NHL DRAFT
---------
The 2003 NHL Entry Draft takes place this weekend. The fun starts
Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN2. I believe the first
three rounds are the on Day 1 and the rest of the draft Sunday.
The Wolverines have a handful of players up for grabs. Jeff
Tambellini will be the first Wolverine taken, and he has been
receiving a lot of media attention the past few weeks. He was ranked
21st among North American skaters in the final Central Scouting
Bureau rankings. He is projected to go anywhere from mid-to-late-
first round to the second round.
Vancouver has openly expressed interest in him if he's still
available when they pick 23rd. Of course, Jeff's father Steve
Tambellini is the vice president of player personnel there. But
Steve recently said in an NHL.com article that if Jeff's still
available when it's their turn to pick that he will get up and leave
the draft table because he wants no part in the decision.
Other Wolverines available are Danny Richmond, and incoming recruits
Tim Cook, Matt Nickerson, and David Rohlfs. The first three were all
ranked as mid-draft talent, while Rohlfs was ranked 200th by the CSB,
which would put him very late in the draft if he gets selected.
Goalie Al Montoya did not opt-in for the draft...if he had, he would
have lost his NCAA eligibility.
I'll e-mail out draft day results this weekend.

the Big Ten Conference to honor student-athletes for sportsmanship

observing their sport's rules and intent. The individuals must be
fair and respectful to their opponent, and in addition, be
enthusiastic about the game, enjoy playing it, and win or lose, do
their absolute best at all times. The recipients shall also be active
on their campus communities.

BECKETT HOCKEY NAMES TURCO PLAYER OF THE YEAR
---------------------------
From DallasStars.com
JUNE 4, 2003 -- Goaltender Marty Turco, who registered the lowest
goals-against mark in the NHL's modern era in his first year as a
starter with the Dallas Stars, has been named the 2002-03 NHL Player
of the Year by Beckett Hockey.
Turco's goals-against average of 1.72 was the lowest since Dave
Kerr's 1.54 mark in 1939-40. Turco also topped the league with a
.932
save percentage, and his 31 wins helped lead the Stars to the top
spot in the Western Conference, just one season after the team missed
the playoffs.
"It's certainly an honor to be named the Beckett Player of
the Year,"
Turco said. "But the best part of the year wasn't the
numbers; it was
playing with my teammates, who are a great bunch of guys, and having
a legitimate chance of winning. It was a disappointment not to win
the Stanley Cup, but honors like this help you get over it."
Turco was also named to the NHL Second All-Star Team.
