2002 SUMMER HOCKEY SHOWCASE AND GOLF CLASSIC

University of Michigan alumni will trek their way back to campus Aug. 2-3
for what is now being called the 2002 Summer Hockey Showcase and Golf Classic.

The alumni hockey games will feature three contests. The 50-and-above game
will kick off the event Aug. 2 at 4:30 p.m., followed by the 35 to 50 years
old game at 5:30 p.m.

From 6-6:45 p.m. fans will have the opportunity to meet the players and
obtain autographs. I guess that means the 35-50 group is either going to be
playing the fastest game in hockey history, or else most of the fans will
be walking out on their game.

Then at 7 p.m. the main event kicks off. The game will feature everyone
from recent graduates to those 35 years old and under. Heck, last year Andy
Hilbert played in the game just a few days after he announced he was
leaving Michigan early for the pros.

Some of the names now released as participating are Red Berenson, Brendan
Morrison, Mike Knuble, Steve Shields, and Marty Turco.

If Al Loges is playing again, he's my early pick for star of the game.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the door or at Yost Ice Arena
between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. the week of the even. They are $5 for adults and
$2 for children between 7 and 12 years old. Children six and under are
free. All proceeds will benefit the Michigan Hockey Scholarship Endowment Fund.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, the alumni will trade their sticks for clubs for the
annual golf outing. That even will take place at the University of Michigan
Golf Course and will feature shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
