Michigan 4, UAF 1

The Michigan hockey team scored three unanswered late third-period goals to
break away and down Alaska Fairbanks, 4-1. Two is the magic number as five
Wolverines had a double point night.

The Wolverines went on a five-minute power play with nine minutes left in
regulation after the Nanooks Curtis Fraser crashed hard into U-M goalie Al
Montoya and was given a major penalty. It was the third time of the night
UAF was given a penalty for running into the goalie, the second one called
on Curtis. He simply crushed Montoya, sending the U-M netminder crashing
back into the post and losing his helmet. Even the UAF announcers said,
"You just can't do that." And to show how much I love these UAF
announcers, late in the game another scrum occurred as Montoya got tangled
up with Ryan Campbell in the crease area and the color man said he didn't
blame Montoya because "I'd be pissed too."

The dirty play backfired as the Wolverines capitalized twice on the ensuing
power play to pull away. Eric Werner scored back-to-back goals 1:22 apart
to break the deadlock. He beat Preston McKay high on both goals. Milan
Gajic and Brandon Kaleniecki drew the assists on Werner's first goal with
7:39 remaining, and T.J. Hensick and Gajic assisted on the latter goal with
6:17 left.

Native Alaskan Jason Ryznar scored an empty net goal with 55 seconds
remaining to put the nail in the coffin. David Moss and Andrew Ebbett
assisted on the play.

It was Ryznar who also drew first blood in the game scoring midway through
the second period, also from Ebbett and Moss. And you know his mom was
proud of her son because she could audibly be heard screaming and cheering
over the radio.

Kelly Czuy scored the lone Nanook goal.

Montoya turned aside 36 shots to earn the game's #1 star. McKay stopped 30
shots for UAF.

The series wraps up tomorrow night.

Other CCHA scores:

Miami 5, Notre Dame 2
Northern Michigan 3, Western Michigan 2
Ferris State 5, Ohio State 2
Nebraska-Omaha 3, Bowling Green 3

That's all for now...

Go Blue!
