Jason Ryznar scored shorthanded with about a minute left in regulation to cap off a wild game and clinch Michigan a top-two seed in the CCHA tournament.
The Wolverines need a win or tie tomorrow night to take the No. 1 seed in the CCHA tournament after Miami defeated Ohio State in overtime tonight.
After a scoreless first period, Jeff Tambellini put U-M on the board early in the second. Michigan State's David Booth tied the game later on.
A wild finish to the second period then saw three goals scored in a 30 second span. Dwight Helminen and Andrew Ebbett scored back-to-back goals to make it 3-1, but Brock Radunske cut it to one goal seconds later.
In the third period, A.J. Thelen tied the game for the Spartans and Mike Lalonde put them ahead.
Mike Brown then made the freshman mistake of taking a penalty with under three minutes to play, but Ryznar was the shorthanded hero.
Michigan now has 38 points, one more than Miami. A win tomorrow will give U-M the CCHA regular season title outright. A tie tomorrow and Miami win will make them co-champs with Michigan taking the head-to-head tie breaker and No. 1 seed.
