goal when Kyle
Rank scored on the power play. Mike Madill took the shot that was tipped
by Trevelyan over to Rank, and he buried the puck past Montoya.
But late in the third period the Wolverines would ice the game. Gajic
found Werner all alone in the slot, and Werner beat McKenna low stick side
to make it 4-2.
Then the captain, Eric Nystrom, would end the scoring with a shorthanded,
empty net goal with two seconds remaining to make it 5-2.
The Wolverines peppered St. Lawrence much like they did New Hampshire the
previous night. McKenna stopped 38 shots for the Saints.
After the game on WTKA, coach Red Berenson called it a good win, saying
last night's outcome against New Hampshire wasn't positive and they needed
to establish a better home ice presence. Berenson said St. Lawrence was a
tough, physical team and the Wolverines held up well.
As for Michigan's progress, "we're starting to play the way we need to
play," Berenson said.
Next Thursday Michigan travels to Lake Superior State. I will most likely
be making the drive over for that game. The then two teams travel down
state for a Saturday night battle at Joe Louis Arena.
