Quick update...
Nebraska-Omaha gave Michigan another scare, but three third period goals lifted the Wolverines to a trip to The Joe as they down the Mavs, 5-2.
More trapping and blocking shots by the UNO defense made it tough for the Wolverines to get quality shots again, but Jeff Tambellini opened the scoring in the first period when it one-timed a shot from the right faceoff dot past UNO goalie Chris Holt. Tambellini received a perfect cross-zone pass by Matt Hunwick for the setup.
The Mavs tied it up later in the period on the power play. Shortly after Mike Woodford whiffed on a shorthanded opportunity, UNO rushed down ice and tipped a centering pass past Al Montoya.
Then in the second period, UNO stole the puck behind the Michigan net and sent a perfect centering pass out front. The initial big blast was stopped by Montoya, but the rebound went right back to the shooter while Montoya was on the ground and he flipped it in to give UNO the lead.
But in the third period, Michigan finally got some life. Dwight Helminen scored six and a half minutes into the period to tie the game. Eric Werner then gave the Wolverines the lead. And Tambellini notched his second of the night to secure the victory. And Helminen added an empty netter just for good measure.
Other winners in the first round are Miami, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Northern Michigan, which upset Alaska Fairbanks with the sweep. And Notre Dame just defeated Western Michigan 2-1 in overtime to win their series.
That's all for now...
Go Blue!
