U-M TRIO SNAG ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
March 6, 2002
Three University of Michigan hockey players have been named to the
CCHA all-conference teams. Defenseman Mike Komisarek was the lone
Wolverine named to the All-CCHA First Team, while junior forwards
Mike Cammalleri and John Shouneyia were given second team honors.
Komisarek, the only sophomore named to the squad, joins Michigan
State defenseman John-Michael Liles, Ferris State forwards Rob
Collins and Chris Kunitz, Nebraska-Omaha forward Jeff Hoggan, and
Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller.
Komisarek captured ten of eleven possible first place votes, the most
of any player, and tied Miller for most points with 51. He is the
leading overall scorer among defensemen on the team with 10 goals and
16 assists, and the second leading in conference scoring with seven
goals and 14 assists. Komisarek led all defensemen with a +19
plus/minus rating in conference play.
Cammalleri and Shouneyia join Alaska Fairbanks forward Bobby Andrews,
Michigan State defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, and Nebraska-Omaha
defenseman Greg Zanon and goaltender Dan Ellis on the second team.
Despite missing 11 league games in the second half of the season,
Cammalleri earned All-CCHA honors for the second consecutive season
after posting 14 goals and 11 assists in 17 contests. A first-team
selection last year, Cammalleri, who garnered three first-team votes,
averaged a league-high 1.47 points per game and tied for fourth most
goals.
Shouneyia received All-CCHA honors for the first time in his career.
The junior forward centered U-M's second line the first half of the
season and the top line after Cammalleri went out in the second
half. He tallied seven goals and 26 assists to tie for third in the
league scoring race. He leads the Wolverines in scoring with 9 goals
and 33 assists and ranks as the CCHA's top-scoring junior in overall
games.
In addition to the trio, U-M senior goaltender Josh Blackburn was
given honorable mention recognition by finishing as one of the top
six remaining point-getters in the balloting. Junior captain Jed
Ortmeyer also received five voting points including one first-team
vote, but not enough for honorable mention status.
Members of the All-CCHA teams were selected by the 12 head coaches in
the CCHA based on play in conference games, and coaches were not
allowed to vote for players from their own team. The All-CCHA teams
will be honored at the 2002 CCHA Awards Banquet on Thursday, March
14, at the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit.
