WOLVERINES BLANK BUCKEYES, 4-0
November 14, 2003
Sophomore goaltender Al Montoya stopped 30 shots for his second shutout of
the season as fifth-ranked Michigan blanks conference leader Ohio State,
4-0, at Value City Arena in Columbus. It's Montoya's second consecutive
shutout against the Buckeyes, and he has held them scoreless in his last
128 minutes.
"Obviously the difference in the game was Al Montoya," Berenson said. "He
was sharp and he made some huge saves in the game."
In three road games heading into tonight's contest, the Wolverines had
given up 15 goals, 14 of which came in two of those games. Tonight, no
problem.
Freshmen Mike Brown and T.J. Hensick and sophomore Dwight Helminen each had
a goal and assist for U-M. Junior defenseman Nick Martens added the other
goal.
More good news offensively as all four of the Wolverines goals came at even
strength. Coming into tonight nearly half of Michigan's goals scored this
season were on the power play (19 of 39 goals).
Brown notched the game-winner 8:18 into the first period when Helminen hit
him with a pass in the slot for a one-timer past OSU goalie Mike Betz.
Martens made it 2-0 late in the period when he beat Betz with a wrist shot
from the point that went through traffic in front of the net.
Helminen got out of his scoring slump 5:39 into the third period when he
stuffed home a rebound off Milan Gajic's shot. It's Helminen's first goal
since the regular season opener against Mercyhurst back on October 4.
"It was just a matter of our line," Helminen said. "We went out there
tonight and were checking. Really going back to the basics and that worked."
Hensick continued his scoring tear with a goal with 3:47 remaining. Mike
Woodford picked up the puck along the halfboards and both OSU defenders
came after him. Woodford found Hensick all alone in front, and T.J. deked
Betz and put away a backhander to secure the victory.
"We know that Ohio State will come back tomorrow night with their absolute
best game," Berenson said. "We're going to have to be ready for that."
The weekend series wraps up tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. ET.
