WEEKEND PREVIEW
Now down to business...
The Wolverines open up the CCHA regular season tonight at Miami. Michigan
has a 14-game winning streak against the RedHawks, but the two teams have
fought some close games in recent years. Two of their past four contests
have gone to overtime, and three of them were decided by one goal. Coach
Red Berenson said Miami will be the most improved team in the CCHA this
season, so it'll be a good first road test for Michigan.
Last weekend Michigan defeated York in exhibition action, then downed
Mercyhurst 5-3 the following night. The Wolverines had a 5-1 lead before
giving up two third-period goals. While it may not seem like that big a
deal, last year it was their biggest weakness. Michigan outscored their
opponents in the first two periods by a 119-55 margin, but in the third
period they scored 47 goals while giving up 46. Simply put, they don't
need to start this trend again. Remember when they used to have a 100+
game unbeaten streak when they led heading into the third
period?
The RedHawks opened the season with a pair of losses in the Lefty
McFadden Invitational. They were downed 3-1 by St. Lawrence, despite
outshooting them by a wide margin, then beaten 5-3 by conference foe Ohio
State in the consolation game.
RYZNAR OUT
According to yesterday's Michigan Daily, junior forward Jason Ryznar
will not play in this weekend's games. Ryznar bruised his shoulder
against York. It's nothing new for Ryz as last season he dislocated one
shoulder in the season opener, missed three games, then injured his other
shoulder in his first game back and missed the next four games. He just
can't get a break.
RADIO TAPE-DELAY
Due to Michigan football tonight, the WTKA hockey broadcast will be
tape-delayed and aired Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by the live broadcast
at 7 p.m.
HENSICK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
With a goal and assist against Mercyhurst, freshman forward (and
future star) T.J. Hensick was named the CCHA's Rookie of the
Week.
MACVOY COMMITS FOR 2005
U.S. National Team Development Program Under-17 forward Zach MacVoy
has verbally committed to the Wolverines for fall 2005. The
Livonia, Mich., native is 6'1, 210-pounds and currently third on the team
in scoring with three goals and five assists in nine games.
MacVoy joins fellow Under-17 defenseman Jack Johnson and Canadian forward
Andrew Cogliano in the 2005 class.
COMRIE'S EDMONTON DAYS NUMBERED?
In an interview with the Edmonton Sun yesterday, former Wolverine
star Mike Comrie said of his chances of returning to Edmonton,
"We're still trying to get things figured out. Obviously, it's
a process that's taking some time. Unfortunately, it doesn't look
great, but, hopefully, we can get something settled."
Comrie's agent Rich Winter also echoed his statement. "There
are differences of opinion between the parties that may be
irreconcilable," he said.
Comrie has returned to Edmonton after being locked out of training camp
and spending a few weeks skating with the Wolverines in Ann
Arbor.
