This week's Red Berenson Show is now partially available on Michigan Hockey
Net. The first half of the show is NOT there because my computer crashed
during the first commercial break. The show starts a minute or two in to
the David Harlock interview. Harlock talks about playing in the NHL, his
job as video coordinator for Michigan, and talking to the
freshmen. Berenson then comes back on to talk about next weekend's
showdown with Northern Michigan, parents weekend, and a few of the hockey
reunions at the games.
I'll briefly recap the first half of the show now...
He talked about the weekend series against Quinnipiac and how they were a
good team. He talked about the big weekends Brandon Kaleniecki and Jeff
Tambellini had scoring the majority of the goals. He emphasized the
importance of faceoffs in the games and how both of Michigan's game winners
were faceoff goals. He said they don't practice it as much as they should,
but they teach the players to try and mix it up...sometimes try to pull it
back, other times push it forward...to keep the other team guessing. He
said former Wolverine Tim Helbert, who was in the audience, was great at
faceoffs because he was able to act like he was going to pull the puck to
his right every time but ended up pushing the puck to his left winger who
was always open because of it. Berenson said they still haven't figured
out how he did it.
Berenson wasn't too happy about giving up four goals (Friday night) at a
home game, especially since the offense has been struggling to score. One
stat he doesn't like seeing is that Michigan has scored 18 goals but given
up 18 as well.
Injury report: Jason Ryznar's shoulder is doing much better and he is back
on the ice doing full workouts. He could be ready to go this
weekend. Dwight Helminen skated at practice today and he should be good to
go this weekend, too.
Berenson talked briefly about the students "C-YA!" chant right before the
commercial break. He said the language needs to go because it's
disrespectful. He doesn't like it, the hockey program doesn't like it, the
university doesn't like it, and many of the fans and visitors don't like
it. He said that students don't get to read all the letters he does. Some
of the letters even come from other students who are ashamed of the
profanity. Berenson said that he still likes comedian Bill Cosby, he finds
his comedy funny, and Cosby does it all without using profanity. He said
you can still be funny and have fun at hockey games without resorting to
the offensive material. For those interested, there is a thread on my
message board looking for alternative chants to the "C-YA!" profanity
string. http://michiganhockey.net/forums - Toss in your two cents!

That's all for now...
