TWO WOLVERINES NAMED TO BAUER/CCHA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Two players from Michigan are among seven freshmen from five schools named to the Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team. U-M forward Eric Nystrom and defenseman Eric Werner were selected to the squad by vote of conference head coaches.
Nystrom scored 13 goals and added 8 assists to finish third among freshmen in conference scoring. He was second in the conference with four game-winning goals.
Werner recorded 15 points on 3 goals and 12 assists to finish tenth among freshmen scoring. He led the Wolverines freshman class in assist and played a big role on the U-M blueline this season.
The All-Rookie Team will be honored at the 2002 CCHA Awards to be held Thursday, March 14, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
SHONEYIA NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
University of Michigan center John Shouneyia has been named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Shouneyia had a goal and three assists in a weekend sweep of Western Michigan. It is the first time he has won the award.
TURCO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Former University of Michigan standout and current Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco has been named NHL Player of the Week for the period of Feb. 25 through March 3. Turco improved the Stars to seventh place in the Western Conference by posting a 3-0-0 record during the week with a 1.26 goals-against average and .947 save percentage.
Turco backstopped the Stars to a three-game winning streak, beginning on Feb. 28 as he turned away 20 shots, in relief of starter Ed Belfour, in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks. On March 2, he made 21 saves in a 2-1 road win over the Colorado Avalanche and stopped 17 shots as the Stars defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-1 on March 3.
