U-M SALVAGES WEEKEND WITH
SPLIT By Jason Paul
October 12, 2003
The Michigan hockey team kicked off the CCHA regular season Friday
against Miami by getting spanked, 8-3, but rebounded Saturday with a
tough 2-1 victory.
In the opener, the Wolverines trailed 3-2 after two periods though were
said to have outplayed the RedHawks during that time. Then in the third
period, all hell broke loose.
Miami exploded with five goals in the first 10:22 of the third to jump
out to an 8-2 lead. Al Montoya had his worst outing as a Wolverine and
was pulled after the sixth goal. Jeff Tambellini added a late goal to cap
off the scoring.
The Wolverines special teams, which were hot last weekend, were missing
in action. The RedHawks were 4-of-5 on the power play, while U-M was a
discimal 1-for-10.
Freshmen T.J. Hensick and David Rohlfs scored for the Wolverines. Captain
Andy Burnes did not play due to an ankle injury.
Saturday night coach Red Berenson went to work changing one player on all
the lines and inserted Burnes into the lineup. The Wolverines got off to
a quick start and received great goaltending to hang on for a 2-1
win.
Charlie Henderson scored 2:19 into the opening stanza. "After the
game last night, we couldn't believe that we played so badly," he
said. "We all knew it was very important to get something started
early."
David Rohlfs netted his second goal in two nights with a great individual
effort to catch up to the puck and punch it past RedHawk goalie Steve
Hartley. "What a great effort," Berenson said.
Unfortunately, the goal also cost Rohlfs as he slid head first into the
endboard and reportedly suffered a concussion that kept him out the rest
of the game.
The Wolverines then turned to Montoya to carry them the rest of the way.
After his worst outing Friday night, Montoya came up with several huge
saves to keep U-M in the game. His shutout was broken with 7:51 left in
regulation when Derek Edwardson scored his fourth goal of the
weekend.
Montoya finished the contest with 33 saves and was named the No. 1 star
of the game.
"He came up with the kind of goalkeeping that you need on the road
when you're facing a team that is as good as Miami," Berenson said.
"I thought he was excellent."
Quite a turn-around from Friday night's affair, but the Wolverines
learned from their mistakes, made the necessary adjustments, and
according to Montoya, simply "wanted it more."
"Right off the bat, we never gave up," Montoya said. "Even
when we kept getting those penalties, we kept going right after them. We
knew the only way to give them life would be on the power play so we shut
that down, shut the team down."
Michigan returns home next Friday for a weekend series against
Quinnipiac. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m. both nights.
