FOX SPORTS TO TELEVISE FIRST ROUND GAME
Fox Sports Detroit will televise this Saturday's CCHA First-Round
Game 2 contest between Michigan and Lake Superior State. For those
attending the Saturday game, be advised that the starting time is
7:05 p.m., while Game 1 and Game 3 (if necessary) will start at 7:35
p.m.
TWO WOLVERINES NAMED TO BAUER/CCHA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Two players from Michigan are among seven freshmen from five schools
named to the Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team. U-M forward Eric Nystrom
and defenseman Eric Werner were selected to the squad by vote of
conference head coaches.
Nystrom scored 13 goals and added 8 assists to finish third among
freshmen in conference scoring. He was second in the conference with
four game-winning goals.
Werner recorded 15 points on 3 goals and 12 assists to finish tenth
among freshmen scoring. He led the Wolverines freshman class in
assist and played a big role on the U-M blueline this season.
The All-Rookie Team will be honored at the 2002 CCHA Awards to be
held Thursday, March 14, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
SHONEYIA NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
University of Michigan center John Shouneyia has been named the CCHA
Offensive Player of the Week. Shouneyia had a goal and three assists
in a weekend sweep of Western Michigan. It is the first time he has
won the award.
TURCO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Former University of Michigan standout and current Dallas Stars
goaltender Marty Turco has been named NHL Player of the Week for the
period of Feb. 25 through March 3. Turco improved the Stars to
seventh place in the Western Conference by posting a 3-0-0 record
during the week with a 1.26 goals-against average and .947 save
percentage.
Turco backstopped the Stars to a three-game winning streak, beginning
on Feb. 28 as he turned away 20 shots, in relief of starter Ed
Belfour, in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks. On
March 2, he made 21 saves in a 2-1 road win over the Colorado
Avalanche and stopped 17 shots as the Stars defeated the San Jose
Sharks 4-1 on March 3.
